Couple of critiques: 1) The tree has already leafed out, so it's the worst time to be transplanting woody perennials. We're so close to summer with its heat and drought. No matter how much you water, it WILL suffer more because of this than any blight will. Expect more die-back than growth if it's going to be anything like last year :S 2) You're 'backfilling' with topsoil (which I assume is of mineral origin) amended with organic matter AND you're even layering with manure in between. This will, down the road, create the same problem you're trying to rectify now: the organic matter will decompose/oxydize and the medium (and possibly the tree with it) will sink, exposing roots, creating a bowl and posssibly leaving the birch once again lower than the (original?) soil line. DON'T add organic matter to a planting hole and backfill when planting shrubs or trees! 3) Fertillizers aren't necessary at this stage (or future for that matter), unless your soil is really deficient. Mulching on top is more than enough to supply the demand. Water is what it needs the most now. That it 'contains mycorrhizal fungi' is irrelevant. These are already present in your in your soil, so adding more isn't necessary; just a waste of money IMHO. 4) Kuddos on the mulching.

I appreciate the info you gave me. I’m going to keep an eye on it and if there seems to be issues then I will definitely address it, but I’m hoping as a whole the tree will be happier than before!
