Great update on the remarkable progress in restoring this canal which as you say, runs through some stunning countryside. Newport Council and volunteers are doing an excellent job. Thank you.

An interesting video this day. The act of dragging all the vegetation from the canal basin, is a very important act. Keep the water flow, and limit the flooding possibilities. Thank you for this day’s video. Always informative and interesting. See you on the next Steve. 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸

If they spent more time maintaining the rivers and canals the extra capacity would do wonders to the current flooding issues of much of the UK. Thanks again for watching
Brilliant amount of work gone on here Steve, thanks for the update. Loving being able to see more of the structures true forms at last.

No worries, there’s a few groups dotted up the canal, there’s a group called bridge 46 to five locks which seem to get a lot done, I’m going to cover it in the next few weeks

The side ponds, are needed because the small anti chamber between locks would probably not have the water capacity to fill or take from the locks so it needed the side pound to create a false - larger pound between each lock
@CourtAboveTheCut11 ай бұрын
Is that the reason for the small section between locks? Just to feed that water back in? Rather than being a staircase. I know the reason for the pounds and keeping that water in but I couldn’t figure out why they wouldn’t build them as staircase locks instead
@jonathanellis184211 ай бұрын
@@CourtAboveTheCut no idea why, I agree with you, I can’t work out the reason for this and not just build a stair case locks such as was done at Grindley Brook on the Llangollen canal

Great update, I am heading down there in the summer for a video so will keep you updated. BTW the Crumlin arm was used to ship iron from Newport docks to Crumlin to build the viaduct.
@CourtAboveTheCut11 ай бұрын
I've seen pictures of that, It looks well cool, it's a shame it's no more! It may add an interesting side to the video when I do up that way though. I was told there was a mine disaster further up as well?
@bobsrailrelics11 ай бұрын
@@CourtAboveTheCutThere were a number of mine disasters around that area. The biggest was Sengynedd but that was in a different valley. I'll have a dig and message you.

@@bobsrailrelics I think I found the memorial on google maps, I can’t remember the name though, I’ll have a look as well

@CourtAboveTheCut I think the disaster you are talking about was the Prince of Wales colliery in Abercarn where the water from the canal was used to flood the burning mine, I believe that was the case.

It will be fun to test your theory about empty and laden boats using opposite sides of the lock when it is returned to service.
@zz78911 ай бұрын
I don't know whether the 'shelves' are wide enough to take a boat.
@CourtAboveTheCut11 ай бұрын
@@zz789they are easily, they are as wide if not wider than the middle of the lock.

Was the canal/river that the canal was originally part of, diverted when they closed that length of canal? How will they refill that branch?
@CourtAboveTheCut10 ай бұрын
Which river are you referring to? The Usk is the river in Newport but the canal dropped into a dock which was then connected to the Usk and Severn. The main canal wasn’t a river navigation, there’s always parts on canals that have a river/stream drop in and out of them so small sections are technically classed as rivers but I’m not sure on sections on the Mon and Brec

Is it easier to clear our reeds from a watered canal or a dry bed? Do you have a webllink which explains the standardized lock gates and the retrofitting into original locks?
@CourtAboveTheCut11 ай бұрын
I’d say so as you can cut them whilst pulling out of water the roots are really long and tangle up. No I don’t I’ll have a dig later and see what I can find

It’s debated why it’s built the way it is, this is actually my second video on the area my first video talks more about it. I’ll pop a link below
It would have helped at the beginning of the video if you had explained where you are, i.e. Newport, south Wales, to avoid confusion with Newport in Shropshire.
