I went through this last year, and I had no idea what to do. My shelter's protocol was euthanasia... so I claimed the kittens, basically adopted, all 7 of them so I could treat them. My team (my roommates and friends) and I did our very best, and we got 5 out of 7 through it. The boys we lost... we all miss them so much, they would have been great pets. It was a lot of crying and sleepless nights as we syringe fed them all, gave fluids and meds etc. Going through this changed my shelter's policy and they are working on implementing treatment for panleuk kittens now. I still have two of the kids one year later and they are absolutely beautiful and lovely cats.

Retired critical care nurse here. Getting ready to use my skills for infant kittens from rescues in my community. Currently prepping my spare bedroom into a ICU with all the equipment and I am able to isolate this way. Ripping up carpet and getting rid of soft nonwashable surfaces. Been reading your book for instruction. Your explanation here was very good, very detailed, yet easy to understand. And will be spending some time at an animal hospital to learn the skills of sq fluids and tube feeding. I’m great with people so using those skills and moving forward with fostering. I fostered dogs for years but had my back broken last year by two rambunctious pups. Still having treatment and will behaving what I hope is my last surgery soon. So perfect time to shift to easier animals physically. I love your glo germ demo! I used to do this to new nurses to show how poorly most people wash their hands. I’ll e doing scrubs and keep a supply of disposable isolation gowns and equipment. I already have disinfection protocols from years of bringing home patient germs. I disinfected my phone daily, after every shift. And I even have a full bathroom I can dedicate to my future foster babies. Turning it into one phase of quarantine. And I did infectious disease nursing my last ten years. I wanted away to keep using my skills. I love your explanation of isolation. I would also make a suggestion if they don’t have disposable booties. Keep a large bin that they can step into easily. Put your disinfection solution in the bin, about 1inch. Step in with footwear on. Using the solution and cloth, wipe down your shoes, then step onto disposable pad to blot off shoes.

Yay for your shelter having a unicorn foster joining their brigade! You will be such an asset for them. I used to foster and my unicorn status was that I had no other pets, so I could take medical recovery cases or FIV+ cats with no risk to them from my existing environment. Plus I worked from home so I was able to monitor/feed/medicate when needed. Almost all my shelter's fosters had at least a few animals of their own. Thanks so very much for all your hard work prepping to be a crucial link in the rescue chain for the animals that will come into your care! 🎉❤

I was doing a early childhood practicum in a community setting. The actual on staff teachers made so much fun of me for practicing good bio security when it came to diaper changes. I insisted on washing my hands in between kids and wearing fresh gloves each time. They treated me like a little hypochondriac. Guess who was the only one between 10 children and 3 adults that did not get hand foot mouth? I needed no better object lesson in why hygiene practices matter.

Like all of Hannah’s advice, this is good practice even if your not fostering. If you are a multiple cat home and one gets sick, you want to protect everyone. Plus, just like when humans have a cold or flu (or Covid!) clean sheets, towels, etc help prevent reinfection. So grateful for the suggestion on disinfectant, I’m not a fan of most on the market. Additionally, the tip about contact time. Wonder how many times I’ve wiped or washed an area in the kitchen and immediately rinsed and dried it. Practically every time! Thank you Hannah!

The only reason why I'm so good at quarantine and sanitization is because I am extremely allergic to poison ivy- which spreads through oil contact and I lived out in the country as a kid; if I wasn't good at retracing and cleaning I would have been in the hospital all the time. It might have caused rather detrimental OCD as an adult- but it has it's benefits sometimes.

Thank you for showing this! I fostered four kittens through ringworm and it was so stressful that I stopped fostering. But they all survived and my other cats didn’t get it. But it was so scary. I think the separate kitten room is key. And throw away litter boxes. Using card board boxes and bags for play is great- our grown cats love them. Every time we come home from Sam’s they practically fight over who gets in the new box. I think you could make your own disposable litter boxes for kittens pretty easily too unsteady if buying them. What kind of litter do you use?

We gave ours KMR. It was easiest to get into them, and it stayed in better than solids. We fed them smaller amounts every 3 hours or so. Subcutaneous fluids were also essential, and of course quarantine/cleaning. It was hell for about 2 weeks, but out of the 7 foster kittens we had, 6 survived, one of which never even got sick. I think there was some luck involved, because we really didn't know what we were doing, but did have some knowledge about viruses in general and based our actions on that.

If it does not smell chlorine like, it is not bleach!). Usually very cheap and is does disinfect surfaces and even help remove feces. I volunteer for a very large cat/kitten rescue. They purchased the tiny 2 bedroom house that was on the lot next door and turned it into a building just for panleuk, with a trained, dedicated team who work in shifts following a strict medical protocol. Any cat or kitten who is found sick on intake is tested and immediately transferred to this facility as well as any exposed animal. If any foster kitten comes down with panleuk, the animal and its littermates are transferred.I sometimes take a shift and it is very demanding and exhaustive. However, our success rate is very high and that is the rewarding part. As a foster, I follow these sanitizing steps between every litter. I also soak all linens in Rescue. My hallway is carpeted, so that gets sprayed with Rescue, let contact and then use carpet cleaner. Rescue can be used in carpet cleaners, but I am never comfortable with how evenly it is distributed, so I spray, leave to contact, and rinse up.

For anyone in Australia, who can't easily access Rescue disinfectant, the best alternative is F10 Vet disinfectant. I drown my kitty zones in it (obviously not the kitties), and I also use the F10 fogger, which comes in a fogging spray can to get to any tiny places, like under cabinets, just in case. I mostly foster ringworm kittens, (over 500 so far) but we are currently going through a Panluek outbreak so I am overly cautious and really appreciate this video from the Kitten Lady.

Change clothes and shoes/slippers when coming out of it, wash hands every time I've handled something in the room and need to touch something not "contaminated" (e.g. kitten food outside the room or a bottle of water or my face). Because that can mean a lot of handwashing, I wear gloves and wash over the gloves simply because my skin gets too dry otherwise. As a minimum I would do this until the kittens have had 2 deworming doses (14 days apart) and I'm reasonably confident they don't have something nasty that's extremely contagious e.g. giardia, FIP, FCP or FeLV.

I had one that didn’t show the traditional signs (only losing weight) and when he got snapped he tested positive so how would i know if he was already shedding (and therefore i was spreading the virus all over the house?) They were quarantined but I was touching them without gloves and wasn’t gowned up and was putting things down outside the pen because everyone was healthy)

I think the way a lot of people do it is by taking reasonable precautions while the kitties are in quarantine, because at the end of the day, all the kitties may come out of quarantine fine! I'm pretty sure I've seen Hannah in disposable shoe scrubs and proper hand washing while the cats are quarantined. Just generally, if you want to fully gown up for the full time, sure! There's nothing wrong with that! But just generally, if you're washing your hands, using separate shoes for the kitty area and wearing gloves and properly washing your hands, that's reasonable (think about how in hospitals, triage nurses don't wear full biohazard suits all of the time because they may come in contact with ebola, they're maintaining their hygiene and probably immediately changing out of their scrubs when they get home/before they leave so they don't spread anything that way.) But also remember you can ask you local vet/shelter what they do for animals' quarantine periods and I'm sure they would happily share some tips and tricks. Good luck and good job caring for those kitties! BTW: this has been about quarantine BEFORE you know if they have panleuk

I would love more advice on carpeted areas, my rental home unfortunately has carpet and my last litter had panleuk so I'm struggling to figure out the best way to disinfect the space
@emilythechef2 ай бұрын
I don't think you can truly disinfect carpet. :/ If you feel like you've got all supplies and the rest of your apartment surfaces disinfected, maybe you can get a piece of sheet vinyl to lay over the carpet, and some of those panels/enclosures that Hanna has, and keep kittens in there. Wear shoe covers or special shoes before you step into that space.

Through poop and everything that exits the kitten. Sometimes even just close proximity. Vaccinations are available tho

What is that amazing enclosure you are using in your foster room? I'm done with the cheap snap or wire based systems.

HELP I have a orphan premature kitten. It was born Sunday November 3rd 2024. I've been doing everything that you do. I have the same kind of bottles as you PetAg 2oz but the nipple is different. What kind of nipple do you use and where did you get it. I've been having trouble with the nipple that came with the bottles. The kitten was 57 grams and very cold when it was rescued. The kitten is now 85 grams. I keep it's sleeping area between 85 to 90 degrees. It is in box right beside the head of my bed. 1st day I was feeding every hour, now I'm feeding every 2 hours. I have a syringe with nipple ordered, supposed to be delivered tomorrow but I really would like to get the same nipple that you use with your PetAg bottle, I believe it would be easier and more convenient for me and the kitten. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I found a kitten under a car and took it home. I have already a cat so i put her in a kitty pen in my office (ive fostered before so i was lucky to have the pen) I've been following your instructions the best i can but then the vet told me I have to quarantine the kitten two months, instead of two weeks. I dont know how Im going to do it, i feel bad leaving the kitten alone in a room for so long
@annlidslot82122 ай бұрын
Hi, I have no answer for your situation unfortunately. Have the vet explained why you need to do this. If not maybe you can talk to a different vet, or your shelter, if there is one, to get advice on how to take the best care you can of the little one. Luck! Yours, Ann

How can I clean toys or anything that’s got fabric that cannot be thrown into a washer? Can I dilute bleach 1:32 spray it on it and leave it and then be okay around it once it dries? Mine are getting over it and I need to clean their environment (I’m not a fosterer, I just found kittens and brought them in , didn’t quarantine so they’ve been EVERYWHERE)
@carolinex23902 ай бұрын
No I don't think you can leave bleach on surfaces.. not safe. I believe you need to only use things that can be thrown in the washer or surface wiped
@JohnnyByeYmАй бұрын
Well you can put dilute bleach on fabric. The problem is just that anything that is not plain white will get massively discoloured and anything that is not relatively sturdy may even get brittle and / or eaten away. Remember you need to soak this type of surface completely and for a prolonged time. The type of fabric that withstands bleaching is likely the type you can also wash 90°C. That being said you might use blankets that are 90°C washable in such a case for reuse. Just do nit forget to wash it truly at that temperature. It may be questinalble if that effort is worth it. In doubt discard.

What about putting things in the freezer for 2-3 days? We just had panleukopenia a month ago... we lost 7 of our 11 kittens... Do you use a fogger with a cleaning product as well?

hi! this doesn't relate to the video, but would you have to check up on the kittens and mother every 2 hours, or no since there is a mother?
@jjbee112 ай бұрын
You should still be checking up on a mom and kittens multiple times a day, and weighing the kittens to make sure mom is producing enough milk

After you have "tossed" the items you cannot properly disinfect. Where do you get the bins too, to empty those. As those bins now contain potentially this virus?
