That was true about Sergeant York too. His real actions were so incredible and out there that filming them would have looked absurd. They did the opposite with Audie Murphy. The film is accurate but a lot of people accuse it of being overblown and impossible.

Yes my friend he died 100 times. I know cause I've died 100 times for all the same reasons. So much of me is dead, my body just doesn't know to stop functioning. Yes, all soldiers who have seen what we have seen and do the things we did, everyone of these men die alittle more with each nightmare.

The Japanese sniper was one bit that was changed to be more believable than the true story. The sniper survived the war and testified that he had Doss in his sights 3 different times but his gun jammed all 3 times. This was too unbelievable even for a movie about a true story so it was changed to the sniper scene we have here at 1:30.

For his actions in single-handedly defending the legation in the face of impossible odds, Private Daly received the Congressional Medal of Honor. BTW: he ran out of ammo and went hand to hand toward end of the fight..with knife, rifle butt, etc Another example: In 1917 the United States once again needed the help of Sergeant Daly. Around this time France and Germany were in the middle of the biggest and deadliest war the planet had ever seen, and the U.S. decided to send in the Marines to help kick some ass in "The Great War", as it was now being called. Well Daly sure as shit wasn't going to miss out on an opportunity to fight in a World War, so he shipped out at age 44. He fought in several campaigns with the American Expeditionary Force in France, and won combat medals three more times - once when he crawled out under heavy enemy fire and rescued a half-dozen wounded Marines who were pinned down, once when he single-handedly captured 13 German soldiers, and once when he took out a heavily-fortified German machine gun nest all by himself using nothing more than a handful of grenades and a Colt .45 Automatic. He was also wounded three times, but yeah right like that could slow him down. Daly's greatest moment in World War I came during the intense fighting at the Battle of Belleau Wood. Daly's Marines were in the middle of a shitstorm. They were outnumbered two-to-one, outgunned, and facing down the barrel of a veritable load of German machine gun nests. They had been pinned down for hours by a non-stop hail of artillery and gunfire, and things were looking bleak as hell for our boys. Well all of a sudden, just as things were looking hopeless, a lone figure jumped up onto the earthworks the American Marines had been using for cover. Nobody in the comments seems to be talking about this, but at 2:32, is the first moment in the film that Doss actually holds a gun. But for me, at that moment, Desmond was not holding a gun, because he didn’t use it as one. He gave that metal tube with wooden parts a new purpose, a new meaning as a way of saving a life, not take one… and he did. He proved that in this broken world, one could still use something designed purely to destroy, to do the exact opposite. He used an object of killing to save, and I think thats fucking beautiful

my father was there. described the sheer hill with rope ladder. said during the fighting the smoke was thick and that enemy soldiers would pop up from caves among the US troops and blow themselves up. this movie depicts what he described.

Amazing true story. He stayed behind , when the entire battalion left. When he tried to save Smitty , played by actor : Luke Bracey. He found out that Smitty had died. He then prays to God. He tells God," God I can't hear you ". Then a fallen soldier is yelling and begging for help. Artillery shells are still falling down . As there are still American soldiers laying down wounded but still alive. Japanese soldiers are on foot patrols looking for American soldiers wounded . So they could bayonet them and kill them. Yet, amazingly Desmond Doss takes cover and safely waits for opportunity to rescue the ones he could save. How many Americans do we have now days would do this ? He saved over 75 American wounded soldiers . Its believed he actually saved 100 . Amazing story of courage and love for man kind and a true love for God. Action speaks louder then words. Also he saved his captain that was trying to kick him out of the Army. When he pushed a hand grenade away from the captain and kicked the other hand grenade with his foot. He even rescued his Sargent that was hazing him back in boot camp. To pull a blanket with all the weight of a sargent that weighed more then his self. God gave him the courage and the strength . Amazing movie and true story. They should teach this in all high schools. Loyalty , love , courage. Plus : Love for God's Holy Bible. Amen.

In real life he had to low crawl rescue a lot of those soldiers, if you haven't done a proper low crawl, you have no idea how tiring that is, let alone with a wounded soldier on your back and he did miles worth of that. He collapsed of pure exhaustion after he got the last soldier.

This reminds me of Piper millen, who, at the order of his CO, played the pipes on Sword Beach during D day. He told his CO, Lord lovat, that playing the pipes was against regulations, and Lovat replied. Ah, but that's the English War Office. You and I are both Scottish, and that doesn't apply" They advanced to pegasus bridge under the Piper. Snipers could have taken him out but, according to sources, didn't. Actually in real life Desmond's actions was more insane that they actually TONED it down to make it more believable.

It's hard to comprehend but the movie actually toned down his heroics because they were on such a scale that the movie audience would not have believed them..
