Bilt Hamber do a great rust removal product called Deox Gel. Brush it on to rust, leave it overnight and the next day rinse it off, nice shiny metal! Great for hard to reach bits and saves a lot of wire brushing!
@twentythree_
@twentythree_ Жыл бұрын
Good effort here Matt. Bilt Hamber products are great but having used both Dynax UB and UC on plenty of projects you really need to make sure all loose flakey rust is removed by knotted wire wheel, abrasive disc or blasting before application. These products are effective at treating/slowing surface corrosion, but deeper pitting such as that visible on the rear suspension beam and arms, drum backing plates, springs, brackets etc indicates deeper ingress of moisture and delamination of the steel which can't be stopped using a surface treatment. In the longer term, the only way to properly address the body rot is by cleaning back to clean steel, etch priming, stone chipping, painting and then applying protective wax. Keep up the good fight!

This Punto reminds me of my childhood- in my family we had two of them, a 3 door 75 ELX but with the same color as yours and an absolutely base spec 55 5 door and they were lovely little things. The 75 is long gone but the 55 is still around to this day (gave it to a friend) and it still marches on! I adore that yours is getting some well deserved love! Cheers!

Good job. To stop your ramps moving, cut a couple of peices of shhet steel the width of the ramp and bend one end so it hooks over the first step on the ramp. Then the car holds the ramp in place while you drive up on to it.

Just get on with it. The human body can take strength from any activity. It's actually amazing! We regenerate every day. This is a great video because... as someone who has done this procedure with various products over the years (now I stick with dynax UB or UC) filming is the last thing I want to be doing, but it has to be done, mucky tripod and camera lense the lot. Great video and the Punto looks amazing, just goes to show how good a decent day of work underneath makes all the difference :)

To drive up ramps like that cut a couple of long strips of carpet the width of the rungs, fold in half and wrap around the bottom rung then lay it out towards the car. They can't slip until the car is past the first rung and by then the weight of the car should hold it. Also if it has kick plates in the door openings, remove them and drill a hole into the sill so you can get the rustproofing extension in. Don't bother plugging the holes, they're covered by the kick plates and will allow a little air flow which is good.

Products made by Bilt Hamber Laboratories are hard to beat in terms of rust-treatment. After thorough preparation, I sprayed the Dynax UB on the rear beam, suspension coil pans and anywhere I was finding surface rust, on the 15-year-old underside of the family Polo. But that was during our first lockdown, over three years ago. Due to washing weekly, driving economically, and keeping on top of the maintenance, the Polo is still very black and clean underneath.

3:37 only crap because you haven't put two lengths of rope on them which you then put under the other set of wheels and when driving/ reversing will pull the ramps into the wheels being driven up. Been using this method for years and it saves tons of grief trying drive up shifting ramps.

Just got my Volvo 740 to do next… Keep up the good work though, can’t wait to see more on your Crown Vic (maybe that’s a good candidate for more Dynax wax in the future!).

What I have done to stop my ramps moving is to tie some rope around the bottom rung, put the ramp against the (rear) wheel with the rope on the outside and then stretch the rope to the inside of the (front) wheel, then as soon as you move the (front) wheel will be on top of the rope, preventing the ramp from moving as the (rear) wheels start to climb it.

When I was in the motor trade we used to compare Italian cars to dehydrated food, in those days Vesta curries, Surprise peas etc, these days think pot noodles. We used to say Italian cars are made from dehydrated body rot - just add water for instant rust! Trying to keep rust at bay was virtually impossible, even when they were only a couple of years old. We decided the best place to take them for treatment was the scrap yard, then go and buy something non-Italian and half decent.

One comment I have to make is whatever method of rustprofing (other than a full zinc dip of a bare shell) one still needs to come back every year and inspect and touch up a few areas before the rust takes hold again. In the case of a Punto that probably should have been done every year from new...

Wow, that's a huge effort. I am lazy, I give all the rust a quick spray with something like Comma Release oil or even WD40 then with some thick gloves I smear a pot or two of Copperslip over everything that's rusty. Then inspect and repeat on areas where the rust has fallen off a few months later. After the first year, only yearly inspections and touch-ups are required. Mud traps can be treated with engine oil as dried mud and oil make a good rest preventive, I treat inside sills and box sections with wax if they look perfect inside otherwise they get oil on a semi-regular basis.
