There's an even easier method: Label a piece of regular paper with the name of your variety, place your seeds with their little gel drops on the paper (I use tweezers), let them dry for two hours and they'll stick to it. When you want to sow the seeds, just scrape them off the paper. While the fresh gel usually inhibits germination (I've had some store-bought tomatoes with germinating seeds inside), the dried gel doesn't pose any problems. The gel layer might even keep the seeds fresh for longer, but I haven't tested this out.

I've always done the soaking method. This is interesting. Thanks for sharing!

I have had a lot of success from fermenting the seeds. For tomatoes and cucumbers. But I have left 1 or 2 of them for too long and has seeds sprout. It really is a timing thing.

MAM546 cool, on average how long does it take to get dried seeds?
@mikhovma5 жыл бұрын
@@FarmerGeorge they are usually dry to the touch by the next day but I keep my seeds drying in normal house conditions for a few weeks or months so they can dry completely. I have read that fermenting gives you the best viability (since unviable seeds float and get discarded) and storage life. This is my process... I ferment the pulp in water for 3 to 4 days ... no longer or they sprout... i scoop off the top scum, add more water and swirl the remaining debris and seeds, let the seeds settle on the bottom for a few seconds and drain off the top liquid. Keep doing that until it's mainly seeds on the bottom. then rinse the seeds in a fine collinder and place on a regular plate or something similar to dry. As long as you spread them out they can be dry to the touch by the next day... I keep my seeds drying in normal house conditions for a few weeks or months so they can dry completely.

Wran Ther nice! Isn’t saving seeds a pain in the butt?
@wranther5 жыл бұрын
@@FarmerGeorge Tomatoes sure can be a rather gooie stickie task for sure George. Yet Reapers and Scorpions and so on could be a real pain if not paying attention to gloves too. Sad to say but the growing season may be closing too soon. Down to 45 degrees at the moment, may drop a couple more degrees before sunup. -Bob...

Wran Ther yeah, I hear ya. Hot peppers are a pain too because of the whole literal pain in the butt haha, I guess my favorite to save seeds from are mild peppers

Words of advice: the quality of your audio suffers because of how your voice volume drops off within a few words of when you start speaking. You go from clear to mumbles. Practice speaking facing a mirror, concentrate on keeping your volume consistent and for gosh sakes, why have music in the background on the portion where you get into the items used and methodology of saving seeds...your voice is soooo quiet like you are whispering instead of speaking with that ..yes crappy...background music it's very hard to understand what is being explained.

Yep, making these videos is certainly an iterative process. I’m constantly learning and trying to improve their quality. Appreciate the professional advice!
