As i mentioned - the advantage of rebuilding a 2nd hand engine gives you a lot of extra parts on the rebuild -- plus you may have some that can be sold at the end. Looks like a lot of work and a lot of cleaning .

Brilliant Dean! How many of us have had an R8 sat next to us at the lights and wondered about the engine powering it? What a beast of a thing it is, again you make it look easy when we all know it would be mind blowing without the training and knowledge. Keep going...

You chose the best option getting a 2nd hand engine and rebuilding it. I bought a 2014 Focus ST from Copart with a hole in the crank case. Same story as your RS4, bought a 2nd hand engine, just fitted it and the replacement had a big end bearing knock. I've just finished rebuilding the engine and got the car in for MOT today. Wish I just bit the bullet and rebuilt the engine when I first bought it. oh yeah, and get yourself a cheap welder. much easier welding a nut on to those rounded bolts than making a mess with a chisel.
@jmqwert

Great update, and rebuiliding the second hand engine on this stage seems like the best choise! 👌Further down the road, when selling the car, nothing is coming back chasing you.. Anyway.... Wall mounted storage Shelfers/system, mounted tables well lighted, clean shop floor, engine stand, lifting table on wheels for ergonomics, parts washer etc etc..... A day worth of effort cleaning, making time/quality spend/delivered a hell of a lot better.. Just look at M539 restaurations. Keeping fokus on all "details" is on the longer stretch going to pay of big time in all areas incl the delivered quality of the finished builds.. But perhaps this place is just a small step in the pogress of getting a real workshop further down the line?

Not sure if you've tried this, but an old trick to loosening bolts that are difficult, is to try to tighten them first, it sometimes helps. (old trick i learnt during my apprenticeship years ago)
@markwalton8644

I learnt that trick in my apprenticeship as well! Also hitting the end of the bolt with a Hammerton shock the bolt also helps! Penetrative fluid is your friend 🤪

Great stuff!! Remember when we did the first prototypes of the chain drive engine (the original V8 was belt drive) at Cosworth (who were owned by Audi at the time). Great fun engine to develop and saved a chunk of packaging space by making the whole timing drive more compact. Great to see it all being rebuilt well.
@adampyro834
@adampyro834 Жыл бұрын
nice, i was surprised at how complex the timing is. never worked on one so i didnt have any knowledge of it. love that you mention our comments, i was one of those who said to do this option. i do think it makes a good vid too since if you had gone for a new engine it wouldnt have been torn down/inspected.

If it was me, I would judge the condition of motor by removing valve covers and oil pan also camera scope cyl bores. Engine appears to be in great shape looking at cylinder bores and clean internals. I’m 99.9% certain this engine does not need rebuild. Great video nonetheless, good luck w rebuild Dean!

Great video Dean I’m pleased yo are back. If you had a welder you could have welded a bolt on to the rounded off bolts and use a socket to undo the bolt which in turn should remove the rounded off bolt. On the flywheel, the last few will always get more difficult as you've already removed most of the bolts. If you replace the removed bolts with new ones torqued down to the right spec, you'll find the remaining stuck and stripped ones are easier to remove. And yes I realise they're a horrible wierd M7 thread or something.

Would be interesting if you could find the history on that engine, looks like a back street performance shop job, big turbos blowing the heads then a patch up n it did it again so they pulled the engine. Copper crap on the gasket looks like the "sealing" spray you can slop on before fitting, not sure I would go off book on something so expensive!

We got a great insight into the architecture of this engine when you did the RS4 rebuild. I find it hard to comprehend how the mighty VW-Audi Group can design these highly stressed V8 engines with so many obvious design flaws! They certainly don’t seem capable of high mileages without major maintenance on some of the major internals. I presume that this engine is also used for the Porsche Cayenne, I wonder if the same issues prevail with that engine? That complex timing chain arrangement looks frightening to me! Great content Dean, can’t wait for the next instalment 👍😎
@Welwynnick
@Welwynnick Жыл бұрын
What design issues? It's more complicated than it needs to be, but it's a robust and reliable engine. It wasn't used on any Porsches, only the RS4, RS5 & R8 with a few mods between. Detuned versions were used on all contemporary V8 Audis & VWs. Nick

Good luck with the engine, I think you are very brave even trying, those engines are a nightmare and from this video it looks like this one was an oil burner, the carbon and oil in the combustion chambers is quite bad. I would say that this engine has sat outside for a while and started corroding and that's why the bolts were so tight. TBH, if you could have got a bit of a discount on the brand new engine, it might have been a worthwhile investment, the engine you have is going to need thousands spent on it in parts and machining to make it like new.
