How to tell us you’re making stuff up, without telling us you’re making stuff up - say put egg shells in the garden and they’ll break down. Egg shells will not break down. I’ve put egg shells in my compost pile and found them intact a year later. If you put them in the blender, and turn them into dust, they’ll break down, but not by leaving them whole.
@beareroflifeАй бұрын
They have always broken down just slower. Maybe you're buying plastic eggs
@bigrich6750Ай бұрын
@@beareroflife Haha! Not that old yet. Anyone with any gardening experience, will tell you that whole egg shells don’t break down for quite a long time. Certainly not quickly enough to be of benefit within a year or two of putting them in your garden. There are plenty of KZbin videos about crushing them and turning into a great calcium supplement by using vinegar. As I said, I’ve even found them in my compost pile after a year, and had to crush them by hand, and still found pieces in my garden, and my soil is naturally acidic, and I use acidic materials like oak leaves in my compost. If they break down for you, great, but that’s not the case for anyone I’ve ever heard. Bake them in the oven, then put them in a blender, and you’ve got a soil supplement that will be available to your plants quickly.

@@bigrich6750 u r right , i even crushed my eggshells into smaller pieces and yet after four years when i digged down they were smiling at me sarcastly 😀😀😀still intact ...the best way to get calcium from eggshells is making a VINEGAR plus EGGSHELL mixture ,,, takes just 3 days !
@bigrich6750Ай бұрын
@@HomeGardening212 So true! I haven’t tried the vinegar solution but I’ve heard it works great, especially on things that need high calcium, like tomatoes. I’ve got enough egg shells that I’ve put through the blender, so I’ll make some this coming spring for my tomatoes and peppers.
@HomeGardening212Ай бұрын
@@bigrich6750 it works grealy , i used this year and not even a single blossom end rot happened on tomatoes , its sasy crush eggshells with hands (not powdered or ground eggshells) Make sure the inner memberane of eggshell is not there anymore , remove by hands or just slightly fry it on the pan untill the membrane is gone add vinegar ten times more than the eggshells cover the mixture with a cloth , don't airtight reaction begins immidiately and carbon di oxide is relased along with water vapors let the mixture sit until all the crushed eggshells float on top of ths mixture (3 days top ) Add one teaspoon with gallon of water and spray on the sides of the plant near roots . sit back and relax and watch for tso weeks and spray again , just do not exceed 3 times in one stage ...

1. Any time I trim my beard, I put them in my garden. 2. Make sure you "crack" the eggshell" (squeeze it slightly) before you transplant. 3. Or you can put the shards of terracotta in the bottom of other pots to retain moisture. 4. Beer also works for Earwigs. 5. Better than manure is Worm casting tea. It is so easy to produce worm castings, just either collect worms and place in a container or cut off the bottom of a container , fill with dirt and bury kitchen scraps in the dirt, regularly. worms will migrate to the scraps, eat them and poop out that black gold. 6. "Bamboo is sturdy" ... and expensive! Grow it instead. It is super easy, just make sure you segregate them from EVERYTHING else. They spread like crazy. 7. "Apply 5-10-5 fertilizer bi-annually" .... unless you are growing root crops, then you want higher Nitrogen (the first number). The best thing is is a balanced formula, like 10-10-10. 8. Bake and powder the eggshells. They will give off calcium faster. 9. Never EVER spray urine on plants. If you want to use urine to deter pests, just put out a container of it. Don't even pour it around your plants. If you want to use the nitrates from it, put it in a large SEALED (You do not want to smell old urine) and fill with plant material and you will produce pretty good potassium nitrate (can even use it for propellant if you crystallize it... if you know what I mean). Do not just take advise from some voice on the internet. Do your own research from multiple (hopefully a lot) of sources. Remember the old joke, "if you ask 10 doctors the same question, you will get 10 different answers."
@123WorryFreeGardeningАй бұрын
Egg shells discussion here is interesting. We do crumble shells up and place them in the garden. I really don't know but perhaps the watering is doing a slow release. Either way it's a method to get calcium in the garden. My plants seem to appreciate it.

You must rotate some crops because they won’t thrive in the decay of their own varieties, tomatoes can be resilient but even this hardy plant will become diseased if repeatedly planted in the same location.
@plantsoverpills1643Ай бұрын
So the use of hair can work…but never use hair that has been treated…bleached, permed, etc… The egg shell hack is definitely erroneous. You’re better off either feeding them to your hens or leaving them to break down in the compost to be used years down the road. I recommend laying seeds to dry on wax paper as they can get stuck to paper towel, especially tomato seeds. It’s also a myth that coffee grounds will change your ph as once they’re brewed, they’re practically neutral. Unbrewed coffee is, however, definitely acidic. Tried the fish thing, didn’t make any difference except to lure damaging skunks and raccoons to my garden… put fish in your compost and rely on its benefits through your finish compost soil. I have used wood as markers and they rotted out so not convinced about the wooden spoon markers. Bamboo as stakes have always been useless for me…they snap or rot out…I use metal stakes. Using vinegar to kill weeds works for a few weeks and then they’re back with a vengeance because it kills the growth above the ground but doesn’t kill the root, so it’s a waste of time. Fertilizer is not needed if a quality compost or compost tea is added. Comfrey is a great plant to grow for that. I’m not a fan of fresh banana peels as they attract gnats that are very destructive. Save fresh kitchen waste for the compost, as it simply attracts too many destructive creatures if you apply it to your growing plants. Finally, the hack with pie plates is questionable. We have issues with crows coming and pulling out seedlings and as it happens these birds are attracted to shiny things…so pie plates are actually an invitation to them. It’s better to protect seedlings from birds with shade cloth and then uncover when the plants are well anchored and can no longer be pulled out. Also birds are an important aspect in the garden as they pick off bug pests that would otherwise demolish the crops. Otherwise, this video has some useful tips. It’s better to have gardened and tried these hacks than to just quote out dated myths. Times change and animals evolve.

Feed the hens other things which they need that egg shells contain; otherwise the hens will peck the newly laid eggs. Also seed saving only works with non-hybrid varieties (referencing the video's recommendation) but - just for general FYI for people who don't realize the plants they got from the garden centre may be hybrid varieties...
@plantsoverpills1643Ай бұрын
@@Kayenne54it’s true some birds will peck at their eggs. We found they’d do it regardless if they got eggshells fed back to them. So, we’d get out at a certain time every morning to collect the eggs before the hens got too aggressive. I always Google plant types to verify whether or not they’re hybrid.
