I love the video of the Claridge‘s hotel, and if I had the money to stay, I would choose that over this one any day. The general manager at the Claridge is is so congenial and I really enjoy watching that video and I enjoy the decor much more. I watch the last 10 minutes of this to see if they have any type of success. I’ve been in charge of people working under me and you can get good work out of your people if you treat them with respect so they want to do a good job for you

The senior management here speak in such an abrasive manner to the juniors. It's such crass, rough behaviour. It matters. This kind of behaviour filters out into the whole hotel experience. The Claridges staff were much more pleasant to watch in their treatment of one another.

I couldn't agree more. That aggressive, abusive style is completely stuck in the 19th century. Completely unacceptable in a modern working environment. Watching that head butler go from back room tyrant to scuttling, scraping, bowing crab-like creature really put me off. So insincere. And the guests. So shallow. I stayed at the Savoy Hotel in 1987 with my parents. And it is a significant Landmark. It's a great Hotel, and now it's even better; it looks excellent and steeped with English traditions, and when you're staying there, you feel like an English prince.

I can appreciate the high standard of quality that is matched with hard work and effort in attaining such a feat. Similarly, at one time back in the 1980's, I worked for a wealthy family in Regents Park who lived in one of the white grand classic Doric column mansion villas which overlook the park. My role there was that of cook/ Housekeeper working nearly 24/7 with only one day off. Whenever parties at the house were held, the pressure was enormous to perfect everything down to the last detail. For instance, out would come the matching eiderdown quilt to match with the curtains and the carpet fibres in the one room had to be brushed exactly to an upright position with me on my hands and knees crawling around on the floor to achieve it. So it was a lot of work between us. And of course, the gold taps in the en suite needed brushing up to attain their bright sheen. A chauffeur and one other housemaid and myself made up the entire staff to work and manage the daily running of the place. The Mayfair laundry was always a key feature with folding items to be packed and sent off for cleaning each week. That was a job in itself! There were times, madam ( she was addressed by) would shout the place down if things weren't done to her satisfaction despite the tireless hours of toil and hard work. I am glad I did it when I did as it was an eye opener working in 'high society'! So when I look at this documentary, I feel a bit tense, feeling the enormous pressure that is put on the staff to try and please and accommodate such requirements and needs. They do well to take the criticism levelled at them, inorder to better themselves as part of the establishment they have become. They all deserve a medal....

Having just watched a series about the Mandarin Oriental. The Savoy looks really shabby in comparison. The Savoy staff were inexperienced and working under a fright driven regime. This showed very obviously and was quite uncomfortable. Unbelievable moments that stood out among many, were covering a stain on the carpet with a wrinkled offcut and gleefully thinking it wouldn't be noticed, and the fact that even a simple and respectful thing like wearing a poppy correctly was overlooked. No reception desk and no luggage in the hall means no beating heart to the hotel. Over all the impression was sadly one out of ten.

Havent quite managed to live up to this video, we where there a few weeks ago for a meeting, no doormen when we arrived or left, no front of house welcome when we tried to enquire on where to go. The Dorchester was a little threadbare the last time I was there, but the staff are all wonderful, and the service impeccable. Still prefer the 41 for any lengthy stay. I think their Conservatory Suite is the finest hotel room in London, and the staff are almost telepathic in anticipating your needs.

This is why we have such a rivalry with the French. Actually, I think it is ridiculous to keep to one’s home country’s time zone. Traveling gives one the opportunity to learn the other countries’ cultures. This is a great documentary, thanks for sharing here, bigjollie! The Savoy is very nice, and staff are all solicitous, and genuinely interested in making your stay pleasant. Claridge's has gone downhill, I'm afraid, and the Dorchester needs a complete refurbish. But, it's the people who make a hotel, and that's why, for my money, no place beats Hotel 41 in London! After flying all night, any good hotel will do for a day or two before heading out, but if you're spending any time in the capital at all, those 25 special rooms at the Rubens are the best 5 star plus places to stay. Thank you, Mrs. B!

After being in service for 25 years I have learned that when I’m stressed everyone is stressed. That’s when things really start falling apart. I tell my team to know your job & keep smiling. I disagree, Stephen Fry is their "Blogger in Residence" he's more an employee than a guest. And if he is a guest, he's being greeted with a heartier welcome than the regular guests, because of his status in the hotel.

I have been following the Savoy series on the tv. I think it is a great hotel and fascinating what happens behind the scenes. Does anyone else dislike the head butler Sean? I hate the way he treats his staff such arrogance instead of encouraging new staff he seems to take great delight in ripping them to pieces.

the whistling head chef is lovely and just gently encouraging his staff to get the food out. the butler's 25 yrs of experience suggests he was trained 25 years ago and sadly hasn't changed. 3 years and 3 weeks to prepare and the rubbish the Prince had to pass was inexcusable, don't leave crap in a boardroom when 2 royal families are due to arrive. the Manager's curt "toast' to 'Savoy' could've been grander, and more welcoming. pay 220 MILLION, to have to walk past garbage that shouldn't be there on your first walk through. that's really shocking.

Like at school and work, we hated the strictest teachers and bosses at the time, but later in life, you realise the strictest teachers and bosses were the best one's who taught you the most and then appreciated them, the butler is correct. Having working at the Savoy for a few years is a big credit on a CV. If you can't handle it, it's not for you and maybe an Asda or Tesco or a Travel Lodge is for you.

There is a HUGE difference between being strict and expecting everyone to present themselves in accordance with the standards of the hotel, to being condescending, arrogant and putting people down. It appears you cannot separate the latter from the former. Please don’t manage people - in my 25 years I’ve seen managers sacked for that because they didn’t know the difference and moral hit rock bottom.

Linda Justin well you are right i use to work at savoy as a waitress they treat you like a worthless property and actually there has been many many issues raised about the mistreatment and payment for employees, it is a very toxic environment

I worked at the Four Seasons in Vancouver Bc Canada and know what service should be and in no way was the managment staff hard on the employees at this level of service you must be better than the hotel down the street . No matter who it is . ❤❤❤❤❤😊 they all did A Great Job !!👍👏😀

My goodness so much fuss. But I suppose filthy rich people expect all that. The bar looks fabulous! The river restaurant very elegant, I like that. All the workers are trying so hard. I think they are impressive workers, some have never worked in hotels before. I like this video it's interesting to see the goings on behind the scenes! :)

When passing through London in the 1960s, I had the occasional drink in the Savoy. I thought the decor a little tired and the waiter I often had, although efficient, wore ill-fitting tails and yellowing, plastic collar and cuffs.
