A few years ago my friend who stayed at Savoy invited me to visit the hotel. I coughed when I was leaving the revolving door. Suddenly, a truly kind doorman, Genci, sent me a bottle of still and asked whether was I alright. That moment touched me because I wasn't even a guest there.

Someone may have said this already, but those chandeliers are Venetian (murano) blown glass. Maybe they did a plastic version but I would think not. In fact, "Pierre Yves Rochon used the finest materials from Murano glass chandeliers and silk wall coverings to Italian linens and marble floors." That type of glass looks surreal to me. Enjoy your videos.

I worked at the Savoy back in 1991. When we were shown round the hotel on our induction course we went into a dining room, where during the second world war Sir Winston Churchill was having dinner with 12 guests. When they realised there were 13 people round the table they got a place laid for the hotel cat making the total number 14. There was a little statue of the cat in that room.

Excellent to see them using a Coravin to dispense your wine. It’s a wonderful device that allows you to take a single glass of wine from a bottle without uncorking it. As the wine is dispensed the Coravin infuses the bottle with argon which settles on the top of the wine to prevent oxidisation. Essentially you can take a glass of wine out of the bottle and then put it back to continue aging as normal.

@@stuartrowena4371 The Coravin is a relatively new invention and quite niche but it works extremely well. It has interchangeable needles so you can swap out the main one for a specialist vintage needle if you need to. I've been using a Coravin for a few years and I love how it allows me to enjoy an expensive bottle of wine over a year or more. The only caveat of course is that the bottle has to have a real cork so that it can naturally reseal after the Coravin needle is removed from the bottle. It's a cool gadget!
@stuartrowena4371
@stuartrowena4371 8 ай бұрын
Hi Jonathan, very interesting. Years ago my old Dad used to have a vacuum pump which removed the air from inside the bottle so keeping it fresher for longer. It sounds as if the Coravin is somewhat of an improvement on that however, particularly with the addition of the Argon gas. Happy dining.

Tim, The Savoy is a brilliant top notch hotel, we stayed there 6 nights in 2022 for my wife's birthday, we got a 3 nights for 2 offer and worked out about £4500 for 6 nights accom. plus we got free breakfast daily for the 3 of us too. The pastries that come with your breakfast are insane, just so good. We also enjoyed the atmosphere of The American Bar. Even when you check in, you get a glass of champagne in the waiting room as standard. The only thing that irks me, same with The Balmoral in Edinburgh, is the 5% additional (optional) room charge that supposedly goes to the maids. I'm thoroughly against this charge as everyone pays enough for the room itself that the hotel can afford to give them that extra 5% if they wish out of their own profits.
@hatchling88
@hatchling88 8 ай бұрын
Surcharges are a scourge on the hospitality business. It's just another way for businesses to increase prices without seeming to raise basic rates. Possibly they are meant to compensate for those who do not leave a tip for the housekeeping staff, but I don't think guests should be tipping those staff members who are just doing their jobs behind the scene... pay them a living wage and maybe increase the basic rates if necessary. That's just me, tipping and surcharges may be hard to get rid of as businesses like to play those games. Oh well
@edennis8578
@edennis8578 7 ай бұрын
@@hatchling88I agree. I worked in a hotel as a maid when I was in school. We were paid minimum wage, and the head housekeeper kept all of the tips for herself.

It's sobering to realize as terrible as the 5% automatic surcharge sounds, Savoy is already one of the better example within hospitality business. With Savoy, at least you wouldn't have to worry about it not actually going to the maids, imagine the infamy! Many less scrupulous locale either let the maids distribute amongst themselves, which usually mean seniors take almost everything, or part of the fund getting skimmed off to god knows where.

What you said at the end, I'd noticed. For 'wow' factor, I loved your stay at Claridges, but what struck me here was how friendly and relaxed it seemed, and that goes a long way! Definitely cosy and welcoming vibes that made me smile. I once stayed in a hotel very near Buckingham Palace which was dog friendly. No idea what it was called now. I was so touched at the welcome we received. When I entered the room there was a lovely dog bed with dog treats on it and a little dog menu for room service!! I booked the resident dog sitter so I could meet up with a friend for dinner. He turned up in his full porter's uniform, complete with gloves and asked if I'd like him to walk Johnny (my dog at the time). When I returned from a very nice dinner, he said he'd walked him around the palace and off he went...but I noticed he'd coiled the dog lead up beautifully and placed it on the table. Those memories stayed with me way beyond what I had for dinner and everything else - no idea what I ate! The thought of Johnny being walked around the palace by a guy in uniform and white gloves will always make me smile. I thought the same with the little touches they did for Casper. Just lovely!

The Savoy Hotel was off grid when I worked there in 1979. In its basement were its own power generators provided by The Strand electricity Power Company! Hence the reasons for its lack of sockets in the rooms.
@spoffspoffington
@spoffspoffington Ай бұрын
The sockets he pictured are for a 5 amp table lighting circuit. They would probably trip out if used for a hair drier. They must have 30 amp ones or they couldn't use a vacuum cleaner. A standard Travelodge room will have three 30 amp and six USB sockets over two sizes.

Just a tip' The Chandelier is VERY expensive. When you tapped it and said it was plastic...nope. That tube on the arms of the fixture is hand-blown in Venice. It is only made in Venice Italy and they have the glass blowers on their own island called Muraneao (it is where are housed for BLOWN CRYSTAL AND GLASS) and you can watch them being made the same as they were centuries ago. They are hollow and allow the wires to be placed in them. The rest of the crystal is real also...not glass. The patent for the design is still active and owned by the glass blowers. You have to have 45% lead for it to be "lead crystal". You can bet that the chandelier cost $$$ Thousands.

@@autiethoughties6898 you're correct, it's not an expense they can't afford but the attention to detail when making things like that more custom is partly what you're paying for. It creates a memory and a keepsake for the child. Something like that would've made my day as a child.

Hi Tim. I can answer you the question about the rounded plugs. We have used them in Stage lighting for years! The reason they are different is it's the lighting ring, like you find on your fusebox at home, rather than the 'ringmains' which are your sockets. (Not a plug-socket by the way.. it's a socket.. not a plug socket!! The plug, is male, the socket is female. Arggh!!) They are either 5 amp, or the grown up ones are 15 amp, as found in theatre. I do events and have done a few events at the savoy. Interesting Video! 😉👍K.

When I was a Telegram Boy in Liverpool over 55 years ago some of the older office blocks had 'Ascending Rooms' with seats for the passengers. One was a manual mechanism - ie counterweight operated by the lift attendant. The faster modern - ie post WW2 -lifts' had a seat for the Lift Attendant - yes someone who pushed the buttons for you!.

At this point, with the popularity of your channel, I have to wonder if the hotels know who you are and are making extra efforts to keep you happy. For the Savoy, I recently watched a doc on it and I believe that they do go the extra distance to satisfy your requests. I'm curious, what was Caspers Prize for completing the tasks?

If I had to choose between the Savoy or the Ritz, definitely favour the Savoy. The Savoy felt like it was more classier but not too snobby if you get what I mean Tim. Personally I thought the dinner looked a bit naff especially with how much it cost but the breakfast was the star of the show, looked top notch!! 👌🏻I would definitely pay £45 for that breakfast if it wasn’t included with the room. Oh look! You stayed here too!!! 🎉🎉 I’ll repeat what I put on your other video about my savoy stay in 2014: I was tired after a long shift at my job once (I think I finished at about 11-ish pm) & I knew I was due back to work for 5.30am the very next day & because I had savings; instead of going straight home. I decided to treat myself to a hotel stay; so I walked a few yards to the nearest one which was ‘The Savoy Hotel’ London. Because I got there late; I was told they had no rooms available; only a ‘junior suite’. So I felt they was lying to me because I had my work uniform on (security) & I sincerely feared they was being racist and just did not want me there; so when he said “we only have a junior suite available”, I suspiciously replied “so you only have rooms for kids? Who books rooms just for children?!”. He giggled at my ‘hotel lingo virginity’, as he explained that ‘the junior suite’ is a larger space than a standard room and it’s more a suite than their standard room. I too giggled along with him and i decided “I’m here now; so, why not!”. And it cost £1500. As well for the night. Unfortunately, I did indulge in the mini bar & I recall checking out with the mini bottles and the champagne (assuming it inclusive at that price 🤦🏾‍♀️), AND; I also took my Savoy dressing gown. To cut along story short; I did enjoy my short stay at the Savoy. The bathroom was fabulous. The bed was huge and stiff but I was tired so I slept well. The room service was a let down though because my meal ‘spag bowl’, didn’t taste up to ‘the £1500.’ Per night price tag. But breakfast was up to scratch. I went to work from there. I recall I got told of by one of the managers at my job; so I left work thinking “🥺I’ll just go back to the Savoy and cry”. To which I stopped myself and repeated what I’d just thought 🤨and I ended up laughing & smirking a lil 😃realising “oh yeah! I’m going back to the junior suite of the Savoy; what am I sad about?!!? 😂 I arrived at the savoy bagless and left there the next day like a bag lady. But; I did get charged for the mini bar; and I got charged for the dressing gown; because I discovered that they was not included in £1500. Per night price tag. Thee End. 🙏🏾🙌🏾👋🏾🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

🖐️😳🤚£911.00 for a KING SUITE in 2024??!!!?! 🧐🤔🤚hmmmm 🤨 I promise you I did not make up my night at the Savoy. Even your room is bigger than the one I had. I am REALLY baffled and I wonder if I’m owed money. I’m going to goggle them right now to do a price check as I will say no more at the moment. I’ve even still got my dressing gown. But let me go goggle a price check & try & workout what on earth took place. I used to work at ‘The Sanctuary Spa’ convent garden as the security guard; and I am no liar.

You are a lovely couple/ family; really down to earth and unpretentious. I enjoyed watching your hotel experience. I did just google a price check and the hotel does have a large variety of rooms on offer. To be honest, I booked in late in the night; so all cheaper rooms was gone 🤷🏾‍♀️so I accepted what I was offered at the time. It does bug me a tiny bit on how much less for the same that you was charged; but I don’t recall walking miles to my room as you displayed. When you two was eating; & I noticed the car park view; I recall that that’s the exit that I left at feeling like a right ole bag lady. I pictured me passing by; whilst you two ate. Your review is very spot on; as I was also not expecting the old fashioned furnishing's to the room (suite 🙄) with this strong black & white floored bathroom. I did wonder where your alcohol was in your mini bar though; as what’s the point of a mini bar with just tonic waters in it (maybe they’ve changed over the years 🤷🏾‍♀️ hence no alcohol in the room). I’m glad you toured the hotel too, because I didn’t; because I felt under dressed in my security uniform; so I was room service all the way. Anyway; another great review and it was nostalgic for me. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you and may God in Jesus Christ name continue to bless your adventures. 🙏🏾👋🏾

Tim, did you realise when you were swimming that you were directly above the Savoy Theatre when the theatre burnt down in the 1990s when they rebuilt it was installed there and has not been moved if a fire? started in the theatre the bottom of the pool came crashing down in the theatre and would help to put the fire out. Regarding the Broderick or other celebrities appearing at the theatre, it's normal that they will stay in private residences or if they really want Savoy apartments can be used but it very rarely happens.

Those round sockets for the lamps are an old standard in the UK. The small ones are for lighting only and rated at 5A so you would struggle to run a hair dryer from them, they are also very often switched by switches near the doors to allow the lamps to be controlled together with the main room lighting. These days you really only see them in hotels. The larger round pin sockets are rated higher but have long since all been replaced by square pin 13A sockets - some are still around in theatres for stage lighting equipment although with the spread of DMX control systems those are disappearing too.
