In these areas, as in other rod art outlets - Doc Ski is a legend. Your videos are so enjoyable to watch. The dogs are hilarious and welcome. Thank you so very much for sharing your nonchalant, yet immense, talents and easy to follow personality. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Thank you!

@docski3773 жыл бұрын
I use either a Wilkerson Thin double edged blade or flush cut wire cutters. I pull up the threads a little to create a small gap then trim and burnish the tread to cover the ends.

I was watching U tube videos to try and find out how to do multiple trim band in different colors without the bump of a knot or a twist. I had this video from awhile ago and I'm so glad that I found it again. Your methodology is spot on. Easy to follow clear and to the point. Thank you!! Anyway while watching videos I came across another one of yours in which you make mention of a Veterans program called Project Healing Waters. I couldn't believe that you mentioned them. I am a Vet in Florida that is trying to help out with the program here to build Fly Rods I love thread art and welcome your wealth of knowledge on the subject. If I have any questions is there another way to contact you? Thanks again you are helping a lot of people more than you know.

@docski3775 жыл бұрын
Great catch, you are in rare air by finding that which was actually suggested by one of my students to see how closely people look at the work. I do stuff like that from time to time just for fun.
@thankfullife79685 жыл бұрын
I was wondering what the sawblade might look like if the one side you wrapped clockwise and the other side counterclockwise. They’d be opposite directions. Don’t worry about the dogs you had me so completely focused on what you were doing I didn’t even notice them.
@docski3775 жыл бұрын
Depending on the direction and technique variation you can go from saw blade to tire tread to olive branch. Fun technique overall

Do you have a way to connect the decorative bands with a chevron or X wrap running between them? Awesome video! Very informative!
@docski3775 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are asking. Pretty much this type of work is done on the tie off sections of crosswraps and cannot be connected as I think you want.
@devo7215 жыл бұрын
docski377 if you don't use the loop to pull the inlays through, how do you clip them short enough to be hidden without cutting the other threads? Thanks!
@docski3775 жыл бұрын
I think somewhere in my videos I show it pretty good but it is simple. I lay a razor blade on the flat wrap next to the inlay thread sticking out. Get it close to the inlay thread then pull up on the inlay and against the blade. The flexable thin double edge Wilkinsons seem to be the best unless you have the ability to get #11 Surgical Blades. Hope this helps

I'm new to rod building and I have always been fascinated with rod wrapping. I love this design and can't wait to try it myself! Do you coat the bottom (gray) thread with anything before doing the decorative wraps? Thanks for the very informative and inspiring video!

It depends. In this case the gray is raw nylon so I did coat it with CP but not finish.

Doc - are the horizontal taped threads still on a spool or did you cut a certain amount of thread to tape on the blank?
@mko97975 жыл бұрын
Hey there I'm just curious what you do to the tag end of the threads on the right side, do you just trim them off at the end or somehow hide them under the black main thread?

I trim them off with a very thin razor blade, then burnish the main thread back over the tiny bit showing.

Hey Doc, How difficult would it be to line up 2 turns of this variation and get them to line up so it is a longer saw blade tooth? It might look pretty interesting, and I have never seen it done before.

I have done a couple variations similar to what you are asking and though it wasnt that difficult, I really didnt much like what I ended up with but I have some more tests I want to do and some other variations, like wrapping more than one MAIN thread at a time.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I really try to make rod building fun and help others thru some of the learning curve a little faster. When I started building it was hush hush then I broke the dam and created a couple professional videos and let the dogs out. When I produce one of these short videos I try to do the best I can but sometimes get thumbs down and it bothers me. Oh not that I think everything I do is perfect(far from it) but that the folks not liking them dont help me by making comments that would help me improve them. OH Well. I was married to a wonderful woman for over 30 years, had two children. A fantastic boy who seem destined to be a success at EVERYTHING and a daughter who tends to make life a challenge for everyone around her. The Ex and I are still best buddies but realize living together is poisonous to both of us. So Now I seem to be married to fishing. Yep I am ex military 22y 9m 3d and some hours. Retire HMC. Two tours with the Marines gave me the nickname Doc. I bleed red, white and blue. If you follow me on FB you will see that for sure. If you are curious I am James Labanowski from South El Monte but my son is also James Labanowski actually I think it is James Angelo Labanowski Jr. but you wont be confused if you look us up. He is young and a hunk and I am old and worn out. lol You might want to friend me because some stuff about fishing and rod building dont make it to my video channel or Doc Ski Rods page but do make it up on my FB personal page. Again thank you for the wonderful comments and your service to our great country.
