Today we will look into some Benefits of Using Saw Dust or Wood Dust in your garden. We will also look into some basic science on what problems happens when you add saw dust to your plants and How we can make use of this concept for the benefit of our plants - that is Saw Dust Hack for your plants.
Sawdust or wood dust is a By-product or waste product of wood works like sawing, planing, drilling sanding and so on. It is composed of fine particles of wood and Here by Saw dust, I refer to both fine saw dust and also tiny wood chips.
So, Before I list out the benefits or Uses of Saw dust on your plants and garden, lets quickly know what happens when you add sawdust to your soil.
Some people who use sawdust for mulching or soil amendment might have noticed a decline in their plants’ health, making them to believe that sawdust is toxic to plants. Actually, This is not the case. Sawdust is woody stuff that requires nitrogen to decompose. This means during the process of biodegradation, the process may suck out nitrogen from the soil and thus away from your plants’ roots, making your plants weaker. This is called “Stealing” Nitrogen from your plants. This happens when you mix saw dust directly into the soil without knowing this concept. But generally mulching with saw dust may not cause this problem, but still with some precautions, you can enjoy certain benefits of saw dust in your garden.
Well, keeping this concept in mind, we will list out the possible uses of saw dust in gardening: The only action required is adding extra Nitrogen to your plants in the form of fertilizers like decomposed cowdung, NPK and so on.

I see more benefits of sawdust as a deterrent to insects and weeds, rather than as a nutrient for the plants since it can take a full year for it to full decompose and suck out nitrogen from the soil that the plants need. More generally, I prefer to just use sawdust in composting.

Hello im one of your many followers i have a question regarding saw dust . Since it has disadvantages and i cannot mix it soil. I was thinking before i watch your video to use the saw dust at the bottom of the pots just so i cannot used so much if i use big pots coz it would make my pots quite heavy and my plant stand might not be able to hold it longer time mu purpose really is to fill the pot with sawdust at the bottom part and the rest will be soil will it steal the nitrogen content of the soil ?

Hi. Bottom mid or top. It will decompose and use nitrogen. If you replenish nitrogen in form of fertilisers like one or two handful once in 8-10 days, that should take care of all.

Dr Sahib Namaskar Very good information on Pros n cons of Saw dust, actually I was using saw dust in my soil, could be the reason of damaging my lot of plants. But Dr Sahib, many Gardner suggest that we can use well dried cow dung cake just crushed, I have already used about 10 CDung cakes recently mixed in my soil mix with v compost and Bone meal. Decomposed cowdung not an issue and also sun dried one is good. Just observe plant growth and health, that's it.

Sawdust sucking nitrogen, this a hype. A decomposed sawdust blends well in compost. What is bad are those from chemically-treated wood. Natural sawdust is great when sparingly mixed in a compost pile especially those used in poultry bedding. Although in The Philippines, urban gardeners prefer cocopeat and rice hulls as potting soil mix. The latter still retains some fertilizer sprays from the rice farming system.

The nitrogen stealing thing isn’t as bad it seams it only takes a really tiny amount and only affects area around 5mm It happens when Bacteria decompose wood, they take the nearest source of nitrogen which is the air, but if it’s buried it takes nitrogen from the soil To put it simply don’t put it directly next to plants or in the soil

Don't use saw dust as mulch it's high in carbon when in contact with soil robs nitrogen and plants fade into yellow soon it's a very poor soil amendment use leaf or grass clippings as mulch

I have tested and no benefits only harm and soil ecosystem doesn't gets any benefit from saw dust instead burn the wood make biochar or wood ash which is very rich in minerals
