Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto remains a widely used treatment for symptoms attributed to benign enlargement of the prostate or simply BPH. BPH occurs frequently in men beginning after age 50 and manifest as urgency, frequency, nighttime urinations, straining, hesitancy, dribbling and inability to completely empty the bladder.
The active ingredient in Saw Palmetto remains to be identified. Considerable controversy surrounds the optimal method of extracting the raw product into useable phytotherapy. Preparations differ significantly between France, Germany and the United States.
Whether St. John’s Wort actually provides relief remains a matter for debate. Studies demonstrate about 40% of men note improved symptoms with the herb. This precisely matches the frequency of benefit with placebo therapy. Several large double blind studies conducted with funding from the NIH cast doubt that St. John’s Wort offers any advantages.
Studies conducted with funding from the various manufacturers suggest modest improvement with the compound. Problems with commercial extracts include adulterants, added or substituted vegetable oils and use of different plants. The FDA does not assure either the safety or efficacy of St. John’s Wort.

So basically what you're saying is that it may work but we don't know how it works. Growing conditions can enhance or deter the usefulness but we cannot possibly know those conditions. The extraction procedure affects the percentage of active ingredients but we don't know which ones that are affective and we have no clue as to what the most optimal percentages are. I just took two capsules. I will let you know if it works.

It didn't do a thing for me. Unregulated supplement manufacturers can and do lie to you, and then between confirmation bias and the placebo effect there is plenty of room for some skepticism. What is it in the herb that would work? The supplements you buy can and do vary widely in characteristics. "It worked for me"--why would I take your word for it? I have no way of knowing what you took. I don't understand why someone would be skeptical of "the medical establishment" yet believe a corporation that hopes to make a lot of money by selling you something that has no standards for production.

Just a quick question about the name Luis. I'm a school teacher and the first time I had a student with your name I had to force myself to say the name with the correct pronunciation because it sounds like a girl's name in English. I taught (for a short time) in Yuma Arizona where 80 % of my students were Hispanics so I had to learn how to say the Spanish names. Anyway Luis was a great kid who taught me how to say it.
