I've been dyeing my sawdust, but I'm anxious to try your paint method. Here's something you might have already observed: different woods give very different kinds of sawdust. For pine needles, poplar is wonderful. Crosscutting it gives beautiful fine needles, unlike sawdust from any other wood I've tried. For flakes, on the other hand, oak works well.

This is great! Super way to add scenery and gives the possebility to Experiment With meny different collors at a low cost, instead of buying a New bag for each variation in collor / size. This method will give my Three (only) bags of ready to buy foliage some serious competition! Thanks for sharing:)

I just got an idear, maby you can use it (if it works). To dry the sawdust, take a tube from a kitchen roll and put some of the paper from a vacuum cleaner bag over both ends with the sawdust inside the tube, then hold the tube vertical over the hair dryers opening and blow with the hair dryer trough the bottom so that the warm air blows the dust around while drying the sawdust and separates it at the same time.

I tried the food colouring method and it works great! Took about 15 minutes. I mixed a small amount of water with red and green food colouring, mixed it all around then put it in a pan on low heat to "fry" all the water off and it dried back to it's original form, only green. I could have added more colouring to deepen the colour and I didn't grade it ether, but it turned out great and would make good grass too!

You could also soak the sawdust in different colour variations of food colouring and water mix, then leave it out to dry. That way it won't clump and the colour would be deeper/stronger... Not if you're in a rush however ;)

Brilliant, ruddy brilliant, mate. Liked your tree tutorial, too. Would it be possible to scale them in 'N gauge'; without the 'trunk' being out of scale; that is to say the thickness of the wire used? My reason for asking is if you used thinner wire, the strength may not be there. Thanks.

It does not take long to make some yourself, if you have a saw or rasp and some wood. :)

Hey Phil what do you think of hairspray instead of pvc glue ?
@PhilipStephens00710 жыл бұрын
I have tried it, but the hair spray was not very strong. The foliage tended to rub off, but the PVA glue does not to the same degree.

Some say it works. The stuff we have here was not strong and sticky enough and the foliage dropped off little by little.

tried hair spray, it degrades. Tried PVA, tends to clump. Found spray mount glue the best but its expensive!

Hi, Phillip. Below should answer your question. N Scale: Gauge 9mm, Scale 1:160, 1.91mm/foot (or 1:148 2.06mm/foot in Britain) A scale first properly pioneered by Arnold, N gauge was quickly exploited by modellers who lacked the room for larger scales. Since its inception in the 1960s many other manufacturers have started production in N scale and the quality of models has just got better and better. Fleischmann introduced digital equipment ten years ago and many locomotives are now DCC
