Just a thought, but I am wondering if that wee lateral wobble could have contributed to the cutter pushing off? I'm thinking that the feed will progress the cutter while the wobble moves the cutter away from the work piece. The taper looked to be more than the cutter wobble though. On the other hand, I was already expecting a possible problem when we knew you were not taking a full cut.

So curiousity question. I have not watched the video to completion yet but initially hearing what you were doing. I have not seen anyone do this and wondering how feasible it would be. I have seen a number of ways to do the soft jaws but I have not seen anyone do softjaws with a sliding dovetail in which they could be able to change the clamping area with different shaped gripping jaws to fit different work depending on what one is doing. Possibly even making it to where you could change between soft and hard jaws without a lot of hassle.

Say one wanted to take the wobble out of that saw... could that be a candidate for flame straightening?
@Smallathe5 жыл бұрын
My soft jaws are made from 90deg delivery boxs edge reinforent cardboard. Cheap, very nice, softer then aluminum and easily replacable. My tip: add 2 strong magnets that will hold it to the jaws. Mine have a small ridge on top and the magnet snaps just after the ridge - and they snap into position and do not fall off. Hope this helps!

The Safety Data Sheet for the Flitz Brass and Copper Tarnish Remover suggests the main ingredient as Urea Monohydrochloride. Web searches indicate that that chemical is created by mixing urea and hydrochloric acid.
@gottfriedschuss59995 жыл бұрын
Michael Briggs, You are correct. To anyone using this stuff, use your goggles! It is corrosive to your eyes. I’m sure Adam meant phosphoric acid. Dilute solutions, around 15%, satisfactorily remove tarnish from copper and brass. Personally, I don’t want any of these products in the clean part of my shop. They are all corrosive to your expensive machine surfaces. My silver solder pickle bath resides outside in warm weather and in the dirty part of the shop during cold weather. Best regards, Gottfried

Hi Adam. I'm a long time fan of this craft and your work but no practical experience since high school metal shop. Looking at this would it have been possible to 'gang' two saw blades together effectively widening the slit to remove the whole middle section in one pass? Thanks for sharing with us.
@michaeldurling7935 жыл бұрын
Adam, good to see the K&T back to work. Does it really matter with a slitting saw which direction it feeds? I think of a mitre saw in operation, it's climb cutting which holds the work piece down and pulls toward the fence. Just trying to understand the difference.

Nice vid. I’m curious how parallel those parts are after cutting off with the slitting saw. In particular, how parallel are the first two with respect to one another given that the second one didn’t have any material on the outside to hold the blade vertically. That would give a sense of the deflection of the saw. I assume cutting like this is a roughing operation. Thanks as always...

I have several cylinders that use the locking wire to hold the gland in. The hook on the end of the wire is sheared off and the wire looks corroded in the slot. Do you have a trick to get the wire out or are the cylinders trashed? Also do you have a public email that we can communicate in?

Phosphoric acid is an ingredient in many colas, which is why Coke is known to remove rust, clean bugs off of your windshield (old road trip trick - follow up with wiper fluid) and so on. You can also use most colas to passivate steel and iron after de-rusting with muriatic acid etc. The phosphoric in the cola will prevent flash-rusting - just let it soak for an hour or so. I've heard diet RC Cola has the most acid, but can't say for sure.
