Nathan has had some incredible slabs come off of his LT35, but those Walnut slabs got his beat. The darkness of the heart, contrasting with the light of the sapwood is impressive. And they were free.

This is also a different species than what Nathan is milling. It’s all great!😬

I'm not going to argue on the flavor of cherry or whatever, but those slabs of wood are just like masterpieces from mother nature... just incredible, and the ones with rot or insect damage, when making a table top or any piece of furniture, keep them and fill them with epoxy, it will look awesome!

good looking walnut that would make one sweet book-match table. You might want to look into "Titan attachments" I bought quick detach forks for my JD3230 for about a third of the price JD wanted for them, they have grapples as well. @NorthwestSawyer7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! My first mill was a small manual unit. In less than a year and a half I was able to turn it into this! You can too! As far as drying goes, Mostly air drying for now. I plan to build a shop this spring and hope to have a kiln in it. Until now, the majority of the wood i've been sawing has been cedar and fir which dry pretty easily.
@MayorOfGoodells7 жыл бұрын
Northwest Sawyer do you paint the ends and ratchet strap your bundles?
@NorthwestSawyer7 жыл бұрын
I do put anchor seal on the ends. I have clamped wood in the past. Many people do. I think that it helps. With the really unstable wood, I think clamped will cause it to crack but I don’t know that there’s a way around it.

We have some yellow cedar around here, but I've never sawn any. On my channel, I saw mostly hardwoods, and a lot of crotch wood slabs I get locally. I'm a furniture and cabinetmaker, so I put that stuff to use. I've been sawing white pine for a timber frame build later this year, and am on the lookout for more of it. They just burn that stuff here, sadly, so it's hard to get my hands on decent stuff. No market for the tree services to haul it to a mill, as the price per bd foot is so low here. I'll be watching....

amazing walnut slabs! I am close to pulling the trigger on a mill... struggling with which one... have been all over the map from $6k to $26k... haha.. Need to figure out what i am capable of making with all the wood without spending thousands upon thousands more on woodworking tools ;-)

Well, if you buy a Wood-Mizer, they really hold their value if you decide it’s too much.
@HardyBrothersOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Northwest Sawyer that is what I thinking. Woodmizer is in Indy, about 3 hrs from my house. Norwoods is upstate New York and the ship it in a crate. My dilemma is do I go for overall ease of use and efficiency with hydraulics or go the more manual route and learn the ropes. I have very hilly terrain and a tractor much bigger than yours so I’m better off moving the mill than moving the timber. It’s just a matter of opportunity cost. For now it’s a hobby purchase with intent to build outbuildings and possibly guest cabins. Trying to decide if I spend $10k vs $20k where would I spend the other $10k. Haha. And if I’m gonna spend $20, why not go full hydraulic and spend $25k. The circle is vicious. 😃
@HardyBrothersOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
My other thing is I want upgrade ability to hydraulics. So maybe the 35 without and add later or do I go smaller and trade in or resell when I upgrade.
@NorthwestSawyer4 жыл бұрын
My first mill was a Woodland Mills HM 126. It was a small manual mill that cost just under $3k. I could mill a 26” diameter log 10’ long. It’s what got me realizing I could make good money with a mill. I built it into a trailer that could saw a 23’ log and sold it for $5k. There is a lot to be said about having hydraulic log handling on a mill. And again, the value will stay in the mill.

Did you happen to notice that your cherry log did not have a lot of branches on it like a tree that you would find in a. Orchid and it has bark on it like a birch tree. That tree has three names for it in the state of Maine forestry booklet. It is really called black birch , sweet wood or cherry. A lot of people call it cherry but fruit trees do not grow tall. I just thought I would through that out there.

Do you sell most of this or make stuff with it as well, what do you see most people making with the more unique slabs? I was thinking about getting a swing-blade sawmill since it has cleaner cuts and is faster but downside is making more than one slab per log is off the table.
@NorthwestSawyer6 жыл бұрын
Most of what I’ve sold has been dimensional lumber-to-order or lumber I’ve sawn on-site for people that had the logs. I have sold live-edge shelves for a lot of money compared to the dimensional lumber but most of my money comes from the dimensional stuff.

Hi there, Quick question about your sawmill experience. I'm trying to decide between buying the lt35 or the lt40. In your experience as a Sawyer, how is the lt35 holding up? If able to, would you buy the lt35 over the lt40 again? Do you think you would be more productive with the accuset option? Thanks
@NorthwestSawyer6 жыл бұрын
I’ve had no issues with my mill after almost 40 hours of use. I bought the lt35 because it was the closest to what I could justify spending. If money were no object I would certainly go bigger. There are options for the lt40 and up that aren’t available for the 35.
@zachplante50296 жыл бұрын
How about setting your cuts? Is that easy enough/efficient without a system?
@NorthwestSawyer6 жыл бұрын
The lt35 comes with simple set. This allows you to program two different board thicknesses and I think it works awesome. Once you get the hang of it it’s very fast.
