The mill wheels are "toed" outward by two or three degrees this keeps the blade rolling off the backside of the wheel, when it rides back the bearings on the guides keep it from riding all the way off.

No, the other end is balanced even though it may look asymmetrical. Basically you could spin 1000 pounds on one side and 3 pounds on the other and it wouldn't matter because they run on separate axis's.

There are 3 ball bearings on each side-Top, bottom and one on the back of the blade where there are no teeth. The one on the back keeps the blade from running off the back of the wheels and the blade doesn't go forward off the wheels because the wheels are not aligned exactly straight, instead they are pointing outward by 3 degrees . So the blade wants to go backward but the back bearing stops it and it can't go forward because the wheels are "toed out." check the "toed out" video i have.

@simonsimon405 The big wheels are toed outward by two or three degrees, which makes the blade want to fall off the back side of the wheels. When this happens the bearing guides roll on the three sides of the blade that have no teeth holding it there. In other words bearings roll on the blade to keep it on.

I've read that the winch raising and lowering can be a little wobbly. Perhaps adding a clamping assembly to the saw head would stabilize this?

No. the part that is touching the actual blade is made from cutting board plastic so it doesn't really wear on the metal.

@meanmike777 Sure, but a gas motor is less torquey than an electric of half the hp. If you do try it you have to recalculate the rpms of the new motor and you will end up with different size pulley wheels, so that you end up around 5000 feet of blade per minute to the log.

@Greg77630 I don't have any gas plans but if you go that way you just need to figure out the RPMs and the horse power needs to go up because you loose torque on a two stroke engine. So say a 16hp. The feet per minute are 5000 so you just do the math backwards starting at the engine, to the first pulley, second and then the big band wheels. My design for the platform would have to beef up if it were off of my concrete floor in the gargage. Other than all that not much should change.

@tulipgraphics Also, if your blade needs to be a different size they make most blades to custom lengths. I have resharpened mine 2 times so far. If you need any more help as you build your mill just ask and I will tell you whatever I can. Make sure you start with the wheels, shafts and pillow bearings first, then the rest of the machine.

@tulipgraphics Cook Saw Manufacturing will probably ship internationally and my blade is 10 feet 3inches. I use a 1inch blade, but you can also use the 1.25 inch blade. You should call them to order the blade, that is how I did it. I think my blade is their " super c " not really sure though. They have different types. Just ask for one blade the first time to make sure it works. You can resharpen them with a "dremel" tool, if you follow their instructions.

I am pretty creative to a point but something this dangerous I wanted a closer look which you've provided. I am going to build my sawmil, me and my buddys work with wood and are not that good with metal, so we will try first from wood if that won't work we will try to do it from metal. When you roll that first 4000 pound log over the aluminum, it will probably damage it. I cast aluminum as a hobby so I know how soft that stuff is compared to steel. You could make due with it until you get steel or you could sell the aluminum to get some steel. The aluminum, in tube form is worth a lot more than steel. Either way tell me how it works out, sounds interesting.

Hey. Nice, simple design. But how do you keep the band level? The fit tolerances must have to be very tight between the column and guide on the side without the "boat winch". Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's mostly the way the math of the aircraft cable and the weight of that whole assembly head.

I'm wondering if this can't be accomplished with unistrut for those folks that don't have welding capability. Use like 1 5/8 green, then you could use spring nuts and prefabbed angle brackets? What do you think? Would probably need to add the additional down stabilizers on front and back.. BTW, thanks for being such a great guy!!!

Do you have plan on how to make this saw mill portable? I saw manmike777 wanted to add a gas engine. I have many trees on my property and it isn't practical to move them to my house (not on my property) as logs and I don't have electricity especially not 220 there yet.

+LOSMINIUNS HD Las guías tienen cojinetes que tocan el borde plano de la pala. Las ruedas se giran hacia el exterior 3 grados. Con los 3 grados, la hoja trys para caerse de la parte posterior de las ruedas, pero no puede debido a los cojinetes de guía.

I'll send you an email address if you need me to look at some things, as far as the aluminum goes, the best thing to do is just explain over the phone to your local metal recycling business what it is you have. They will explain the rates for your specific metal, because the rates change daily. Also, it might pay more to sell them on Craigslist.

Here in the United States we have a store called "Tractor Supply Company inc." and "Harbour Freight" these stores probably have them also.

When you tap the button for download a submenu will pop out just bellow the red box, you must pick the only option in that little box. It will say: "Sketchup 8 Model" when you pick this it will start to download. If you haven't downloaded Google's Sketchup program then you need to do that to be able to view the model. If you are worried that Google's program isn't safe for your device or computer then just watch my video of measurements instead, if you go to my list of videos on my channel you will see this one : kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3vanqt_f8psetU.

I do clamp them. However my Australian buddy drilled a couple holes and welded nuts to them. He then just drives a bolt in to press into the hole that presses against the uprights. His name is Zaunchers here on youtube.... youtube .com/channel/UCwXW8U6Jl5Kk0f6hUyn8M6w
