I bought his plans and had a couple of questions and was unable to contact him. Now I know the reason! On the saw boxes, I see where you put some small bearings to maybe make the boxes go up and down easier. Is that the case? I'm getting to the point of adding shields but still have a ways to go. I'm going to try and make it power driven!
@atlantisdiving110 ай бұрын
You are correct! I did put some additional bearings around the boxes that go on the vertical posts. In hindsight I should have had more play between the boxes and vertical tubing. When you weld the joints they tend to tighten up due to contraction. I am so glad your build is near completion! It is so rewarding to use something that you created from scratch! I should have had a mill 40 years ago, I could not even imagine how much lumber I could have milled and what I could have built having access to that lumber. Take care. Robert

Hi. I'm in the process of starting this ( Texas Bens) saw mill . My 1 concern & question . With the 1inch angle iron track for the wheels to roll on. Do you have issues with sawdust building up in the groove between the large frame angle iron & the smaller 1" angle iron. Thank You.
@atlantisdiving12 ай бұрын
There is some saw dust that will build up between the 1” angle iron and large angle iron, mainly on the discharge side. Every log or so, I run a brush or my finger along it and get it out. Not a big deal. I like the track off the ground as it is easier on the back to manipulate the log, or when clamping. Enjoy the build!

Will you share (sell) the plans ?? Thank you
@matthewengholm59969 ай бұрын
How big of log can the sawmill handle?
@atlantisdiving19 ай бұрын
I can cut a 32” diameter log. The plan allowed for a wider width - you just needed to space the frame apart more. The track length will allow me to saw a little over 16 feet. In hindsight, I would have made it accommodate a 20 foot log.

I have an idea for a superior all around use bandsaw mill. It is like an alaskan mill but is all electric. The two hubs are ebike hub motors, about 12 inch diameter or so, and the supporting frame is lightweight, as hub motors are lightweight for what they are too. The motors are driven in paralell, and the driver is high current, not cheapo chinese shit electronics. The power is connected with either a battery or a high current dc supply. Solar or extension cord or whatever makes most sense. The main advantage is no noise, dust, smoke, vibrations, ANd the logs can be milled in place, as this is a much easier thing to handle, the logs dont need moving. The waste is just shavings and offcuts and that will be fine if left on location or whatever. 2 hub motors instead of one power wheel and one follower means you get twice as much avaliable torque, Less likelyhood to break a blade, and better tracking. The tensioner can be aired up tires, and alignment can be done with shims. This has all of the advantages and very little disavantages. If it works on 120v that would be prefered, if not, then i think 48vdc is the only other sensible operation voltage, like the motors accept stock. They deliver alot of power and torque, I think 3kw per motor is easily attainable. That means 6kw of low loss power transfer. Low vibrational loss, and smooth laser like cutting. I would make one that can do 10 inch depth 42 inch width. The starter board straight edge method works great. and its very easy after that first cut, which is also easy. Then the slabs can be put on sawhorses and cut diemsionally with a circular saw. It makes most sense to leeave them as slabs, stacked dried and somewhat cured, in sun with black tarp. Overall, I think it would beat all other sawmills. Have a nice aluminum frame, light, anodized, with a throttle handle and a big flat platton. The tool would be useful and durable and easy to repair. The wheels are very sturdy though, and the motors too, because bikes take lots of differnt loading. What do you think?? Yours is good concept, but is not as streamline as it may seem. I think it needs to be lightweight, so no moving logs, just fork the stack when its cured in place.
@atlantisdiving111 ай бұрын
The idea certainly is innovative. I wish I had experience with an Alaskan mill. I am going to do some research now! I want to find out more about electric bike motors as well - it’s something I have not tinkered with. One consideration that folks talk about is having a large enough diameter of the wheels for longer blade life (smaller diameter wheels fatiguing the blade). Would a person be using a typical blade like the bandsaw mills or using a thinner version like on a bandsaw in a shop? Would the blade wander more? I can’t wait to read what others think of the idea… l love how innovative people can get when one poses a unique idea!
@RobertSchmitt-u7l11 ай бұрын
Blades are a whole other subject also. I would like to have a blade with fewer teeth and larger gullets. Like the 90 tilt sawmills, they can have just 2 or 4 tungsten teeth on a circular blade, for efficiency. SO, maybe custom blades could be ordered. I would think 1 tooth per 2 inch and large gullets would do the work. Less drag, easier sharpening, which we all should master. I think wide blades for tracking and stability are necessary for saw milling specifically. The kerf of the blade would limit the bend radius, mostly. limiting too is the weld, but not as much as other parameters. Honestly have not looked into blades as much because I have no sawmill or bandsaw at the moment. Just a chainsaw mill which is a handful and more. @@atlantisdiving1
