Great video, Ron. Thank you. Has anyone compared this amount of vertical play with the Dewalt, which shares the same rack and pinion system? I would guess that all of the saws with this design will do the same. You nailed it when you said that there is a compromise with a small saw at max rip. If SS would have made the max rip 6" less, then folks would complain about that. It's plenty accurate enough for a CTS.

My 7491 at the same width as this SS (24 1/2"), the fence support is 99.9% level with the table. The CTS I returned, was off by 3/16". Just unacceptable for a $$$ saw. I'd expect that from a lesser saw like a Ryobi or Harbor Freight saw. At full 32 1/2" extension, my 7491 its about 1/16" off. I have a small video showing my 3 plus year old Dewalt 7491 and the fence. I agree that for most people, this SS will be good. For me in my home DIY shop, I can't fit a big saw, so the most accurate JS saw is what I want. Unfortunately, the SS wasn't better than my cheaper Dewalt, IMO for what's thats worth.

Good video Ron. I have adjusted the cam and it does remove some of the play. However, when I adjust the cam it causes the fence to be very tight and hard to move. Is yours hard to move when the cam is tight? I don't think the movement is going to be a major flaw for most people. However, I do think for $900 (plus tax/shipping) that I paid, SawStop could have done a better job with the fence. Lesser "quality" saws doesn't have the play in the fence. I guess I was more disappointed than I was anything else as I am a fan of the quality I had come to expect from SawStop. Again, good job on the video, and well explained. Been a fan of yours for years.

My CTS came out of the box working well so I had to take it out of adjustment to create the sag. It did have some uplift but nothing that impacted the accuracy of the saw and I did not noticed it until I was asked about it. I made the adjustment by trial and error. One of the Smart Woodshop Fam pointed out SawStop instructions for doing it properly. www.sawstop.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/CTS-Puck-Adjustment-Procedure.pdf

My dad purchased a Sears Contractor Saw in 1979 & is out of financial necessity (and nostalgia) that it’s the centerpiece of my shop today. Looking today at the art he created with the help of that crued yet stout saw & just a few other tools seems like a miracle. Thanks for these tool reviews Ron. It is very appreciated. My go-to for large material is a track saw (used on my Paulk bench btw) so I am usually not having to rip at 24 inches at full extension on my DeWalt corded 748 10". If I am, it is usually something like shelving where I have repetitive cuts of smaller/wider material at some measurement close to max saw rip width. I have not noticed fence/fold-down material support sag but unless it was obvious, it is not something I would have actively tested for. Like you stated, I normally am pushing material through and not down and if anything, am lifting the material up slightly until it is fully supported by the saw deck. When I can amass more re$ources, I would like to invest in the SawStop brand for the added security of the second chance. If I do, I would want the saw that will support the dado stack. My current DeWalt does not and I did not think to check at the time of purchase for it. My bad. I am currently building DB2 for my walkout basement and am having to do everything by router now that I do not have dado ability. Not too much of a problem yet but the drawers are next and I like that alignment and glue channel to set sides into drawer bottoms. (still haven't forgotten you on the cubby jig....will get you a dropbox link soon! Life is busy currently.) Again, thanks for the tool reviews Ron. Love the content!

If there is a sag, the only possible issue would be a slight bevel on the cut and not necessarily changing the ripped width of the cut. This would be amplified when ripping taller/wider stock. Try ripping a scrap piece of butcher block and check the before/after of bevel angle.

@@vaughnmaurt5013 Vaughn, Not sure I understand. My situation is that I sold my property where I had a 1000' shop, plus a 400' studio. Now I have a one car garage and a 12 x 12 outbuilding which is now a mini shop. We are in process of discussions with the Planning Dept for a larger shop/studio, so until we can build I am seriously impaired. My entire previous workshop is in a 12 X 40 storage unit. This to include my 12", 3 hp, bench saw with a sliding table which has been my friend since 1983. I do have the Saw Stop Job Site Pro...(my second one as the first had a seriously distorted table top, it was returned and replaced) I bought one primarily because Saw Stop advertised it as "the most accurate job site saw available". My secondary reason was the safety feature. It has some flaws, one being the fence and accuracy, plus some minor issues. It would be an acceptable saw for on the site construction, but not for my intended use. I have seen the 731 video. I have looked at the Compact Saw and found it to have that flaw, for me, a serious flaw. On my inspection of the saw, the cam, even if adjusted, still has the fence area dropping with very little pressure. I cut 24" frequently so this would be annoying. Accuracy is paramount for me. I do not have a track saw, so no familiarity, but have been seriously considering one. Are you proposing the track saw is a better choice over a/the compact saw?

Great info. TLDR, when not set up well, there is a little play in the fence when ripping 22" or wider cuts (ie, 22" to 24.5"). For a saw that is half the price and about half the weight of their "portable" job site saw, I can live with that. Heck, when cutting that wide I would probably choose to use the track saw/circular saw with a track.

I watched 731's video a few weeks back, and his follow up #short from just a couple of days ago. He did contact SawStop support about the issue. You bring up a very valid point about the slop only being in the upward direction, and about the adjustment fixing the slop at full extension. 1) If that cam is adjusted to reduce/eliminate slop at full extension, does the fence remain properly aligned when it's not fully extended? 2) Why, after several weeks of waiting for an answer, doesn't SawStop's support make that recommendation to 731? That's just poor customer support!
@1975oldschool
@1975oldschool Жыл бұрын
I bought this saw and returned it due not for the slop going up, but the fence was 3/16's lower with the fence at full extension. At that point, the material support is worthless IMO, specially for a $900 saw. My Dewalt 7491 at it's full extension of 32 1/2" is about 1/16. At 24 1/2 like the SS, it's perfect. I have a short video showing my 7491 and how much better it is. If adjusting the cam is the answer, ya they should communicate that. Instead they lost 1 little sale from a home owner for what that's worth.
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop Жыл бұрын
The support height is easily adjustable. Dewalt is a good saw, the difference is the safety brake. If that isn't important then, I would stick with the Dewalt. I have had many Dewalts and it was my goto portable saw for a long time until SS came out with the Jobsite saw. For me that feature is #1 and worth the price. The good news is that today we all have so many good choices and can pick through them to find what works just right for us. When is comes to buying tools, wait as long as you can, buy the best you can afford, use it as long as you can and don't second guess yourself. There will always be something shinier and newer. 😎🤙

I plan on comparing the two saws, but they are both excellent quality choices. I would go with the JSP if size and weight are not an issue. The JSP is hands down a better saw. PersonallyI am leaning toward the CTS as it performs at the highest level for what I need a TS to do. My #1 must have is the safety brake #2 is portability. These are the only two portable saws with the brake and the CTS wins hands down in portability. The best choice will depend on individual needs not what a reviewer thinks.

So in general, when the fence is extended as far out as possible, the front rail only has about 4" overlap with the saw body and track supports. Meanwhile, the track is cantilevered out around 14 to 18" as a rough estimate. That is a long cantilever to support ratio which would allow potential for deflection in the extended fence. From afar, I'd surmise that if they used a longer front track to create a longer overlap with the saw body, even when the fence is fully extended, then it will get longer support for the same extention and reduce the cantilever ratio. I may come up with a different opinion if I got my hands on one in real life, but that's my best estimate from what I see from a video. Thanks for the overview.

Did SawStop engineer shortcomings into their small saws on purpose to promote sales of their higher end saws? The JSS has a crappy fence adjustment, the CTS has a good one. The JSS will accept a dado blade, the CTS will not. The JSS comes with a folding stand, the CTS does not. The CTS is a "compact" table saw. The JSS is a "job site" saw. Seems to me that a job site saw ie one you take to a job site should be the most portable/lightest saw available. A compact saw would be more suited to a job site if it was light enough to carry. The chances of cutting dadoes at a job site when building a structure is not great. The likelihood of having to carry it inside a building or closer to where you are cutting the wood is huge. You do have to have power. Just seems to be misplaced priorities.

What was done here was 4 rip cuts where every other cut only effected each other but not the next one in line. I agree that the when checking your cut off piece the difference in width is double the error of the rip, but this could of been tested by just making 3 rips. Love your videos.

@@TheSmartWoodshop Ron, you squared the fence when the saw was set up, but it was squared over the main table. It looks like the fence extension system introduces an error that would be in the range of 1mm over the height of a base cabinet. If you put a 4' level along the blade and your 4' track along the fully extended fence, I think that you'll find that your parallel guides will show about 1mm difference when they contact the level if they're spaced at the height of a base cabinet. The 5-cut method requires the edge, that has just been trimmed with the blade, to be placed against the fence for the next cut. The material is rotated 90 degrees for each cut. Usually done with a cross cut sled to check that the sled is cutting at exactly 90 degrees. Here is a demo of 5-cut method kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2q9lmZnorxmmNE

While I like Matt from 731 Woodworks and watch his channel regularly, he turned away a lot of people from this saw with a situation that was far less severe than it initially appeared. He did double down on it yesterday on a live stream. I have to disagree with him as well because you can make the Dewalt flex as well.

SS should have communicated that fix though. The flex up isn't an issue, the SS I returned fence support was 3/16" lower when fully extended (24 1/2"). At that point, what is the point of the support isn't it's that far off. I'd expect that from a Ryobi or lesser saw, but not a $899 saw. My 7491 at 24 1/2' fence support is perfect. Sure, flex when picking up, but when sitting there locked in, it's perfectly flat with the table. At 32 1/2" on my 7491, it's only 1/16" off. At that width, I'm using my track saw.

@@1975oldschool I think we are asking a company to overcome a lot of engineering issues for applications their saw is unlikely to experience. For those at a job site, this probably isn’t an issue. I don’t need to make 24” wide rips. Probably 98% of my cuts with my CTS will be 18” and under and 90% 12” and under.

@@AaronGeller this is unfortunately probably very true, most people aren’t me who want precision from a small form factor saw since I can’t fit a bigger one in my small home garage.

@@1975oldschool I imagine the new Festool compact saw will be able to provide that for you. Whether or not those units will be available in the US, it's hard to say. But if they will be, they'll be double in size but have many more features and more accuracy.

The title is a quote from another KZbin reviewer that I have been asked about multiple times. My saw doesn’t have that problem which I demonstrated in this video.

I understand the safety feature. However; I am on my 2 nd Dewalt job site saw I think the new one is the 4561 or something like that with the wheels and perfect stand along with a Russo out feed ! Dead on! I mean dead on accuracy which is King for a finish guy like me! Saw Stop is over priced, not accurate out of the box & just a fad! It’s nice u can afford it u earned it with hard word ! However, I say 90% of us finish guys shy away from them !

@@TheSmartWoodshop no disrespect meant Ron and I said what I said for one main reason? Which you know what I am going to say ; Cost!! Your paying the cost of two quality saws for me! Like I said a new DeWalt with a Russo out feed which if you look a considerable amount of YT pro finish guys use? For instance Spencer Lewis ; Inside Carpentry ! I hv seen several videos whereas guys are NOT happy with two things on the Saw Stop? One price two accuracy out of the box! A lot of their add on are gimmicky and really do not do much for a guy that hauls that tool around all day , everyday! If you run a good quality tool, with a rifing knife , and a good blade (I use tenaryu blades) and forest on my shop cabinet saw ! I sharpen then maybe once a year and save money rather than buying the red blades with 2nd rate carbide on the blade where I used them and tossed them! In 5 yrs I hv one blade on both my saws!. So it’s not being disrespectful Ron cause I hv a tremendous amount of respect for you! You are one of thee smartest finish carpenters I hv seen! Gary Katz , Spencer Lewis , & Ron Paulk ! (Sorry I butchered your name buddy) Anyway I hope we’re good?

I always thought in your system, you only used the table saw, for narrow rips, how many times are you going to make wide rips on the table saw, on a planet with no gravity, this just seemed like a pointless subject, and was over critical of Sawstop Or maybe point is this is just clickbait!

That 731 guy is not a carpenter. He's a hobbyist/maker that makes cutting boards and hammers. I wouldn't trust his opinion on tool performance.

I think Matt @ 731 is more than qualified to give an informed opinion on this saw or any other tool. The guy makes way more than cutting boards and mallets. He's built quite a nice woodworking business for himself. A lot of people, myself included admire his passion for this craft and appreciate the work he (and his wife) do to help others in their woodworking journeys.

Hm. Looks like SawStop posted a procedure on their web site that addresses this bit of tuning. Looks pretty simple. www.sawstop.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/CTS-Puck-Adjustment-Procedure.pdf

Mike, thanks for the heads up. I figured out just the puck portion using trial and error until I got it working. My saw was adjusted properly out of the box so I had to go the opposite way to introduce the upward play, I did make my fence a bit too tight which makes the handle rotation stiff. Now I will go back can use these very well written instructions. Thanks again. Ron
