My grandpa died a couple weeks ago and they played this song at his showing. He would always call everyone boy so every time he says boy it makes me sad and they he says he grew old that one really makes me cry because I never knew him when he was younger I only knew him when he was older. Rest In Peace Sargent John Lee Phillips. I miss you so much.

Sorry for your loss, life is so precious and I feel we take it for granted. This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. I raised my son mostly myself and remembered walking him to his school bus and cried like a baby when it drove away. I'm 48 and he's 20 he still lives home with me and I know how fast life slips by. Love as much as possible. God bless.

My uncle Kevin was like my father because my dad wasn't really ever there. He taught me about history and how to throw a ball and everything good that I love today. This song has me in total tears. I didn’t know he even knew this song. He said it remains him of his first day of school and his trip to college perfectly. My husband and I were there when he got on that bus the first time. He turned and said mom dad I will be alright. Don’t cry mom. He told me the same thing tonight. I can’t help the tears. Some day he will be in my shoes too. Thanks for the song. It’s still so beautiful and meaningful today

When the second verse comes on, I flashback to my cousin who went to Vietnam. I can't imagine that, being drafted with no choice. My cousin came back even wilder than before, never settled down. He never talks about what happened, not that we've ever asked him. I'm just grateful that he didn't get hurt or killed, that none of my family who served has seen true combat other than that. My younger cousin is now a Marine in Japan and I pray for him constantly. God bless all armed forces and their sacrifice.
