My grandpa died a couple weeks ago and they played this song at his showing. He would always call everyone boy so every time he says boy it makes me sad and they he says he grew old that one really makes me cry because I never knew him when he was younger I only knew him when he was older. Rest In Peace Sargent John Lee Phillips. I miss you so much.

Sorry for your loss, life is so precious and I feel we take it for granted. This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. I raised my son mostly myself and remembered walking him to his school bus and cried like a baby when it drove away. I'm 48 and he's 20 he still lives home with me and I know how fast life slips by. Love as much as possible. God bless.

I've commented on this video for what seems like forever...I have a longing for a father that might have been like this for me. But, I took it upon myself to be this for my sons & daughter...I cry alone some times for my own self pity, But also pride myself in trying to be this type of father...Music will never be the same.

My uncle Kevin was like my father because my dad wasn't really ever there. He taught me about history and how to throw a ball and everything good that I love today. He was killed in a hit and run while I was deployed and the thing that hurts me the most is that I never got to say goodbye. I will forever miss my uncle, my father, my mentor.

This year my oldest son will graduate and next year my youngest will also too. This song is awesome reflection how I grew up and how I did the same dad with me.

My dad use to play this song whenever he drove me to school when I was in elementary. Everytime, as soon as I heard it, it would make my eyes swell up, but I never let him see that. Now that he's gone I look back on those days and consider them some of my most cherished because I am older now and I understand what he was trying to say.

Helping my son with his senior project. 10 songs that define my life. Gotta write a paragraph for each song and explain each moment that defines his life so far and plans for the future. This song has me in total tears. I didn’t know he even knew this song. He said it remains him of his first day of school and his trip to college perfectly. My husband and I were there when he got on that bus the first time. He turned and said mom dad I will be alright. Don’t cry mom. He told me the same thing tonight. I can’t help the tears. Some day he will be in my shoes too. Thanks for the song. It’s still so beautiful and meaningful today

Same here even as a teenager it was a much better time. Graduated in 2002 and it has been shit sandwiches and middlin years for most of my life. Now that i have a young daughter of my own i make an effort to be calm and patient something my dad was never good at, that said i miss the man everyday more so now that me and my sister have kids he would have loved and never got to see. I refuse to let my cynism and negative energy taint her. She makes me a better peraon everyday.

When the second verse comes on, I flashback to my cousin who went to Vietnam. I can't imagine that, being drafted with no choice. My cousin came back even wilder than before, never settled down. He never talks about what happened, not that we've ever asked him. I'm just grateful that he didn't get hurt or killed, that none of my family who served has seen true combat other than that. My younger cousin is now a Marine in Japan and I pray for him constantly. God bless all armed forces and their sacrifice.

Been listening to this for nearly 30 years and today is the first time I’ve seen the video. I thought the getting drafted part was an interesting take I had not previously considered.

The last part gets me in the soft spot. I'm divorced at 36....my father's a 4x married retired SSgt. I recall him as a sturdy muscled guy in his 40's and 50's. My sis told me he's shrank to about 150lbs and I spoke to him recently and his waning health is apparent.

i can relate to second verse... 9/11 just happened i was 17 getting ready to graduate and i was california bound afterwards,, i remember walking in with my girlfriend at my house and my mom handed me a letter from the military recruiting office i got in the mail. well my hands were tied and it was either continue my dream going to california or enlisting in the military. i remember my girlfriend crying saying please baby dont go i dont want u going to war. i went in and came home with a medical discharge.
