I remember a colleague introducing me to Saxon some years ago and I was like "oh is this a new metal band?" Color me surprised when I learned they've been around about as long as Iron Maiden. Truly a special band that has somehow slipped through the cracks.

This band wrote some of THE best heavy metal songs on the early 80'S (and I'm a Maiden fan) but they suffered from image problems, so they never became as big as Maiden but they could easily have been.
@emiliosanchez17842 жыл бұрын
Not only that, Bruce Dickinson is a hell of a businessman. IM is not what it is just because of Bruce's singing talents, but he also helped to create Iron Maiden product that became popular.
@anthonyramos16482 жыл бұрын
I’ve always said this about Saxon. They weren’t MTV darlings because of their look. Nothing personal against Dawson and Quinn who were losing their hair but it wasn’t marketable to the US market which is where they never got a foot hold. Sure plenty of die hard Metal-heads loved them here in America. But mainstream Metal markets ignored them. And they were getting screwed by their management too. That’s a very big factor. I still love them!
@LOTPOR04022 жыл бұрын
They were/ are in a different league to Deaf Leopard ,but never reached the heights they did .Poor management or record company that could not see how could they really were

I always thought they never produced anything deemed “radio friendly”. Priest has breaking the law and living after midnight, Maiden had run to the hills and number of the beast, to be honest most of that album is pretty accessible to the masses. Saxon don’t really have anything like that though. A shame as I think a lot of their riffs are superior and this song has one of the best of the era / genre.

I had no idea there was a promo and it looks fantastic over 40 years later and I know this edit is actually the version that appears on the A Collection of Metal compilation that was the first Saxon CD I ever bought 20 years ago. Saxon indeed remain one of the most iconic British Heavy Metal bands of all time. Their NWOBHM era classic albums (such as Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law and Denim and Leather) have aged like very fine wine.

Happy Birthday Graham Oliver born on July 6, 1952. He is an English guitarist who was born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. He was a founding member in the heavy metal band Saxon from 1976 to 1995. After being fired from Saxon in 1995, he initially reformed his old band Son of a Bitch with former Saxon bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Oliver

It is a strange concept to write a song about, I wonder how they settled or how the idea came about to write it about the North American airport power outage in 1965 that led to the Scandinavian airlines flight to be unable to land for many hours, epic song, I love planes and they seem to have captured the mood of 747’s lost in the night “strangers” the tension is captured very well
@miguelrubiorincon3904 Жыл бұрын
But what, s the background story of this song ? What really did happen with that flight 747 during that night?
@jimelliott33 Жыл бұрын
@@miguelrubiorincon3904 a major power outage resulted in that particular flight and many others to be stranded in the sky with no way to talk to air traffic control, if you imagine any airport there are multiple planes in the sky at any one time and it was pure chaos, nobody could land by sight as it was too dangerous so they went round and round and were re routed to other destinations if fuel was an issue, it was bad visibility too which didn’t help otherwise they could have attempted landing by sight
