@@Sirvalorsax On tenor I can only go up to altissimo F. I play on a jumbo Java t75 with 2,5 reeds. Should I move to a harder Reed to extend my range or just more practice ?
@Sirvalorsax6 жыл бұрын
The T75 is pretty open so I wouldn't recommend using harder reeds. It might work but why work harder when it can be done more efficiently? Since you can hit the "F" now, I would recommend switching to a "lip out" embouchure. The idea of the lip out is to alleviate the pressure you are applying to the mouthpiece to allow the reed to continue to oscillate. Think more "air speed' (subtone in the upper register) and less embouchure pressure (biting). It takes a while to develop the muscles for a lip out so give it some time. Also, you will find it a lot easier to get a bigger sound on a much smaller facing. I don't/can't play anything larger than a 0.105 7*. Good Luck!

I also purchased a $200 tube of cork grease, and wow!!! : every time I slide that mouthpiece onto the neck is like a hot date, it's like buttah. It has also greatly improved my sound since the chemical composition of the grease seems to better conduct the vibrations from the mouthpiece more directly onto the metal of the neck. I also have a bridge for sale, along with a horse with all his teeth, if anybody is interested.

for years I used a Selmer metal mouthpiece lig on my tenor link. I saw pictures of pro sax players with that set-up. I also used a Rov. Eddie Daniels model for a short time, but it had a funny little buzz that I'm only a heard. A Harrison H lig & of course the Link lig. Different ligs seem to affect the response of the altissimo and low note response. Of course I now play a D'Addario Select Jazz DM7 with a Rovner with the slits - kind of an updated version of the old shoe string lig but more noodle than spaghetti you know!
@claypufahl60745 жыл бұрын
Cool. Interesting to hear your opinions. I have gone through a bunch of ligs too for a given mpc to find a good match, has to provide the right amount of resistance and I find the fit to be a big factor. Also, can’t be too fussy haha! (And finding a decent fitting cap important too)

I pair my cryo Silverstein ligature with a selmer soloist D and it has really helped me focus my sound. It is very pricey but I do recommended buying the ligature if you want to improve as a player. It took time “breaking” in the ligature but as soon as I did I felt an improvement in sound, articulation, and even flexibility.

$200 is very steep and not for everyone. I don't know if I have a hard rubber mouthpiece good enough to justify buying another one though but I am more and more impressed by this ligature the more I use it.

I just noticed that you have the Silverstein ligature on backwards - at least compared to how it is shown in the instruction sheet. You have the three strings in front and two strings in back - it's supposed be two strings in front and three in back.

Thank you for posting this. It sounded great to me. Crisp and focused.I wish you would have ordered the cheaper "silver" Model also that is only $150 for a comparison as its hard to believe there is a difference, but what do I know.Also if you would state at the beginning if you paid for the items or if the company sent them to you (biased).I appreciate your videos and enjoy them a lot. I use a standard ligature on my Meyer HR alto piece. On tenor, I either use a Berg Larsen metal with the standard ligature, or an Otto Link metal with a Selmer metal ligature, because I don't like the Link's failure to hold the reed straight. I am using a metal Link on bari, and I am stuck with the standard Link ligature (which I don't like).

You should check out the Versa X on a Link. I messed with an Olegature and Silverstein for a while but eventually went back to the original Link lig, which has a certain fatness/depth/smoothness that you lose with the focus/brightness of those others. But then I tried out a Versa X and haven't gone back, it projects and speaks better but doesn't lose any of that lower end presence in the sound the Link lig has.

thanks for an honest review. I have been curious about these. A lot of people seem to like them. I like to use legere reeds, and one of the online clarinet teachers says that they should be clamped higher up than cane, and clamped tighter. My van doren optimum, which i have always been satisfied with, bottoms out and can’t clamp that high. It’s hard to know what ligatures might be adjustable enough. The silverstein caught my eye, but...$200! But I’d have to say, I did hear a real difference in your sound when you tried the Silverstein. I wasn’t expecting that.

I use the Cannonball ligature in my Alto with my V16 S+. I love the way it functions with my set up. I also feel like it has a certain bit of freeness that a standard rovner doesn't. It also seems to resonate with a few deeper harmonics that I like. The rovners tend to favor the upper harmonics for me. Especially the ones with the metal plates....like the BG, but the rovner Legacy, Eddie Daniel's etc. Even on Tenor I've been trying to find a used Cannonball lig. They are well made. I wonder what kind of ligatures Parker, Hodges, Carter, Rollings, Rahsaan, Mulligan, Getz, Sims and Chaloff used with their mouthpiece. They must have been designed, researched&developed and manufactured by an advanced team of PHd's in MusicoAcousticSonicology. I mean, let's face it: They all sounded pretty neafty. I can already picture Charlie Parker (especially) spending more on a mouthpiece than on a horn, and not pawning it afterwards.

I'm yet to discover a difference in the sound by use of different ligatures. For me it's all in the mouthpiece characteristics, placement of the reed and positioning of the ligature (pressure point) plus skills of the player, and that's where I admire your playing Sirvalorsax. You might as well use cable ties or shoe laces as long as it's tight enough and in the right place. The match of the ligature with mouthpiece and the functional aspect (like single vs two screws) is all that's important. I'm very much on board with Jay Metcalf's review of ligatures kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3LUfWSki7aZfNU where he also talks about the SIlverstein Works Cryo 4 and how it stretched over a year where it's beyond level of possible adjustment - as it's effectively made of a piece of string which stretches when used.
