I just learned about Kai after watching his Nicki Minaj interview. I suppose I'm too old to be his target audience. However, my initial thought was, 'Oh, what a shame, he must not be Black American.' Because one thing we can all agree on is that we have a rich culture. While we may not agree on everything, it's undeniable. It's also interesting that he's the one saying this as he transitions to being a hip-hop pundit, where hip-hop artists are now doing interviews with him and other TikTok stars over visiting actual hip-hop music platforms. These young people really do have me worried. Are we having a problem with our education system or is it social media where any idiot with a mic can broadcast their opinion? A British woman of Nigerian descent told me she didn’t understand why black Americans think there should be solidarity with other people of African descent , simply based on skin color. I met her at a social club for black professionals, so it wasn’t a matter of her disliking black Americans, otherwise she would not have joined such a group. But she honestly seemed perplexed that we as black Americans would expect to connect with other nationalities of African descent for that reason. I suppose if you were raised in a country where everyone looks like you, there is no such thing as racism, but I’ve seen soccer tournaments where (some) of the fans from European countries taunt African players by throwing bananas at them, so how could (some) African or Caribbean people not understand how racism feels? I’m especially disgusted by (some) African and Caribbean people who come to this country, and lump us all as lazy and/or criminals! Hell, other hard working black Americans don’t like black criminals either, but to lump us all together is sickening, so I want to emphasize (some) African and Caribbean come to this country and look down on us.

Kai has learned to play the anti-Blackness game. He has learned there is a benefit, including a financial one if he distinguishes himself from the collective. That call “I'm not Black,” is not enough; it has to be backed by action. We have seen and know the level of anti-Blackness racism in the gaming world, and pulling a Candace Owens he hopes it will garner more followers and hence more financial wealth.

The so-called Black Greek organizations began with a group of collegiate individuals who wanted access into Caucasian fraternities. They were DENIED admission and forced to start their OWN color/class appropriate fraternities and sororities. As a result of discrimination from the Caucasian groups, the newly founded black groups began discriminating against OTHER blacks who wanted admission into the black frats and sororities; creating stringent criteria and unobtainable prerequisites for many blacks. Hence, the "Brown Paper Bag," measure.

Black Americans do have culture. It's hard to see inside the United States, when you're surrounded by it. It's even harder to see when you don't know the full history of Black people in the U.S. Once you learn fully about the languages, food, music, religion, and traditions Black Americans created across time, geography, and shaped by the history of slavery and resistance, the creoleness that became Black American culture through contact with European and indigenous cultures, then it's easy to appreciate the culture of Black Americans.

These people who are telling people they aren’t black are these African immigrants to this country. There is no pan African diaspora because they have always viewed us as less. They call us akata which is a very derogatory term. We are not the same people and this whole thing needs to be highlighted how others feel about black Americans. Many of the black populations enslaved here were indigenous prisoners of war. Delineating is key. This pan African sentiment has been the albatross for Black Americans.
@khenderson66898 ай бұрын
As a mixed person, I am here to say that isn't correct. I'm in my 40s and still have to fight for my black card in our community cause one of my parents is white. I dated a Nigerian man who made me feel great because you are correct with that part. Many Africans do not see AA people as black.
@tyiingram98788 ай бұрын
@@khenderson6689 this is your experience and it’s valid for you, this doesn’t negate my statement in the least. Two thing can be true at the same time. Also, I never mentioned anything about mixed individuals in my statement so I’m not sure why it’s even a point of discussion. I’m speaking on black Americans in general. It’s funny that Africans don’t see American blacks as black, when the term was originally used to denote melanin dominant people born here and wasn’t used in America until the 1960’s. Africans have never been recognized as black ethnically, and have said they’re not black but African. Many didn’t know they were black until coming to the US. This is the reason why I made the comment. They use the term black when it benefits them meanwhile claiming they’re African ethnicity. Your last sentence highlights the hypocrisy found when other immigrants groups come to America. We labeled black both ethnically and racially, while other racially black groups identify with their nationality or continent.
@fistandpen25058 ай бұрын
False. I'm Nigerian. The last thing we're concerned about is policing who is "black" or not in America. We don't really care. Nigerians themselves although obviously they'll accept the "black" label will mostly self-identify as Nigerian or Nigerian-American. You don't even make sense lol.
@tyiingram98788 ай бұрын
@@fistandpen2505 I make perfect sense. I don’t have any reason to fabricate anything. I believe my seeing eyes. You all tend to use the term black when it benefits you. You may not be aware of it because it’s not directly affecting you. This app along with X and Tic Toc are filled with your countrymen trying to explain to us who is black in America, using phenotype as the marker, not lineage or culture. I’ve seen post where your countrymen and other Africans on the continent and the UK where coming for light skinned black Americans telling them they are not black. If you really don’t care then why is there so much chatter about in your spaces and in our. The Nigerian author Chimamanda has said in several interviews that she didn’t realize that she was black until she can to the US. She’s not the only one. You all are in a majority black country so why would you use black as a racial identify. You all identify yourselves according to your tribal affiliation (Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa) . The actions coming from Africans and Caribbeans, not all but more than need be, speaks volumes and has been the driver for American Blacks to delineate ourselves in order to retain our ethnicity and culture as Americans. So again I make very good sense.
@tyiingram98788 ай бұрын
@@fistandpen2505 you all do care because Africans come on various platforms and debate black Americans challenging light skinned black Americans blackness based on phenotypically appearance, not lineage. I’ve see the opposition on X, Tic Toc and YT and Nigerian people have a lot to say about who is and isn’t black. You all don’t call yourself black in Nigeria, but you refer to yourself as, Igbo, Yourba, or Hausa. Then will come here, adopt the term black one moment when it’s beneficial, but will turn to black Americans and tell us you not black but Nigerian. I make perfect sense.
