I never disputed they sold catchy nursery rhymes during a period where there wasn't much competition. After their first two albums , and the world gained higher standards with regard to pop music and moved on, they were no longer setting the world on fire. Older people who grew up on them still like them for nostalgia reasons but not because they were actually good.

People don't realize how difficult and risky are Mel C's vocals. She really is great at what she does. To pull all those F5s out of nowhere without ever going flat or having a voice break is something she should be praised for. She really was the only one who had natural talent to back up all the praise. Emma has a good soft harmonizing voice and Mel B also could somewhat sing. Victoria and Geri were only there for image reasons and to round up this Bratz Doll-like branding. I will say Geri was probably the "brains" behind the operation, which is why she left as soon as she could because she wasn't liking where this was going. However, all of them needed way more training all around. Mel C was tasked with carrying this group and nobody can do that, not even Aretha Franklin.

@@SDoesNotKnow Geri left because she was one with no performance training prior to joining (Emma went to stage school and Mel B, Mel C, and Victoria were all dancers and singers prior. Victoria did some off West End stuff and was the lead singer of a band. The Mels were also doing chorus line stuff) and they were doing performances and were all comfortable in interviews, leading her to think she wasn't needed anymore. Geri had a very limited singing voice and little rhythm. Victoria, when more confident vocally, is serviceable as a singer, but her voice is rather thin. Mel C is the best vocalist with Emma and Mel B both being talented enough to assist in carrying the group vocally. The vocal core is Mel C, Mel B, and Emma.

I remember when the Rolling Stones were having one of their come backs around late 1997 or early 1998, MTV, did a special asking younger fans if they preferred the Stones or Spice Girls. Most of them were young girls aged 10-13, so of course most of them said Spice Girls. Kurt Loder asked one girl why she liked the Spice Girls better, and she said because they can sing better, and he then asked her if she ever heard Posh Spice sing, then MTV cut into one of her solos from this very performance. That was one of the funniest things I've seen.

The girls were wearing a special make up that night, very accentuated with very dark tones. I personally loved it, as it showed a different style for them. Well, that was...interesting. First of all, they all look incredibly nervous - maybe because it was their first VMA and all of the American superstars were in the audience. And another interesting thing is that sound engineers made their harmonies during the verses practically impossible to hear. While Geri was singing, Mel C harmonized with her, but we can barely hear her. Same happens to Emma and Mel B in the choruses.
