Salam. If you’ve just started reading about Islamic history, Peshawar Nights would be a great start. Sayed Ammar a few years ago recommended two books on Karbala: one is Maqtal of Imam Hussain by Abu Mikhnaf, and another is Imam Hussain and the Tragic Saga of Karbala, by Ayatollah Ali Nazari Munfared. This book gives you a narrative of the journey to Karbala and the aftermath of what took place in Kufa and Shaam. I hope it helps.
