Wandering Turnip

Күн бұрын

A sad week for the Calder Valley. The wonderful Mytholm Works Mill Chimney which has stood since 1871, is to be demolished starting very soon.
It is Incredibly sad to see these important pieces of history, which stand so beautifully, being stripped away.
I have a great fondness of this perticular chiimney, as not only could I see it from my primary school playground, but it was also the first thing I ever filmed on my Wandering Turnip KZbin. So I am really sad to see it go.
If anyone has ever visited Hebden, you will know just how important these are, and I feel that something needs to be done to protect the ones we have remaining.
Work is due to begin on the 7th of October, so if you do want to go see it before it gets knocked down, now is your chance.
As always,
Thanks for watching
Until Next Time,
W.T

Recently visited Hebden with wife and 4 kids from BC Canada, the chimneys are all part of the ambience, the reminders of the industrial revolution and the stories that we can show in real life to our children. As you say Turnip a sad day, British history is slowly eroding when the rest of Europe are preserving it. I recently posted a short walk through Hebden Bridge on my channel, its not quite as captivating as your videos.

In the case of the mill behind the university that burnt in 2009 or so - had become a upvc window factory iirc - years and years of oil and grease from mill equipment was soaked into all the floors and took days to put out. Stank to high heaven too all across the city. But I do agree it's definitely purposeful where planning permission has been denied. Skipton properties did seem to have a lot of bad luck at one time....

The Victorians were a fascinating people. Their sheer ingenuity, engineering ability and wilfulness to build amazing machines and edifices with little more than hand tools; the kind of structures which we struggle to build these days even with our level of technology. How they conceived and built the Underground in London just astounds me. It is, in my opinion, a travesty that these last remaining monuments to those people are being taken down with little regard to the history we'll lose as a result. That said, most people these days stand on the shoulders of giants but give little regard to anything other than the latest happenings on their social media feeds. I really enjoy your videos, David and at least we have those to remind us of what was there once. Keep up the good work!

Appreciate the rant. My father was from Scotland and know a little bit about coal. As nasty as the history of fossil fuels are/were masons craftspeople, guilds all kinds of trades and unions brought us here today. Chimneys are beautiful human made things, engineered without computers and AI, without gas and diesel , but coal and steam The industrial revolution created the most delicate of things like mechanical watches, all kinds of surgical instruments, brilliant musical instruments and so forth. The spin-off effect is still with us Coal still makes nearly everything we still benefit from. I hope one day we will find other cleaner ways.

I'm 63 and in Butler Pennsylvania. You might have heard of my town lately. Anyway I'm 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.Steel city and coal mining county. The jobs are all good now. The old Bantam factory is here and they're chimney. Where the WW2 Jeep and trailer was made and designed in 1940. You blokes got a few during the war. Lol. I see that chimney everyday. And another is by Butler Memorial Hospital. I see it out my window every day from my highrise. I'll send you some pictures coming up. I have my coffee in the morning and the sun rises out my window over a chimney. Or I sometimes have some Earl Grey tea with an English tea pot. Obviously I think of you brother. No decent scones here bro but we have a mean fish sandwich and chips. It's a Pittsburgh speciality. Most of or Cod and Haddock comes via Denmark. Seriously Hot dogs and fish sandwich at the local food shack. So at sunrise 🌅 I have my coffee and look out the window and see the sunrise 🌅 over the chimney by Butler Memorial Hospital.

Your anger, upset and complete incomprehension of the decision makers who decided the tower needs to be brought down, comes across so clearly and it's obviously heartfelt. Our councils are all PLCs! The Police are a PLC! The government is a PLC! And there in lays the reason why all our heritage is being slowly but surely erased; greed. Meanwhile, all the grand building the councils (we) owned are being sold off for Chinese students and shops, when the high street has more vacancies than Skegness in winter.
