Things I forgot to mention: - I've had quite a few people walk up to the merch table after shows and say they listen to me on Spotify only. They say they know it pays poorly and then hand me 20, 40 or as much as 100 bucks to make up for it. I'd like to encourage this behavior. - The audio quality of iPods or streaming isn't perfect, but it sounds a lot better than the tiny transistor radio I grew up listening to. - JD Wilkes did the artwork for these t-shirts. - I really enjoyed wandering around Terre haute. Last night i was playing guitar with my pops (he plays fiddle and is 83) when he said he saw some TV host give away a vinyl album. He said i bet hardly any of them have turntables, they should habe given them a CD. Then we got into the fact that nobody has CD players anymore. He sat and thought for a minute then said well that sucks toes. I cracked up and we went right into Tennessee Waltz. Great night! On the ipod note, i adapted to that tech and enjoyed the ability to find new artists easily. The most enjoyment i got out if them was on my study abroad trips in college. On one in Chile followed Darwins path through the Beagle channel so i downloaded Origin of Species audio book. In Mexico i down loaded a ton of Ranchero singers, and in Nepal I downloaded some amazing old Nepalese folk songs. These days i try to go direct to an artists site rather than a streaming service. Always a good Saturday morning with Otis. Love from Texas my friend.

i personally think people are incredibly stupid to depend on the internet to have their music because the company can go under 1 day and there goes your collection. it's way better to own albums, cd's or have the mp3s because you can listen to them whenever you want without an internet connection. this is all part of that own nothing and rent everything forever system they are trying to push on us. if they ever decide they don't want you listening to a band then you won't hear it again if you don't own physical copy of it.

Imagine what Charles Darwin would write if he could read what had happened 175 later. I used the word ‘read’ as Darwin had no knowledge of radio as a medium of information and not to mention film, video, and the computer as an expanded medium. I am a few years younger than your father, but both my parents and grandparents would be flabbergasted to learn of how we access information.

i am 60 and one of the great mistakes of my life was letting myself be conned by the music industry and getting rid of my big vinyl collection to start over with CDs in the early 1980s. I have lost big on investments and things like that, lost a house in a nasty divorce in the years since & that doesnt bother me like trading in my LPs for CDs.

Interesting choice for your establishing shot, given the subject matter. That largely windowless building with the big tower was part of the AT&T Long Lines long-distance telecommunications network. It carried long distance phone calls across the country via microwave transmission, tower-to-tower, 30-40 miles at hop. It was also used to provide the feeds for TV networks and communications for the military meant to function during a nuclear war. It went into operation in the early 1950s and was phased out in the late 70s and early 80s as fiber optic networks took over. The Internet was originally bootstrapped on those fiber networks, but soon grew so much that things flipped to where voice traffic is carried over internet protocols using fiber optic data networks. That particular tower connected to Lena & Greysville, Indiana and Kansas, Illinois. The old horn antennas on the towers fell into disuse and are increasingly being removed, but the towers themselves often hold antennas for cell-phone base stations. That particular building used to be full of switching equipment for both the long lines network, but also local telephone service. It probably still supports local telephone & Internet service, but modern equipment needs a fraction of the space of the equipment that building was built for. When I was in high school back in the 80s friends and I dropped acid on a mountain pass that had one of those relay stations. Gradually I realized what it must be for and because focused on not attracting the attention of the authorities and therefore keeping watch over one of my friends who was kind of determined to climb the tower. It was a relatively small building, but now i know it probably had a larger subterranean bunker under it.

Otis , I purchased LPs from you & find great pleasure in having such an opportunity. As for the musical content of each, it’s been a wonderful experience of playing my guitar & singing your songs to friends. Their response;”Who/what was that?” , always makes me proud to have turned them on to new music, of which they hadn’t heard. I was then compelled to share your podcasts & contact information to have direct access to Ms Amy & you, filling their order personally. That never happened in the “good ole days”. We old timers are having to learn the electronic age of purchasing. Our artists are truly getting ripped !!

I'm at the exact age for year zero technology wise. I grew up having to buy punk rock cassettes from mail order list but was young enough to experience the internet in its infancy. and I continue to grow with it, so I don't know why I've never gotten along with any streaming services. I've really never found one I've used and liked. I own so much music that once I could take it with me on my phone everywhere i would literally just put my music on shuffle and I could find some new but owned for 10 years. I have a lot of compilation CDs from when record labels used to put those out and one day I come across this song from a band called City and Colour who I had never heard of, they grew into one of my favorite all-time artists and I had owned that CD for about 10 years. I found a lot of artists by watching KZbin channels like yours from people talking about artists or music history. The KZbin playlist of a song you love are pretty good at dropping in a few new ones but now I'm old enough that I'll just buy an artist entire catalog when I discover them. Which is good and bad because I end up with a ton of music but I don't don't obsess over one particular album like I used to but it makes the shuffle function on my phone a discovery tool.

I make my living on the stage. Streaming, merch, social media all serve the shows. I’m thankful I own it all, too. I’ve used the analogy of fishing in every pond I can get a line in. Might get a big one someday. But, it really does just come down to me and my fans, we grow together, slow and steady as it is. I’m in the Jimmy Webb school of no music listening so that helps me stay away from streaming at large. Ha! Love the videos and your insight. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!

The world needs more folks like you. It’s funny with all the money in this biz that the artists are usually at the end of the bread line. Have to have merch to make any kind of living. Spotify makes music more obtainable but I think it has hurt the listeners value of music. Not just the money but the appreciation of it. To me anyway. Hope that makes sense. Love your work here and your music.

Hey Otis I completely understand why you would feel the way you do about Spotify. I Feel pretty much the way you do but don’t have to suffer at their hands as I’m not an artist who has to rely on being paid by them. When I first started streaming music I was shocked at how little artists were being paid for their work from the stream companies! So I too went to Tidal specifically because they paid the artists the most money. They also offered higher quality audio as well. I also use Band Camp. But mostly I try to buy hard copy ie CD’s or cassette directly as possible from the artists themselves to try to maximize the amount of money that goes to the artist. Think I’ll go check and see if I can pick up some of your music from Band Camp! Thanks for all the wonderful stories, interviews and music you share with us here on Your UTube channel definitely my favorite refuge on the internet!

There are so many format and platform choices for how to listen to music. To each their own. The upside of this internet age is DIY produced music has a chance to reach an audience without huge cost to the artist VS pre-internet /pre-streaming and physical only AND The artist can choose what the content is vs having to please a record company saying they don't hear a single.

Hey Otis. Big fan for a minute now. But I gotta say, I discovered you because of Spotify. In fact, pretty much any artists I've discovered as 'new to me' over the past 5 years has been either because they opened for a band I was seeing live or Spotify. My other big thing about Spotify is that I'm a disabled artist. I'm on disability. I have NEGATIVE money. I have no connections. I cannot get around to network. So, digital is really my only means of connection with the music world outside my little studio apartment. I started making music when I became disabled as a way of avoiding feeling useless and without purpose. I've now written and published over a hundred songs. And the only pay I get for it? Spotify. I've not gotten to the point where Spotify is paying me about enough to cover the subscriptions I use for my music creation and publishing. Yeah. It ain't much. But it's more income than any other source I have access to. Additionally, it is ONLY because of spotify that I have 10s of thousands of plays on my songs and that thousands of people have heard my music. No other source has been able to do this for me. Now, I'm no tech guru and I'm sure there are things I could be doing to promote better growth, but Spotify's algorithyms have promoted my music better even than I have been able to across all sources. People on spotify hear my music because it's somehow similar to something they like. I have no other way of making that happen. Sure, there are crappy things about dealing with Spotify (and any of the other services) but I'd never be where I am as an artist if I had to rely on labels, radio stations, touring and all the other things I just do not have access to. I am INCREDIBLY grateful to Spotify and am glad they are making the kind of money they are because it motivates them to continue doing what is beneficial to me. I can't get even my family and friends to click a share button (not because they don't care or like my music but because people are just lazy like that) so getting my music in other people's ears would be an impossibilty for me if not for Spotify. Apple, Amazon, Deezer, Pandora, KZbin... none of them have done anything for me whatsoever. I work my ass off makeing my music the best I can to my ability (I can't afford engineers, producers, mixers, mastering, marketing etc) and Spotify is THE ONLY source that has been beneficial in promoting my music. So, yeah.. you got other ideas, I'm game to hear them, but I feel misunderstood when established artists complain about what is my ONLY source of income. Spotify doesn't share me because I'm cool or I know the right people or because I pay them to place my music. They share my music to people who like similar music regardless of what I do or don't do. And that is by far the most honest thing I can think of in the music business. Hell, established artists won't share my music even if they like it for numerious reasons from "well if I shared yours I'd have to share everyones" to fear of promoting someone/something their label/handler/manager/agent thinks is unprofitable. So until people start flooding my Bandcamp or even clicking the share button on my links... Spotify is the best 'connection' I have in the music business.

Ah the music bizz. Tell you you're getting a break, rush out songs they want artistic control say - so on, and you're on the grueling road routine. What does the song writer/musicians get? You get wrung out like a sponge and typically tossed to the scrap heap. Oh how we love it and keep crafting music. Overall even with their warts I'm glad there are platforms for posting/finding/listening to music. Thanks brother, you're appreciated.

I've got you on my playlists Otis! Spotify has its flaws and I would like to transfer my years of Spotify over to Tidal but all my friends and family use Spotify and I frequently share links to artists, songs & albums I've discovered or just playlists I've made. Have a great weekend!

I had a great uncle that was a singing cowboy on his own radio show somewhere in California back in the day. Unfortunately, I have never found any record or mention of it online or discovered any recordings. I guess he was small time, they probably had a few of them in every town back in the early radio days.

Totally get the streaming issues, though I would say I have discovered a huge volume of excellent music that you never get to hear on mainstream. It was a Blues internet station out of Athens Greece that I first heard you. Now I use Tidal and have many of your albums downloaded and I don't think I would have ever discovered your music if it wasn't for this. Sure miss the old days of reading the record cover etc. I'm an Aussie Muso and I love playing and singing your songs, just blew me away when I first heard. Just keep on doing what you do. Any chance you might get to Australia for a tour?

I find Spotify terrible. I didn’t realize how bad the company was until I uploaded my music to Spotify. They don’t pay for fewer than 1000 streams, which means they don’t treat all artists equally. They don’t include artists who don’t have 1000 streams on other artists’ playlists. They don’t care about independent artists. This attitude really infuriates me. This company definitely sucks.

Having played professionally for over 55 years, I’ve lived through the rise and “fall” of the music business. Quiteo a ride. Except for the few superstars, musicians have always had to fend for themselves- record companies famously stiff the smaller artists unless they had a good lawyer. The cash came from gigs. So it goes… Thanks, Otis, for this video- it’s a great service to your fellow pilgrims out there who just want to play and be heard.

Regarding the general topic of musicians getting their share, Mick Jagger had an observation: “There was really only a brief period of time (Classic Rock era) where the artists made real money from recordings. The rest of history musicians have had to make their money by playing live.”

There are people today who believe the only way to be paid for playing music is playing 'live music'. Recorded music is a closed loop. The price of a new automobile today could purchase a home recording studio, but no viable way to be compensated for recordings with the current economic system of music distribution. Imagine today what Woody Guthrie might write and sing about.

Musicians are now more familiar with hardships of being a writer who were promised a brighter light with desktop publishing. Money is being made in publishing and music but little is filtered to the artists who creates it. All artists should be funded as a utility for the well being of us all. One benefit of our new quality audio in our pocket is the ability I had during the pandemic to listen to the full unabridged over 28 hour reading of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake with room left over for all the many gigabytes of my music library. Technology is great, but the sharing and compensation of wealth is yet to reach an equity with technology. Leisure time should be a wealth given to all of us from the profits of modernity and its technology.

I'm with you on the Sirius XM/Outlaw Country sub. I know Spotify we'll play "If you like this, then you'll love this..." type of stuff, but there's something about Outlaw Country being a station with real DJs (you mentioned a couple of my favorites, but really ALL the DJs/shows are great) that works better for me. I can't tell you the amount of new music that I've found on there. Little Steven's other station (The Garage) plays some awesome stuff.

The internet and advent of digital music opened up music and the possibility to get your music heard quickly and by almost any person on earth. Independent artists had at their disposal something even more powerful than any tool the record industry ever had, a direct connection to the listener. It was a strange new frontier for a while and record companies and artists worked together to figure out ways to navigate it and sell music. But then streaming came along and companies much bigger than those record companies, such as Amazon, Apple and Google came along and told the record companies that if they want to continue to exist they will do as they are told. No longer did the record companies focus on working deals with artists, their only concern now was working deals with the streaming services. This is where IMO courts should’ve stepped in and the contracts of artists past and present should’ve been renegotiated and restructured to include a fair royalty rate for streams with an adjusted increase periodically over time. This amazing tool we have now, the internet, and the more convenient, simpler ways we obtain music, are an amazing product of modern technology. That being said, we should not allow that technology to be hijacked by giant internet and music industry corporate conglomerates who abuse the power they have over the most essential component in this whole discussion, the artists…
