I'm from Los Angeles. I'd leave the cuz part out: here it is a gang affiliation. Crips use cuz, bloods use blood, and if the wrong person hears you use a rival affiliation term you could endanger yourself for real.

Thank you man. I'm european and english is not my native language. There was a black guy talked to me in NYC subway and I didnt understand him nor even a word. Then he told to another black guy that he hate white people because white people hate him. I'm white so I was thinking and didnt know if he was talking about it because I was not able to talk with him. I felt sad because it wasnt about his race but the accent he spoke. Thats the reason why I'm here. To understand that man in case I will meet him again. And finally answer him his questions he asked me.

This is terrific. I teach English on Zoom to students in Ukraine and I'm using this as an example of the variety of ways Americans express themselves. My students find it fascinating! One of them, a young woman of 24, told me she grew up listening to Hip Hop and 50Cent was her favorite. She didn't understand a single word of his rap! Today she's an expert English speaker and it was from her early curiosity in Hip Hop that she became interested in American culture. Thank you for the video and keep up the good work!

Rodrigo, you're such a great great teacher. Your way of speaking is just out of this world for a Brazilian guy - I knew you from English in Brazil's podcasts, and I thought Carina had called an American teacher to participate in that channel! LoL I've got one doubt: are those expressions used only by black American people in the places mentioned? Or are they kind of local expressions used by every people from those areas? I mean, would it be very weird if I as a non-black man used those ways of saying hello?

I kiinda agree. If you live among and work with Black people then you want to know how to navigate - not replicate. These videos are excellent for helping people navigate. But advising someone to learn these things outside of being in authentic relationship with Black people/community actually is bad for everyone involved. If they are truly your community, they will teach and correct you with love. If they don’t know you like that, you might lose those relationships, lose business or get into an argument. Side note: is this how our language always gets co-opted? Do people work to get accepted into our community to learn things from us then sell it back to people out side of the community??? 😯

"What's cracking" seems to be related to the Irish "What's the craic?" (the last word is pronounced exactly like "crack," and the phrase means something like "what's new?" or "what's happening?"). Makes sense, given how much influence Scots-Irish English has had on Black American English, itself a result of the close association and intermingling of black slaves and Scots-Irish indentured workers in the very old south, and of the two groups' daily contact in the less-old south.

Uma dica a mais: Ouçam T.I (Atlanta) Snoop Dogg (Long Beach- Cali) e Notorious B.I.G (Brooklyn) & 50 Cent (Southside Jamaica- Queens) Só nesses Rappers aí que citei vocês já terão uma boa base de Black English.
