While I do like GX, I have to agree. I don't remember them, at any point, talking about the genuine charm the writing has, but I do remember one of them mentioning how the overarching story was (don't remember the exact words so I'll just put something that has a similar meaning) unique, when the story is really just the junk food of fantasy plots. My guess is because they grew up with the original Dragon Quest games, they don't have a strong ability to differentiate between what's part of the Dragon Quest name and what's actually good, ex: some bosses suck, but that's a jrpg tradition vs. You can do good things for the world that aren't part of side quests

Druid T I have a habit of not watching reviews, as most of the time, if I know I’ll like a game enough to buy it, then I won’t be too disappointed. So I haven’t watched their review on DQ, despite that being probably the best place for me to look for what I’m complaining about. (Hypocrisy yay). It’s moreso just that they’ve pushed the game so much, which is fine, just tiresome, considering they simply say “people BuY tHiS gAmE!1!”. I’m not gonna say they have a sneaky agenda, simply that they probably love DQ as a whole and want it to be more popular in the West and are pushing their audience in its direction, so to speak, which I don’t like, purely because the market will consume what it wants to. But then if I had a chance to artificially inflate the old Golden sun games’ sales I’d probably take it. ANYWAY, paragraph over, my apologies, to anyone who cares I’m probably popping this game on my Xmas list this year.

I know that literally speaking they don’t mean anything, but when you’re playing as a voiceless hero in a world of VERY expressive supporting actors, being able to just say “yes” to some things instead of watching him nod is a useful way to remind you you’re in control. I do hope however that in the next game the hero is voiced. There was a lovely cast in this one and our silent hero stuck out like a sore thumb. Especially because we hear him speak as a child, for some reason. All in all, I don’t really desire “choices matter” gameplay in DQ games anyway since part of their charm is their linearity.

Yes, having talking hero would be great. It actually can be done without ruining tradition of silent protagonists. In Ys VIII, for example, MC is traditionally silent, but he's voiced in such a way, that you can actually see a character, not a cardboard cutout, like in DQXI.

@@xellis8434 I mean... idk. In Ys VIII it was cool that he could talk but they over did it. During raids he full on talks during "active voice" and has full lines. Everything else was fine but when I see him speak in raids it makes me wonder what the point of making him silent in the first place was. Even the choices you can pick for him throughout the story shows that he has a personality so why didn't they just make him speak like every other character? They should have just kept it to battle quotes and small lines when fishing, calling the village for help, etc. And that's how the next DQ game should do it. Just give him battle quotes and also give some response choices (but refrain from giving those choices too much personality). So basically like Fire Emblem Three Houses.

@@xellis8434 Well.... we've had a talking DQ Hero before and honestly he happened to be my least favorite MC. Ironically, in the title DQ Heroes 2 Lazarael (I didn't play the first one but I wish I had).

@@vDorgengoa Exactly. I think the way Persona 5 and Three Houses handled it was pretty good. Ys VIII's silent protagonist has too much personality that it makes you wonder what the point was of making him silent in first place.

By the end of the game I had a tendency to skip through some dialogues to get to the action, but not once did I skip a Veronica line. Something about her throaty voice actress combined with the tiny, harmless-looking character is just captivating. Sylvando is also a standout, for sure. Love my flamboyant Spanish jester
