My ex had rules for me, he already decided in his head what I would be wearing, from hair to veil to dress to shoes to make up. I asked if he would be wearing something I liked (did not even know what yet, but I thought of a lengthy dark coat, kindof over-the-hip length and some decorative subtle details on the shoulders) but he said he wanted to wear a shirt, jeans and a tophat and run into the altar (not onto...into) on chop suey. My suggestings on veil (double veil, a very-seethrough one in front of my face) and dress and shoes and hair, he felt were stupid and ugly. He also hated the music I picked out and told me not to hold a bouquet. I never married him or even get engaged.

The poor bride's mum spent a lot of time pursing her lips and looking away every time one of the groom's 'rules' was mentioned. I feels she's not happy but is trying to avoid a row because she knows she might not see her daughter again. Even the bride had a sad little moment when the future mother-in-law said "he'd like something a little more form-fitting" but then she said she didn't like the dress. I think she was covering up how she really felt. I've got a bad feeling about this marriage, at least for the girl anyway.

Instead of being ashamed that she raised a controlling piece of garbage for a son, she is proud of it and enforces his toxic “rules”. I highly doubt that a wedding planner wouldn’t want her own wedding! She said HE didn’t want a wedding and hated her showing him dresses, the eloping was his idea which she agreed to because he is emotionally abusive. Her shame is evident when she sees her mother crying. I hope she leaves him and can do so safely.

It seems to me as if his mother approves of his controlling ways as well. She seems happy to chip in with his 'rules' so the bride doesn't dare stray. The girl loved the second dress then was more or less 'told' that she didn't like it after all. Even with the third dress she wasn't happy until she'd made her change something about it that she liked. She turned it into just another plain strapless wedding dress. So much for 'fashion'.

@@MBAinternetmktg It's more complicated than that because of the psychological implications of being enthralled to a narcissistic abuser. You lose your identity and everything becomes about pleasing that person because of how they manipulate and gaslight you. They devalue and chip away at you slowly. It's the analogy of the frog in slowly boiling water. You have no idea it's happening until your in crisis. Everyone around you may see it and try to tell you, but you dont' believe it. The best example today is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. She manipulated him like a pro and his friends and family tried to tell him to slow down, but he refused to see all the red flags and the next thing you know, she played into his paranoia, controlled him, isolated him and separated him from his family.

I’ve been the bride who wanted to buy the dress that would make the groom happy, and I ended up years later looking at my wedding photos feeling unhappy with a lot of things on my wedding day. It also set a precedence for the whole marriage. I wish I had also not forgotten my own happiness, too. Sometimes, lessons are learned the hard way. I try to pass on that wisdom when I get the chance so other brides don’t make the same mistake.

I get that, honey. I married the man I THOUGHT I loved because I wanted to please my daddy and because I was pregnant. I was literally crying while walking done the aisle. My Daddy said "you don't have to do this if you really don't want to." But I stuck to it just for my Daddy. Since it was a quickie wedding, we hadn't spent a lot of money, but I didn't want Daddy to pay for all of it for nothing. I think the total cost was about $1,500, and even that small amount was over their budget. We made our party favors, which were tiny bottles of soap bubbles with a small wand and birdseed as the "rice," my cake, his cake and all the snacks for the guests. A lot of people from my church were there (about 100). My dress was a style that was popular at the time (1974), the dress itself was a maxi-dress with burgundy as the main background and a pretty beige flower print all over it. It also had some thin lace on the sleeves, and a sweetheart neckline. My veil was a very pretty lace shawl that I pinned to my hair. Unfortunately, my husband threw out all of the wedding pictures in a rage and he burned them. That's how he reacted to get his own way in insignificant arguments. I had one more child 4 years later. The last straw was when he threw out all the cloths that I had saved from my first child, and were being passed down to my younger baby, I filed for divorce and he continued his affair with a married woman at the place where he worked. He had been cheating with her for over 3 years, and she was almost 10 years older than he was.

After 6 months of assisting parents in 2021 to 2022, they were abusing my kind nature, having moved 2 hours away from my husband, our animals, our home and stopped attending interviews, I went to help them and it was complex in what I did and achieved. What is the point of buying a big expensive wedding dress if no one is going to be there to share your day. Did no one in the family see all the red flags that show that she is entering into a controlling relationship, if he is denying your family the chance to be with you on such an important day of your life, he will start to alienate her from all her friends and family.

Exactly. Me and my husband didn't want a big, grand wedding either, so we decided to get married in a beautiful tropical garden in Hawaii, 1,000 miles from where we live in the UK - but we saved the money that would've gone on the reception venue and other fancy bells and whistles for a more 'public' wedding, and spent that instead on paying for all of our immediate family to come out to Hawaii with us. It was wins all round - we got the no-fuss, private wedding we wanted, and our family got to be there too AND have a great mini-holiday out in Hawaii.
