I hope when people keep saying that Justin is the Creative Director realize that he isn't the DIRECTOR. Justin just came up with the concepts -- that's what Creative Director means.

I think people get confused about this esp when they don't know how a music video is produced. Usually, an artist and their record company will send out a song to production companies and those production companies will submit a "treatment" or written pitch outlining the vision of their respective in-house directors for that song. The artist, their agency and the record label will look thru these and choose a pitch that comes close to what their aiming for. And then, the whole production team is assembled. In this case, Chapters PH is at the helm. I didn't see any particular director's name in the credits so I'm assuming the company acts as one entity, meaning there's no star director above the rest of the crew. The creative director's job is to make sure the look and concept that SB19 wants is translated uniformly and across the board in the MV production, the marketing of the MV in all platforms down to the graphic design for their merchandising. But I'm sure Justin helped with storyboarding the scenes in some capacity because their group is known to be hands on in every creative aspect of their MVs and performances.

@@2G_igurl Justin did storyboarding. He said so in his recent menpa. Somebody asked him when they started conceptualizing for What?. This was his answer: "[#SB19_JUSTIN] yung pinaka una and rough na storyboard ko is August pa" I assume the scenes are mostly Justin's or the boys' ideas coz they seem to always have a vision and clear idea of what they want. & this MV, especially the numerous & changing scenes is very akin to the animated Hanggang sa Huli MV which were completely SB19's ideas, from story concept down to the storyboarding to directing; the boys did say they made the story concept for HSH while in their hotel room after an event performance somewhere out of town. So you can really see how tatak SB19 the What? MV is.

@@user-cj6jd3xx9l Yes, I've read that tweet in his menpa, too. But I just assumed that he did some storyboarding for this MV since he did the storyboarding for HSH. But it's nice to have that confirmation in his tweet. He doesn't talk much of his creative process, maybe because this is a collaborative work, meaning they all had inputs on the concept and about what should and shouldn't go into the MV. As a creative ditector, his task was to unify those different inputs to make them into a cohesive whole that the production crew can translate visually into an MV. And the finished product would be something all of them had agreed on. Also, they've already proven more than once that they are very hands on in all the creative aspects of their music, MVs and performances.

Ken’s sitting on a throne may remind us of G Dragon but look closely, and connect it with Ken’s lyrics. He’s talking about wearing his garbage as part of being true to one’s self and with that garbage, you can actually create a throne using scrap metal and junk meaning make something good out of all the bad experiences you’ve had in your life. Similar look but entirely different context. By the way, G Dragon is my first Kpop idol. I’m waiting for a CB. 😀

I think the outfit during chorus was sort of like in the battle of survival (pertaining as showcasing their talents in the world of music industry) that's why in the next scene they wearing some general outfits means you gain some achievement, promote in a higher ranks (billboard was one of their major achievements, and SB19 is now stepping in their game by level up) so many meaning story on that music video..

A'tin Theory (Hidden meaning of the lyrics) What❓ is based on their journey to world domination. Pablo- they started it, but they won't finish it. But that doesn't mean they'll stop. They'll continue striving beyond anyone's goals/expectations Ken- they'll keep carrying their garbage(flaws) with them and that will keep their feet grounded. Justin- when they first started, all opportunities were shut for them, but it's starting to open now, one by one. Stell- they've been through rough times, but they're still going. Same reaction here as you have. Watching it a lot of times makes you feel a sense of pride...from whatever, and wherever you are. Its an uplifting song too. Its message of Love and Empowerment kinda rubs on you. A lot of symbolisms here tho: Pablo (cut out newsprints) resembles media; Ken (Garbage made up his throne); Justin (the Universe); Stell (farmland or field, seeds); Josh (the Iron Maden). And the highlight...the Flag (What-a-wat or watawat) representing yourself and how you don't need to go to 'battles' or create conflict, instead embrace those people that puts you done and be empowered to rise above it. Timestamps are based on the Official MV :) A lot of these parts come really fast in the video though. 0:49 = “Ang Isang Daang Karera” = **update/edited** There are several possible translations & meanings 1) “One Hundred Careers”, 2) “One Career Path”, 3) “Race to A Hundred”, or 4) “A Race” (note: “Daan” can mean either “hundred” or “way/path/road” and “Karera” can mean “career” or “race” ) Fans are still coming up w/ theories even after the MV’s release. For instance, it could also mean their race to Billboard 100. Please do check fan comments below! :) The group has not confirmed anything yet. 0:49= “Hinubog ng Pagsubok” = “Shaped by Challenges”. Thank so much for reacting💙. For us this song really hits different it's EPIC. It's not just the music and beat is powerful but the LYRICS it's really deep full of empowerment . WHAT ? rhymes with "WATAWAT" in english means FLAG. As you can see Philippine flag is not used for entertainment purposes , the reason why flag has question mark because all of us has different flags it's up to you what kind of flag you want to raise. Example if you belong to LGBTQ be proud of it. Just raise your flag. If you're bullied stand up don't let anyone bully you, raise your flag . Flag can be a representation of courage and not being afraid. The song is lyric wise about loving and believing yourself and empowerment . The song tells that no matter how hard to pursue or continue your dreams or goals or what you want to overcome in life never stop. Don't let anyone stop you to move forward and fight. The song and the lyrics is really deep it can be interpreted in many ways. For SB19, as an artist it's not that easy to create music because some people hate or bash or not accept them. They represented their selves as soldiers and the enemies are the ones who hate them. it's a battle for them to continue their passion in music and those people with white shirts keeps on bumping them represents obstacles that no matter how many comes their way they will move forward and do their music to represent our country and raise our flag. No one can stop them achieving their goals. For me the last part is they're celebrating together with the people who hate them before. That's what they want to tell that everybody will accept them and be proud of them. And together celebrate as Filipino in the Philippines in promoting our music to the world.
