To all of those that have negative comments how the job is done have never done the job. Everything is done to the safest way possible for the firefighters. Yes there are many vids out there that show unsafe things being done but everyone is quick to Judge everything they see but a lot comes out of them videos and that is training takeaways things we can learn from to do the job better and safer on the next run. So for those of you that think they know the job and can’t learn from anything it’s time to hang it up one thing I always say the day you think you know it all it time to end the career b4 you get yourself or someone else hurt or killed.

SBFD always hustle s on incidents, very, very, professional! The ladder used to get to the roof was short and could of effected their safety. Min. Of 3 rungs above roof line. Outstanding efforts none the less.

Replying to comments. Here are things to be aware of. The ‘apartment/residential’ designation vs ‘commercial’ is an indication of the size of the building. Therefor it gets 2 trucks, 4 or 5 engines, medic squad and a BC. On a confirmed working fire in a commercial occupancy, a second alarm is requested to get them enroute to the fire in have backup for the first alarm or assist of the fire gets bigger faster than the initial can handle. They can always be canceled. Matter of fact, I was on a second alarm fire at that same building 15+ years ago. And it one I remember well. The first unit on scene had a lot of fire in the upstairs units. AND a citizen handed the Capt 2 limp babies as he’s giving his size up. The other engines companies that are normally assigned to the address were at a training at HQ. My ME and MS were second on scene from roughly 5 miles away.(8 minutes dodging traffic) if all units are in position and available, my station is not on the first alarm for this location. It went to second alarm status right now because No One was fighting fire. It was all about patient care. And this was during the height of staffing at SBCityFD. 12 stations open. 12 ME, 2 MT, 1 MS. 55 personnel per shift. Most units had 4/0 staffing. During the bankruptcy of the city, staffing got reduced to 36 per shift and 10 stations. 3/0 staffing at all units. In 1999 and 2000, 11 Pierce Dash rigs were put into service. Jump seat FF’s had SCBA harnesses in the seat. Ready to go into action as you arrived. If I was first on scene of a confirmed working fire and not catching the hydrant, I did have my mask on (not clicked in) One less thing to fumble around with at the door when stuff is happening. I spent the majority of my Ff career in SBCityFD.

I don't know why you'd put a second alarm on a fire like that, 1st alarm companies should be able to handle that (and they did) quite easily. There was ZERO reason to vent that roof. No smoke at all out the vents, and very little fire damage on the second floor. Don't be a robot... THINK.

Its very common to have additional alarms and stand them down especially for buildings with large occupancy, if it turned into a fatal fire or lodd the first things they would look at is why a second alarm wasn't called. Imo its better to have additional resources rolling and stand them down then need them and not have them rolling.
@ffjsb
@ffjsb 2 жыл бұрын
@@engineco.1494 You should have the appropriate resources on the first alarm to begin with. This isn't like it's some rural town with the next engine 20 miles away...

@ritirons2726
@ritirons2726 2 жыл бұрын
It’s rarely done in my area either. It’s exactly the opposite, a big no no to take a hand line to the roof. It’s not necessary, the line can be used or may be needed elsewhere on the fire ground, it ties up manpower, and if it’s stretched from the initial attack engine, it gives the pump operator another line to worry about. I know it can be argued that it’s for the safety of the members, but if conditions change that rapidly or if conditions necessitate a hand line, the members need to abandon the task and get down ASAP or they should not have gone to the roof in the first place.

Who brings a handline onto the roof when venting?? 🤔 There's no need to fight the fire from the roof down into the units. The crews in the units should be handling that.

Why don't they have the air tanks on before they get to the fire. I though they could get dressed in the truck. It's like they want to give the fire a chance. Also if the window opens why break it. Car fire's they need to use the hood latch. Senseless Destruction of personal property. It's bad enough the damage from the fire. Cowboy.
@bobsmithinson2050
@bobsmithinson2050 2 жыл бұрын
They don’t use the hood latch at all on car fires because of the danger (Audi Ming it’s just the engine on fire) They just cut a huge “A” shape over the latch and open the hood.

Many departments have removed the breathing apparatus from inside the cab to an outside compartment because they claim that the carcinogens on the SCBA can cause cancer to the crews riding in the truck.

Having watched hundreds FF videos from the US and EU, the approaches are very different. In the EU, tanks are in the rigs ready, just need to strap. Most rigs in EU will directly attack fire from outside with onboard tanks. I do see a lot of planning, talking and assessing in the US. Not so sure if as efficient vs the EU

@@bobsmithinson2050 that is ok if they just f. Up the hood. But a lot. Of times some cowboy comes over with a diging bar and an hour later he destroys the whole front end and finally gets the hood open. When he could have pulled the hood latch. Unless the car is fire one end to the other. At that point . It's to late. Game over.

In my department we had 30 seconds to respond in daytime ( in station) once on scene out of the truck w/ tank, mask, helmet, gloves on ready to enter: 1 minute or less to have water at nozzle. Standards are 4 firefighters on scene before entry but that never happened. Enter in the direction to push fire away from unburnt areas if possible. For some reason in Europe they attack from outside windows to push the smoke and fire into other areas of the fire floor( not too smart) until it's knocked down ( that's very bad tactics)In firefighting you have to make an aggressive attack on a fire, my department was very aggressive at that. In some advanced apartment fires when mutual aid departments called a defensive fire attack we would go in and put the fire out when they were going to attack from outside. Steel construction is different you look for walls bowing out in advanced fires! Windows never broken unless in fire room to vent. Other windows opened to vent room to room with positive pressure ventilation. And not sure about the firefighter climbing the ladder in the courtyard one rung at a time, if your scared to clime a ladder go make pizzas for a living ( you shouldn't be a firefighter) your just a danger to other firefighters!!! Plus ground ladder ops! A roof ladder to ladder a building. If your operating an roof operation at all you have a extension ladder at least 4 rungs above the roof line in at least two areas for quick evaluation if needed. I don't mean to complain about other departments tactics but if your a firefighter do your job correctly and do your job well and be confident in that job! If your not in an aggressive fire department find one, your safer to do so.

You should be chief of the fire world. You summarized all the points I frequently make, those points that get cut down by all the defensive firefighters out there - those who don't want to change. They take NO constructive criticism. Like, gearing up on the way to a fire, I was told that it is unsafe to do so. Imagine?

Couple issues with your essay length answer there buddy: 1. ‘Pushing’ smoke and fire into other areas of a structure is perfectly avoidable if done correctly. The FDNY in conjunction with IFSTA undertook a series of experiments that showed that water applied properly from outside can reset a fully involved compartment to pre-flashover temperatures, thus making those survivable spaces within the structure more survivable by reducing temps considerably. 2. Claiming European firefighters automatically go defensive is dumb in the extreme. Building construction methods are entirely different from those commonly seen here in North America, which dictates different tactics and strategies. Often a high pressure booster line is utilized until a hydrant water supply is established. There’s a reason fire deaths here in NA are far higher than those in Europe. 3. The FF climbing the ladder one rung at a time is carrying a chainsaw and a pike pole, I defy any firefighter, (and yes that includes you) to climb a ladder quicker without being able to hold on with either hand. Here’s some advice for ya, sometimes it’s better to say nothing and be thought a fool, than speak and remove all doubt.

Not to judge what u say but some of that is wrong first what makes a firefighter a good firefighter don’t judge and put depts down don’t pick out what u think they are doing wrong look at every video as a training guide what we can take away and learn from and u say u go on mutual aid call and when they call a defense attack u go in well that’s being a cowboy dept and disobeying orders and by doing that u can get yourself or someone else hurt or killed remember there is ONE person in charge the OIC and no matter what you think or how you feel at the end of the day it’s his/her call and right or wrong u respect that decision
