Alright, here's a good one: I was a massive edgelord when I was in middle school-high school. I'm talking full on Linkin Park-blasting , spiky bracelet, Jinco-jeans wearin edge. My gf back then was also super edgy, and one day, we wanted to go to a concert and she tried to convince me of straightening out my hair and getting my nails and eyes painted black by her. It was my first gf , I was too eager to please her, so I let her. She was so excited about this, she said she'd do this to me everyday for as long as we were together. Mere seconds before we leave (this was done at my house) , my mom looks at me and says "You smell horrible! You didn't shower! You're not leaving til you take a bath" . I go into the bathroom, and looked at myself in the mirror. I hadn't really looked at myself , as I was too excited with the whole ordeal. And then it hit me. I saw all the shit I had on, my already-straight-straightened out hair and I thought that , maybe, _just maybe_ , this wasn't a good look for me. I decided to tell the gf I had something else I had to do. She didn't care all that much about me (and that's a different story altogether) ,so she left and I stayed home to remove all the shit she had put on me. Only later, almost 6 years after it happened, I realized the bullet I had dodged. All the cringe comps I didn't appear in. All the Coldsteels I didn't make. My mom saw into the future and wouldn't you know it, the world DIDN'T refuse to change.

i tried to bring a bionicle to high school. mom said that i could loose it. that day a kid got his ass KICKED for bringing one to school. thank fuck i brought my DS instead and was left alone.

Weird, when I was in first grade I was kind of an outcast, but I noticed the other boys in the class were into Bionicle, so I got some Bionicle one day and brought it to school and suddenly I was a cool guy.

Back in highschool there was this one girl who unironically wore a Naruto headband. I only shared one class with her, but never noticed her being bullied. Now, this doesn't mean it never happened, but she reliably wore it every day. She was cute, though, so I'd say that's a free pass to do weeby stuff like that. Either that, or everyone else saw she was a foot shorter than anyone else and decided "Nah, she gets picked on enough." I guess the moral of my story is, if you're cute you can get away with cringe.

yeah i like the message here but at the same time it's so oppressive when you put it that way. basically it's ok to be cringe as an adult and you're embracing the cringe, but as a kid the cringe is something you're to naive and weak to understand. just look at 100 gecs, that's how you EMBRACE the cringe and use it for power.

I am so glad I never went for the cringey nerd clothes, then again I always went to places with a dress code so I couldn't even if I wanted to. Closest to identifying as a nerd is t-shirts at work, thankfully nobody cares.
