the amount of people who didn't know how to use the storm ruler at the beginning is really high. I have seen a lot of Lets plays from people who played the game when it came out, that had the same problem. I have also seen quite a lot of streamers who didn't know how to use the weapon in their blind playthrough. Thats probably the reason the Spear in Elden Ring has just powered up attacks in the Rykard fight, no matter what you do. Too much confusion about how to properly use the weapon, so just make it easier to use.

@Pancakes Supreme I don't really think the grinding was the only problem. I remember before the grind, there seemed to be a lot of interesting possibilities for weapons and builds. Then post grind, we find Pat wearing incredible armor and using one of the mose effective, but boring, weapons in the base game. Woolie kinda said it best when he made that joke about "auto pilot engaged". That segment was real boring to watch for me. No matter how good or bad it really was though, you're right. It wasn't as big a deal as some folks made it out to be.
