"What if we're some kind of gun tree?" is a mantra I wish I could aspire to.

You made the right call to rapidly advance quills. Besides giving you extra points now, rapid advancement will let you raise that mutation above 10, which is the limit you can do with just mutation points. Since quills is your body slot you're going to want to get that AV up. (BTW I can tell you where to find the girshling corpse if you want. You're close.)

Photosynthetic skin is really neat. The extra quickness is very good and the starch can be used to add quickness to food. Honestly super fun speed build with gunslinger, I did really well with a similar build

I've been quite demotivated in the earlier versions because dying is so easy in the beginning. On death, you have to create a character again, go through the slog of same-ish earlier stages and then also die very quickly for a random reason. After the addition of Roleplay mode, I can actually meaningfully progress the storyline and learn new, more advanced things. Just in case you get tired of the death loop :)

My problem with Roleplay mode is you ultimately end up seeing/experiencing less of the game. You make mistakes and essentially have to "rewind" a bit, but it doesn't require you to rethink the grander strategy so much as the one screen you died on. You end up taking a fairly linear path through the game, instead of branching out. If all you want from a traditional roguelike is to see the story then you're kind of in the wrong genre. The story is good, but the action is where the game shines, and it shines because there are thousands of different permutations of any one event, something you miss out on when you're not constantly starting over in order to witness them. Creating characters, trying the same missions/events in new ways and dying for random reasons is precisely what people love about games like this.

As someone who’s never played a game like this before and is simply trying to understand what it even is and how to navigate it, roleplay mode is extremely helpful. I will absolutely go back and play classic once I feel like I have my bearings

For anyone who does this, please make a rule for yourself (and feel free to do this, I'm not gonna gatekeep hardcore mode): Ban yourself from re-entering the area you died in, at least in an immediate sense. The game becomes A LOT LESS FUN if you're just dying, respawning, and going to try to brute force your way through an area you clearly aren't prepared for. Make yourself go to an easier area, grind a bit, farm up some dosh, get better equipment, and then come back. If you find there's nothing you can do to progress, feel free to retire your character and try again. You can brick your saves, like with bad diseases or infections that you save with - but don't slam your face into walls repeatedly.

@@kwahn106 I hate repetition and after dying I normally go in another direction to see what's gonna happen

@@Squant Well I experience more of the game simply because I can learn from my mistakes and my whole progress doesn't get dumped. I don't mind roguelikes where you invest less effort and shoot / slash things, but here - no, I am absolutely not resetting to zero

For my first character I had exactly the same idea of many-armed bandit (lol) and was very disappointed it didn't work although even with 2 hands and akimbo you run through ammo VERY quickly

Yeah it sounds better as melee with multi limb mutation. Just barrage enemy with melee hits.

true kins are the ones to go with if you want to shoot four guns at the same time, they have an implant for that. (and an implant to wield 2-handed weapons in a single slot)

you can get lucky and find 1000+ bullets from traders early on. i've only had 10 runs and none of them dedicated gunners so i never tried to do it intentionally / reliably.
