Why dahling, although dear Nigey Marsh may have hammed up his role on the night, I felt my own performance was a veritable tour-de-force. One simply oozed the character of electrician-with-crowbar-up-his-tradesman. The raw emotion. The clever mannerisms. The ironwork crammed right up the exhaust. One simply cannot understand why we got a Roger Ebert thumbs down, only two out of ten on IMDB and the review in the times calling us "a right pair of wankers".

Totally agree with you regarding the boards and brands. As you say look how many are obsolete ect and finding it hard to come by. Also totally agree with the Hager comment, absolutely love Hager & the boards and the accessories etc, the only issue as you say is price vs CP Fusebox. Often found now if it’s a dual RCD board then Hager goes in, but if it’s RCBO (preferred) with SPD, Fusebox wins. Hager grommet strip is absolutely gash never used it now. Oddly the stuff CP give with their boards is really good.

A genuine view of an electrician day, talking absolute rubbish on the way to the job in a knackered'ish van, it took me all day to fit the board and my knees are creaking, and no I'm not numbering them up or dressing the cables for Instagram. It is sunny outside so lets do inside work, my tools are everywhere so packing up going to take a hour, at the end of the day the thoughts always turn to when can I retire or work for western power fitting £50 two pole isolators for £250. That cheared me up for half an hour, thanks Dave and Nige.

It's funny watching UK sparkies marvel at stuff we've been using on this side of the pond for ages. In these parts we call that bus arrangement _plug-on netutral_ and it's been standard on essentially every new panel for years. All the major manufacturers have their own systems and there's no fear that any will be obsoleted.

We dabbled with SBS via talk electrician forums around 2010. The only downside we found was the availability of additional devices. 1 example is a job that had a SBS board fitted by another company, we needed an RCBO and they couldn’t supply for a week as they were on holiday Wylex devices for balcony busbars are still widely available chief
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 3 жыл бұрын
I believe SBS are under new management now, but I don't know how big they are. When you're a single source of supply, the business does depend on being able to supply the goods when needed! You're right about the Wylex availability. With them, it's a case of knowing which model number to order as sods law will have you turning up with an NHXL device when an NHX is needed.

@@zlmdragon. I take pride in exercising my right to use the free market to select the best equipment for the job. It also happens to restrict what electrically unskilled third-parties such as kitchen fitters, handymen and DIY'ers can do to bastardise it post installation, and it limits what my competitors can later offer which is good for my business. I've never heard of SBS, but since circuit breakers in the Netherlands are always double pole, MCB or RCBO, the dual busbar is very common. And handy it is too. We also have a three-phase version carrying all three phases and neutral, sequencing between the phases for each breaker. Single module RCBO's are becoming more and more popular, however most are still double width. GE, Siemens, ABB, ETI and a few no-name brands do carry 'em. Since Hager has single module RCBO's in the UK (with the neutral tail) I do expect them to land over here some day, with the double-busbar connection on both sides. Interesting how they still install a Neutral bar in the top, even though you don't really need one.
@dsesuk

Very interesting. I wonder why it's so uncommon here. As usual, it seems we have our entrenched ways of doing things even when better ideas come along and are adopted elsewhere.

When I worked in Rotterdam I thought the Dutch systems where miles behind us there conduit is shit 2mm plastic they don't use bends the cable is exposed on 90 bends all the fuse boards had screwing fuses, no such things as fused spurs that was an office don't know if domestic is better a standard this was in 2002 I did like the way they fit sockets and switches they have round back boxes hole cutters no padsaw👍

There's also a four pole version available by different manufacturers for three-phase supplies, the single phase RCBOs are then distributed evenly on the three phases: L1, N, L2, N, L3, N, L1, N and so on. RCDs and RCBOs switching the L and N is also common here in Germany, MCBs only switch the line and not the neutral. Three-phase is common here, even in domestic dwellings. Usually a single family home's service entry fuses are 3x63A here.
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 3 жыл бұрын
@@kimmason9935 The conduit is only there to guide the cable, not for mechanical protection, it's not necessary because the NYM cable is robust enough. The cable can also be clipped to the wall without the conduit. BTW: We also do that in Germany. The bends are only necessary if you use single insulated cable types like H07V-U (formerly known as NYA). Fused spurs are not necessary in radiant circuits which are properly fused in the board. You only require a fuse in between if you reduce the cable size and the smaller cable is not rated for the fuse/MCB rating of the circuit the spur originates from. Screwing fuses are usually only in use to fuse a sub-board somewhere. Usually Neozed D02 fuses, they got the same characteristic as the fuses you use in the UK (gG, general purpose fuse). This is to maintain selectivity, the MCB in the sub-board should trip before the fuse of the supply blows. The cheapest way to achieve this is by implementing a fuse instead of an MCB. BTW: These fuses were far ahead their time back then, the Diazed system was introduce in 1909, the Neozed was an improved version introduced in the 1960s. They have fitting elements inside to prevent the user from inserting a fuse with a too high rating. Electricians can change them, this requires a special tool. They also have also an indicator which pops out if the fuse is blown. The indicator is coloured, the colour indicates the rating of the fuse. In the cap is a small window, with this you can check the rating of the fuse and if it's blown or not without removing the fuse. The colours for the fuses originated from the Germania series postage stamps. Diazed and Neozed are trademarks of Siemens, their official names are D-type or D0 (zero). The screw cap version is the oldest and cheapest fuse carrierer, you can also get a more modern fused isolator switch. It uses the same fuse cartridges. www.amazon.de/Mersen-Lasttrennschalter-05863-063100-D0-Sicherungslasttrennschalter-3605340495904/dp/B003Z7O0WO/ref=sr_1_57?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=neozed+lasttrennschalter&qid=1622908051&sr=8-57 You can also get this as a single phase version, with or without isolating the neutral. Hager L75M for example: www.hager.de/hauptschaltgeraete/sicherungsmaterial/d0-schaltersicherungseinheit/l75m/1004896.htm The neutral is only switched, not fused! Only the lines are fused. If you open the lid the circuit is isolated, then you can remove the fuse. And about beeing far behind: The VDE banned the new installation of type AC RCDs already in 1983 with a transition period until 1984 here in Germany. Standard since then is the type A. Never seen a type AC RCD here in an installation. Push in connections for outlets and switches, and you should also check out Hager Quick Connect. So much for far behind...😉

@@kimmason9935 Screw-in fuses are generally only found in older buildings, or for applications where high inrush-currents are to be expected. Also, main fuses in Dutch homes are generally D02 or D03 Diazed fuses. Sometimes they also use 15kA capable single-pole MCB's, one per phase. An other popular fuse is the NH-fuse (blade fuse, "mespatroon"), from 10A up to 630A, generally used in main distribution boards in large buildings, since their breaking capacity is way higher than a regular breaker. Or in larger distribution boards as "pre-protection", to be able to use standard breakers where the short-circuit current might otherwise be too high. As for the conduit, 2mm sidewall is normal, so it's easy to bend. There's diffrent types of concuit for every application, (PVC, VSV, halogeen free) and it's permitted to leave the corners open, since the cable (YmVK or YmZ1K) offers enough mechanical protection. I tend to bend the corners, since it looks much neater. For other applications, like fire alarm systems (high integrity), you will have to bend all corners or use flexicon, as added protection. Houses are generally wired in singles (H07V-U) in conduit, and that means that you can't leave any open corners since the singles don't offer two layers of insulation. It also allows the singles to be pulled from box to box to device. A typical dutch house has a single-phase 35 amp fuse or 40 amp breaker, or a 3-phase 25 amp supply. Electric showers aren't a thing here, since most houses have a gas combination boiler or an immersion heater tank (which we simply call electric boiler). Also heat-pumps are rising in popularity. A higher intake fuse rating might be needed for EV chargers or other high-current applications, but that also gets very expensive because the delivery charge "vastrecht" skyrockets when the capacity increases. A general circuit is wired in 2,5mm2 cable and protected by a B16 breaker. All circuits are radials, usually with a junction box in the ceiling in the center of each room (centraaldoossysteem), to which the light fitting is usually mounted. A circuit per floor or "front of house/back of house" is pretty typical. High-draw appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, ovens etc get their own circuit. Generally they aren't hardwired, but plugged in to a dedicated single socket, which also is the point of isolation. Fused spurs aren't a thing here, most appliances have intake fuses, and a short-circuit in the supply cable usually causes a current high enough to trip the breaker in a timely fashion. 16 amps is the standard rating of our household outlets and plugs.

Sure is nice not to have neutral tails cluttering the place up! I think with the Eaton stuff they got their pants pulled down by a partner or a patent or something. I spoke to them about it years ago, and I'm sure I was told it was too costly to licence that line, so they had to switch to a new design which wasn't compatible. The high price of RCBO pods for the old line isn't all going to them, someone else is taking a cut which is why they pulled the plug. I can't confirm that's true, just what I was told.

The main problem IMHO with the CE mark is that its the manufacturer self certifying compliance with the regs. So the mark itself is genuine, but there is no guarantee at all that the applier of the mark did any tests to confirm compliance
@dsesuk

It does seem like it's past the point where it no longer has any credible meaning. Maybe the whole UKCA thing will be a good thing, at least for a while, if CE has become too forged to trust.

@@dsesuk looks like the UKCA thing is much the same for many product types, like CE marking you are supposed to declare conformity (keeping records as to why you think you comply) apply the mark and keep records for 10 years. Now if your say Sony that’s no problem if your selling generic phone chargers down the market, working out who made the declaration wil be nigh on impossible. What we really need is a mark with product Id number checkable say on an app by anyone(enter I’d gives you maker, product description, photo and confirmation design has been independently tested). Although if you do that there won’t be many brands willing to jump through those hoops for our market size

I am told that Consumer Units/Boards with double busbars are common in foreign parts, e.g. Europe, where TT systems are more common and are also used in things like camper vans where phase/neutral reversal could be more common. IMO made a wide range of compact RCBOs with "two in/two out" connections for use with double busbar systems. I have used them for mains wiring in camber vans where you cannot rely on polarity on camp sites.

What a good idea having a neutral bus bar, so much neater for fitting RCBO's and that CU looks like it's designed for a TT system where it's essential to have RCD's or RCBO's on every circuit 'cos then they don't give you an earth and you have to provide your own with a rod or a buried mesh. That must be a bit dangerous when you're high up in the hills with a really low water table and therefore really dry soil, especially during a frying hot drought. Much neater and more practical than a split load one where there's only one RCD and if it trips it takes out several circuits at once.

There's no point trying to compete on price which is why we perhaps change out so few consumer units per annum. We do it our way - SPDs, Type-A RCBOs, an EICR upfront and no half measures. If someone wants to pay less for a dual-RCD unit from a DIY store installed by a bloke who hasn't tested anything and intends to get whatever factory-fitted devices in place whether they're right for the job or not, well that's their lookout. A lot of my work comes from people paying me to put right someone else's wrongs.
