Those tinlets have been in use since the early 1950s. I've been using them since the late 1960s when I was a very young chap. I really like them as they seal up nicely after use and I've never chewed a lid up yet.

@barbatos rex: I use these Revell colors since 30 years here in Germany and I have a good workaround for you. Go with the flat screwdriver around the cover, not only try to open it at one side. Then it opens easily. When closing, I always use a hammer or the flat side of a spanner to make the cover even again. With this methode the cans last for years. Please try this. By the way, your videos are excellent. Thumbs up

I just bought a 36 pack of 1/2 oz. jars of eBay too. And Wow! I’m impressed with how those spray. These may be my new go to enamels.

Humbrol DOES NOT produce paint for Revell. Hell, Humbrol doesn't produce their own paint any longer, as they closed their Humberside factory more than twenty years ago and outsourced production (disastrously) to a manufacturer in the PRC. Parent company Hornby Hobbies repatriated Humbrol enamel production to the UK around 2013, and it's (reportedly) now made for them by Rustins - a major UK paint manufacturer. From some slight differences in detail I believe that Revell uses a different supplier for the tinlets as well. There are several European enamel paint brands that have used similar containers in the past (Gloy, Precision, Compucolour, Compucolor/DBI, Xtracolour, Molak, WEM/Sovereign Hobbies, Phoenix Precision, Airfix) or still do, but there are small variances in their shape and specs. The tinlets have been a long-running gripe with Humbrol, Revell and others, but to be fair they do a better-than-average job of sealing the paint can for long-term storage and use compared to most bottles. After more than forty years, I suppose I've just gotten used to them. I do find the Revell tinlets a little more tedious than Humbrol's, as the Revell lids are more deeply recessed in the mouth of the can making it a little more difficult to insert a screwdriver and gain a purchase under the edge of the lid. The Revell lids also seem to have some kind of white poly or plastic coating on their underside which scrapes or pulls off when resealing the lids. That aside, I do like the paints. The enamels brush out easily and cover well and smoothly if properly mixed. The acrylics vary wildly in consistency but can easily be thinned with water, alcohol or the "Aqua Color Mix" for brushing or airbrushing. Great review - please keep up the good work (but however do you find the time for modelling?).

Very nicely detailed run-down of both brands there. I've grown up using Revell email color, and I have always loved that quality, (which has gotten better), but seriously, what Gobshite designed those tiny cans? If it's a "traditional" thing, I think it is high time they let practicality supercede that.

I agree with this. If you know how to open these cans, they're perfect. I've been painting with Revell for well over 25 years now. Every single can I bought as a kid is still good to paint with, these cans are perfect for storing paint. What I usually do is use a some tweezers and gently try and lift the lid, then go around the lid, trying to lift it every few milimeters. Usually cans open before you've done a complete round. Cans that are brand new or haven't been opened for 10 years may take you like 30 seconds. And because you've opened them with tweezers, you have a handle for the lid = no mess. So, DO NOT replace the cans with cheap bottles please :)

I've been using both Humbrol & Revell paint tinlets ever since my first Airfix kit in 1968 and I've never had any problems getting the lids off. Try using a small flat ended screwdriver and work your way around the lid gently and you won't have any problems with them. Don't pour the paint out use a pippet and clean around the inside of the jar when you put the lid back on and you get a nice seal every time. I've had some of my tins for over 20 years and they haven't gone dry.

To remove the lids, use a paint can key you get for free when you but a can of house paint. Should be able to put under the lid and flick it off without bending the lid out of shape. If key is too thick, just file down to a size that works. Give it a try.

I've used the Revell/Humbrol paint off and on for 30 years and have never had that issue. I've had paint make the lids hard to close and have spilt paint due to the lid and pot coming away in a rush but never the issue with bending the lid. Try a thin paint stirrer of a paint opener rather than the screwdriver. Problem I always had was getting the paint out and the smell the latter being the reason why I finally ditched them in favour of acrylics. I bought some recently when Tamiya paint was hard to find and I'm going to decant what I have into old Tamiya/Gunze jars. Another great video, thanks again.

To open metal paint tins you need a flat piece of metal to fit in the groove and then lift up..i use a old metal fabric thread picker..or angled metal tweezers do the trick too..you lift up the lid a bit at a time around the lid..to bend the metal tops back to shape put the top bottom down on a flat surface...place a piece of wood on top and gently use a hammer to bend it back to shape..don't use a wooden stirrer with them as the metal side of the tin will cut into it and yuu will end up with bits of wood in your paint..use a plastic one or a metal paint stirrer like the Tamiya one

I use used scalpel blades to open these tin cans. I use the rectangular end of the blades, that usually disappears in the handle. It's like a very wide und thin flat screwdriver blade. That way you can lift the lids without damaging them. If they are bent, they won't close airtight again and shelf life goes down to months, instead of years. A ball bearing (about 5mm - like those that come in Tipp-Ex flasks or rattle cans) can be used to shake up the thick Revell paints.

Yes, of course a small screw driver carefully around under the lid and the lid will not bend like above. May take a slight wave deform. Replacing lid by carefully placing a small square of timber ( just larger than the tin diameter) on top and pushing home, no probs. As an apprentice signwriter...open a can lid of paint like above...would have had my ass kicked! Before opening, Do NOT Shake them (places paint all over underside of lid and then runs down into lip as it's opened) before opening. Lid underside can be wiped clean anyway before replacing...

The problem of those containers it's when you open it, you have to store the cap straight, not upside down otherwise you get dirty with the paint. However to open it you don't have to insist in a single place: push with a small flat screwdriver in one point, then carry on rotating the container and pushing on the screwdriver. The container will open up perfectly.

My problem is this: in a plastic paint pallet, using a small paint brush (eg size 8 and below) I mix a small amount of enamel with a small amount of enamel thinner. I mix it slowly but in so doing I somehow generate bubbles in the mix. These bubbles are near impossible to eliminate and are often transferred to the model. Suggestions? What am I doing wrong? Is it just simply because I am mixing with my paint brush rather than a stirrer? Also, in my climate, the enamel paint becomes tacky in a matter of seconds. When brushing, I didn't think a lacquer thinner mixed well with enamel solvent based paints?

I use this set up: Harder and Steenbeck Infinity 2in1 Needle: 0,4mm Pressure: 28 psi / 2 BAR Mixing: 50/50 If i use under 2 BAR the airbrush immediately clogged or just sprinkling. Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color can i used with 26 psi /1,8 Bar... What am I doing wrong ? Many greetings from Germany.

Hello ! I'm still trying to figure out what paint to use for my 20-years-old first model kit of a BMW Z3 lol. I have a question about enamels : don't they stink a LOT, so much that you should use a mask ? I've been trying to find acrylics that seem to be very easy to use, but where i live I could get Humbrol/Revell really easily, whereas Vallejo Model Air are hard to find and things like ZeroPaint is simply unavailable. So, should one worry about using those paints in a 1-bedroom appartment with only a modest paint booth ? Thanks for your quality content !

Love that Z3 kit. I built mine to look like my actual Z3, white with a tan leather interior. Paint smell is a tough one because it doesn't affect me as much as others as I was brought up in the family business which was spray painting jewelry and other objects. Plus a good spray booth helps. Tamiya paints have what hobbyist call the "Sweet smell" which is unique to Tamiya. While still a strong smell, it's different from other solvent based paints. I don't think Mr Color smells that bad at all. But Humbrol Acrylics actually spray really well. I feel they're one of the better pure acrylic paints out there. You could also get a jar of each type of paint and try it on a spoon and see if it bothers you. It won't be a waist because you can use it for brush painting too.

Hope i m not milking it but i would love to get your opinion on another Revell issue. Tried a bigger surface area on a gundam (Sinanju mg wrist parts) with the reverse wash technique in gold and Black. The Base in Mr Color lacquer paint gold. Then the layer to wipe later, in Revell Enamel black gloss. A couple of hours drying time and started wiping with lighter fluid (and or enamel thinner) , but then again the Enamel came off totally chippy and brittle no fine lines possible between the gold and black. What did i do wrong?

@annabanana7508 2 жыл бұрын
If i may be so bold and answer my own question. I ordered the tamiya enamel (from the polish shop) paints and the reverse wash technique works great with those (like shown in all the KZbin videos) Conclusion, revell is still an amazing resilient paint and in my opinion very easy to work with (filled in really silly unfunctional tin cans unfortunately) but are absolute useless when it comes to the washing techniques.

Yeah, that yellow does not reflect any light at all, it's almost black 🤪 They are fantastic paints, either with brush or airbrush, great covering, small pigments, self levelling. The acrilic line is also great. The tin lids almost always bend, on the first opening, but they are ok after.A wide screwdriver does the trick. I got some paints for over a decade an they are still ok. Just dropped 2 bearing balls in each container to help with the stirring, but I kept them in their own cups to avoid confusion. Great paints all round, not the best, but great, and cheap. 👍

There's a technique to opening caps on cans that you don't seem to know, and it would cure your opening issues. Use a flat blade screwdriver with a slim shank. put the blade under as you have been doing, and lift a tiny amount, turn the screwdriver nearly 90 degrees, and push the blade forward, still under the cap, in a radial movement. Apply a little downward pressure. Repeat until the lid is loose. (A video would make the description easier, but hey-ho....)

The design of the tins has been the same since they came on the market in the late '70's maybe there were some sort of tie up with Humbrol at the time but they have always seemed to have a different consistency to Humbrol enamel and smell different
@patrickhagelstein1810
@patrickhagelstein1810 3 жыл бұрын
Was about to say the same. Grew up with both brands as a kid back in Europe and they have always been slightly different with the Revell ones having a sturdier lid than the Humbrol ones. I always used a thick pin to pop the lids and the Revell one would come right off where the pin would only disform the Humbrol lid. Also, the (older) Humbrol paint would settle into a grainy substance in the pot with the oily liquid topping it off where the Revell paint stayed more consistent throughout. Loved to brush paint with them, but once I got into airbrushing I started off with Vallejo, through Tamiya to finally stay with Mr. Color and Mr. Paint (MRP) lacquers. The brushability of those Revell enamels (emails) is unbeatable though and I love them becoming available in the US!
