Paul...Excellent demonstration on painting. I was surprised to see you apply three primer coats and heating the UMP primer; never considered either. Great advice! Have you ever heard of an issue with the UMP primer getting thick or going off after opening the bottle? I understand you build more models in a year than most of us do in our lifetime so no products exceed their shelf life. I'm off to give these techniques a try on one of my automobile builds. Thanks for sharing your modeling experience.

Good tip about warming the primer using a baby's bottle warmer :-) I've recently started using UMP primer instead of my usual Alclad microfiller primer. Very pleased with the UMP primer so far, no where near as smelly as the alclad stuff! I wonder if the white UMP primer would be suitable after glossing up as a finishing coat on a white car?

Hi Paul. Thanks for this very informative series. I’m just getting back into modelling after many many years and need all the help I can get. I havn’t built my first model yet as I’m scared to F it up so using this time to learn and watch video tutorials such as this before I jump in. I’ll be using Tamiya TS spray paints for the bodies and hand painting the smaller parts for now until I can get an airbrush. Which paint would you recommend for a smooth finish with brush/hand painting? Thanks!

This series is really great. Although I don't build cars the techniques and information translate extremely well to any kind of model. When you say you are spraying at 20 PSI is that 20 on the gauge before spraying or what it drops to when you start spraying? Sorry if it's a stupid question 😅. Cheers Paul
@InternationalScaleModeller6 жыл бұрын
Hey Kamm, im showing 20 on the gauge before spaying mate, thanks for watching and commenting - Paul :)
@cdpgbc-mw2kz6 жыл бұрын
Kamm : There is never a stupid question. When you set your air pressure gauge to a set PSI, that is the PSI that should be coming out of your airbrush. Typically from what I have read, and watched, the PSI recommended is the actual PSI is coming out of the airbrush.
@matthewbrown16374 жыл бұрын
Hi again, just starting this model, I’m not keen on the TS sprays, I don’t feel I can keep control very well compared to using the airbrush. I was going to use the same zero paints like you did for the body, but with the virus there currently closed, do you know anywhere else where I might be able to get hold of it? I don’t like the X-13 either 🤦♂️

Hey Paul ( same name )... I tried using the lacquer mica blue paint for this on the bottom of the car and it turned out ok, but what a nightmare cleaning my airbrush with lacquer thinner Ugh!... I really want to avoid any lacquer paint as it's more hassle than it's worth for me. Tamiya mica blue LP-41 only comes in a can otherwise and I don't want to go down that road as I'm not confident in decanting yet and the cans themselves get so expensive. Is there a way to get say XF-8 Flat blue to have some shine to it?. This is my first BIG BOY kit after a few Airfix planes, I always wanted to do cars. I only have a cordless airbrush at the moment due to budget, meaning I have to thin my paint more than usual and be a couple inches closer than I'd like... it is what it is, the actual airbrush itself is good quality and pulls apart like any other, just lacks the power sadly haha... some day I'll get a compressor. Any help much appreciated.... oh and you scored yourself another Sub :)
@InternationalScaleModeller3 жыл бұрын
Lacquer paints should be the easiest paints to clean out using lacquer thinner, which thinner did you use?

Great video Paul. Excellent information and technique. As a beginning modeler one thing I'd love to see is how to recover from mistakes. Stupid question for you Paul. I am using UMP white primer on white plastic and I thought I covered it well after three layers, but it seems you've layered it on thicker in this video. Would I have to use something like a yellow primer so can actually see what I am doing? So yellow primer on white plastic, then covered with red (TS-95)? Or would you say it doesn't matter if the layer isnt' that thick since it's white plastic anyway? Cheers mate, these videos are brilliant and I follow them step by step!

Cleaning the primer out of the airbrush is a horrible job. Also this primer seems to spray nicely at the start but soon after starts to clog up and not flow that great. I couldn't spay it wet after 5 minutes if I tried. I'm not sure if it's the temperature here in Australia? What is your secrete to getting it to spray so well over a long period of time? Thanks mate.
