Here's the nest episode of Scales & Tales with the first part of a look at unlocking minor scales and modes with 'Minor Scale Mastery.'
This lesson begins where part two of Pentatonic Mastery left off, which is altering the minor pentatonic scale into the natural minor scale (a.k.a. Aeolian).
This episode takes that information a step further, by comparing the minor pentatonic scale directly to the Aeolian, Dorian, and Phrygian modes, which create a small part of the "minor scale family."
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and stick around for part two in this series - THANK YOU!

So basically pentatonic is home base f# minor pentatonic to be exact so we’re gonna be turning it into F# Dorian or aeolian frygian and they could take the place of the minor pentatonic if I were to be playing over a f# minor progression backing track like I do with my pentatonic scales (which I’ve gotten a lot better at because of pentatonic mastery btw) ... I’m trying to wrap my head around these it’s all new to me and I want to understand it ! Also can I turn every pentatonic box or shape in f# minor into a f# minor aeolian Dorian or Phrygian ??? And are all these modes are like key transferable like pentatonic as long as they are minor ??? I’m probably overthinking this but my minds blown and I hope I’m not asking super dumb questions and I’m on the right track of thinking ...

Well...in way, YES! The thing to remember here is that all of those scales you've mentioned (Aeolian, Dorian, and Phrygian) all contain the same five notes that are in the minor pentatonic scale = the 1-b3-4-5-b7 (or root - flat third - fourth - fifth - flat seventh). Now the thing that separates these scales from each other is when you add the two missing notes back into the pentatonic scale (the 2nd and the 6th). This changes that five-note pentatonic scale back into a seven note scale/mode If you added a regular 2nd and a b6 (to a minor pentatonic) it would become the Aeolian scale mode. If you added the regular 2nd and regular 6th minor pentatonic it would become Dorian. And if you added the b2 and b6 to minor pentatonic it would become Phrygian. This area of studying scales is tricky, but it sounds like you're getting REALLY close to nailing this info so I wanted to add as much as I could here to try and help. Good luck with this and keep going - you're almost there! : )

I usually teach which mode to use depending on the 4 chord. And go from there. If the 5 is dominant you can use harmonic minor. Always the chords first. Then figure out where I'm going. Something like that. Some songs use Natural and Dorian. Lie Shine on you crazy diamond. Or I can mix the Blues and Minors. I call it a hybrid scale. anyway good work David. Its funny for years I thought I was kind of a backwards thinker. Then As I learned I realized everyone was kind of doing the same thing. What ever gets you understanding it all.
