To celebrate reaching 3000 likes over on Facebook ( / scalewarmachines , here's our video tutorial showing you how to sculpt your own canvas tilt for vehicles from putties like Milliput, Magic Sculp.
It's a fairly extravagant way of making a tilt but this method allows you to create multiple variants of tilt for future builds of the same vehicle. In this case a 1:35th scale GMC 2.5t truck.
It used to be offered for premium download only but now here's a shortened version for free for you to enjoy.

I hear you Brother. Been using wet tissues glue and paints for years. 3d pens can make excellent frames. So much easier and cheaper.

A long and involved process that will take a lot of setup time. That being said the results are amazing and well worth it. Thanks for posting this.

The idea was to have a pattern meaning we can make more tarps for all GMC 2.5t family vehicle builds in future - so yes it was pretty excessive!

I’m thinking this might just be exactly what I need in order to custom-fashion a pair of “leather bat-wings” for a plastic model kit of KISS’s Gene Simmons in full Destroyer-era costume. Apparently the kit manufacturer did not presume that the bat-wings were an important component of his stage costume. The Milliput looks like just the thing I need to make these!

I'm disappointed. The replicated tarp is not much more realistic than the molded one but a lot or work. I thought you are gonna make it from fabric.

Great video ! I've never seen this method before and I must say it's an excellent method. My question is, how do you do this for something like the RSO you showed in your opening ? I've made one for one I built decades ago from tissue paper and white glue. It came out quite nice but I couldn't add details to it like your method allows. Once again I must compliment you for sharing this with us.
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 7 жыл бұрын
You're right this wouldn't suit every application. The RSO could be solved by buying the Italeri reboxing with a tarp & then doing as we did with the GMC. Otherwise, the problem with using the kit hoops is they are often too weak to support a putty tilt. The best solution is to build a jig using plastic card & brass tubing - but check it matches the kit precisely. Then you know you have a strong base over which to sculpt.
@ennisanderson2719

Scale War Machines Thanks. I didn't know that Italiari had added a bed cover to its RSO. I'll have to look for one.

May be wrong but we think they did the late body RSO with a tilt.

Scale War Machines I made a top for the earlier version from paper and white glue but I've never seen a top for either version. Maybe, they have issued a version with one ? I'll keep my eyes open for one ! I know that a resin top was available at one time but I never got one.

why couldn't you just place the milliput on the plastic tarp and cut the time in half?
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 7 жыл бұрын
This idea was to create a stronger pattern for reuse & to try to refine the detail & fit exactly. But yes, that would have worked too.
@TheAiurica
@TheAiurica 7 жыл бұрын
It would not work, as the plastic tarp exterior would mold the interior of the miliput tarp. So, your miliput tarp would be bigger by the thickness of the miliput. It would not fit on GMS, and out of scale also. You need to create a mold somewhat smaller that the original plastic tarp.

I have yards of sail material for wooden model ships that’s basically burlap, that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with ( I use silk for my sails it’s more realistic). Could that be used with a stiffener like some type of resin? What are your thoughts?
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 7 жыл бұрын
That sounds pretty promising. It's all a question of whether the weave is fine enough to give a scale appearance. Certainly worth a try. We've seen people use umbrella fabric too using viscous superglue as the stiffening agent.

What's the differences between milliputs?
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 7 жыл бұрын
Mainly colour & or consistency (i.e. fineness). White is the finest. Black is about the same as yellow-grey but nicer to work with due to the colour.

I have a question for you guys at Scale War Machines. Since I see you do a lot of mini figures for your models, I was wondering if you could make a video tutorial on how to make a person sitting down in a car? I'm wondering because I have this video game car I want to build, but the driver is what completes the car and it's entirety. Would I just need to use the miliputt and wires? If so, how do I put them in a sitting position without it looking awkward/ out of place? Thanks.
@scalewarmachines
@scalewarmachines 7 жыл бұрын
We have a video on this very subject planned but it may take a while. Use wires to make an armature of the figure seated & in position. Glue on a head & shoes/boots to get all the proportions right. Then fill out with Milliput for general body shape. Finally, sculpt on creases, folds & all the surface details like clothing & pockets. Tamiya Quick Type & Duro are great for these final details.

For years I use the method, with paper tissue and wood glue Is more realistic because it is thinner, A plane in this mass would be in the original as thick as a armor plate Just as I use "pattex" to create camouflage nets, in which I drop a tear on showfinder and thumb, and wait until they have something attracted. Then simply make an "arschlochzeichen" (german style) over the model and drop it

There's several colours, just happened to have black to hand. There is something nice about using the black Milliput and the detail is a bit more visible but, to be fair, it's exactly the same consistency as the yellow green or white. To see those versions, watch our dedicated video on Milliput.
