That is part of why the scams continue despite more education and awareness. You can tell people not to send money to people they don’t know, or to strangers” but some will say “ok, but he isn’t a stranger. He is my fiancé and I know all about him, even his favorite color.” And other victims even say they were aware of romance scams and their usual characteristics, but then describe their “relationships” as “yeah, there are a FEW things that are similar to romance scams, but it isn’t a scam because…” (insert reason).

For me it was when he said "devil" which I heard before "cousin". Also "calm" and "happy" sounds very west African for sure. Definitely NOT Swedish! The languages are so different. There's no way I buy that accent as Swedish. I'm born and raised in Minnesota, which had one of if not the largest Swedish migrations from Europe. There's a heavy presence of Nordic/Slavic culture still to this day. The tones and inflections of Ghanaian and Swedish are so completely different.

A few years ago my dad told me about a Ukrainian women who he was talking to who he was convinced was going to marry him as soon as she could get to the united states. He passed away in early 2022. When I got ahold of his belongings after he passed I went through his phone to see if he was still talking to that woman. It turns out he was, and he had sent her thousands of dollars over the past few years. When I went to close out his bank accounts after his death I found out he was negative $800 in his checking account from recently sending this person money that he didn’t even have in the bank, so it overdrafted his account. It irks me to my core that someone scammed him up until his very last breathe on this earth.

I don't think that after the initial romancing phase after you managed to get the other person to fall in love you have to work as hard. Like they talked about him contacting her more frequently around her payday. After someone is already head over heels you just have to put a minimun every now and then, and its amazing how her imagination will do the rest of the work for him. People need to understand the purpose of online dating sites before they sign up. The purpose is to meet in person. The site is to connect you so you can meet in person. The purpose is NOT to get into online "relationships" with people you never meet. You should not talk about personal topics or life history online. Topics like why you're divorced and your past history should only be shared in person after several meetings not with a total stranger. Why are people rushing into an instant relationship without doing the work? Trust must be earned not given away to anyone who comes along. If you want a real relationship you have to work at it. Which means meeting in person and actually getting to know someone in real life. If you're doing that then it's because that's too much work or too hard for you in which case you can take the easy way and go the online only relationship route but it will cost you a lot of money and it will never be real just fantasy.

After 100% proving he was a scammer, she unblocked him and wanted an apology from Scamfish. Furthermore, she wanted Scamfish to apologize for all the online relationships that they busted up.

It's your brain's fault -- the flattery causes a cocktail of chemicals to take over your brain and makes your morals and normal decision-making go out the window. It's like you've been put under a spell. I know this because I had this happen to me with someone I know in real life. It's an addiction and very hard to remove yourself from it.

Not just women, but sadly the romance novels have been around for decades, mostly targeted at women needing a fantasy. When you watch Dr. Phil recaps, men have been fooled, too. I’ve heard of lots of Russian or other nationalities break up marriages to get into the states…men being catfished to marry these predators much to the heartbreak from the wives.

They are more likely to call you darlin’, babe, honey… they aren’t exactly verbose in their use of terms of endearment, even when deeply in love.
