Recently I was in a Walmart and overheard two young employees talking about an elderly lady who was very upset and crying because the Walmart employee recognized the signs that she was being scammed and refused to sell her so many gift cards. This poor woman was convinced that if she didn't buy them that she would be in jail by sundown! There was about six employees surrounding her , trying to comfort her, and someone called the police. I was being nosy so I hung around a bit to see what happened. A few minutes later the woman's son arrived and gave her a huge hug and they walked out together. It broke my heart to see how scared she was , and the relief on her face when she saw her son, and the Walmart employees being so kind and helpful.

Many stores like Target now will ask you why you're buying the gift cards. It sounds a bit annoying, but I appreciate it because they're probably stopping a number of scams just by asking.
@brittanysmith72812 жыл бұрын
I wish this was true. I'm a Target employee, and yes, we are trained to watch out for these scams, but it's a very tight line we have to walk when asking about scams. Because most people won't believe they're being scammed, and it can take a lot of coaxing on our part about why the guests/victims are buying these cards. They're coached on what to say, like we heard in the video when the scammer said to say it's a wedding present. But (for me at least) there's no better feeling than when we do manage to stop the scams. I've stopped several over the years. I remember one where this poor woman started crying and gave me a hug because I stopped her from buying the cards. She walked into the store, on the phone and I overheard her say "okay I'm at Target now what" and I heard her say gift cards and my mind was like... you are not walking away from me come here. I told her to hang up the phone and asked her what was going on. I remember asking her if she knew this person and she said no. Her phone starts going off and I ask her if I can answer it. I say "hi I'm a target team member and I'm just asking the reason for these gift cards." He responded with "I'm her son" I look at the woman, still on the phone, and I'm like "Ma'am, is this your son?" When she responds no I was like "Have a great day sir" and hung up the phone. One of the best feelings ever. The woman was so thankful. She left that store more informed about these scams.

In fairness though, I believe that the system in place in the IT industries in India, although being exceptionally significant and definitely larger than most South Asian countries (aside from China since that is a population game, as well as a technological advancement), you would eventually have bad eggs who take advantage of the infrastructure at home. And as long as we have trash across the board, it still isn't the fault of Indians, rather it is the acceptance in the world, of exploiting vulnerable people to mint money.

@@ShehrozeAmeen they do it here in Australia too, compared to running a call centre in Australia, Canada, USA, U.K other major countries they offshore call centres and IT departments to India, it's dirt cheap to set up there. 99% off the time when you contact customer support or the IT team for a company it's legit, Indians on the daily grind. These scammers take advantage of that, they are the 1%. Because that industry as a whole is huge over there, Indian officials try to crack down on them, but for every scammer they take down, 2 more spring up. It's a contributing factor why a lot of people are immigrating out of India, I got a good friend from New Delhi, he told us the work force is volatile over there. The only other huge giveaway (besides them being sent to my yahoo junk folder right away, of course - thx yahoo filter for working!) is their litany of spelling and grammar mistakes. I will usually be able to catch one or two mistakes, but when I show it to my boyfriend, he always seems to catch way more. If they were able to write English properly, they would definitely suck way more people into their scam. And it really shows just how lazy they are - they really can’t figure out a way to get someone who is proficient in English to proofread something they are sending out to thousands upon thousands of people, in order to take money from them? My 70 year old grandmother had this exact same thing happen to her. I wish I could do something to the bastards that did this to her. I am so very glad that you are getting these assholes like this. I can't imagine how much stress and fear my grandmother went through going through all this. I would absolutely love to get my hands on that person that did this to her.

My grandparents are aware of this for 15 years now. I told them and if they have anything too complex they come through me. That's so simple to avoid.

@@the1observer Unfortunately for some older people they have no close friends or family they can rely on. Scum like this target these types of vunerable people who have no one else. I really hate them.

I get a ridiculous amount of enjoyment from watching ‘Vivienne’ driving around and running into things while you waste the scammer’s time. First class acting Pierogi. Thanks for all that you do to expose these criminals and educate the public.

Pierogi you rock!!!! I watch your videos daily. They have helped me get through each day knowing there are individuals like you that are looking out for the vulnerable of our society. I was with my sister when she got a scam call. I kept telling her to hang up but she was totally freaked out and kept getting sucked in by the caller. She finally hung up. When he called back I answered and told the guy I was calling the FBI. He then hung up. Your work has educated me and then my sister. It has a ripple effect, so keep up the amazing work!!!

I sooooo hope these scammers discover these videos and recognize themselves- it would be a huge low for them to see us being totally entertained by it all

I love the way you mess with them using the old lady personality, it's funny hearing them getting slowly enraged. The animation completely done it for me, I could not stop laughing! Keep up the good work guys, you're giving hope to those who are or have been at risk of identity theft xx

I just started watching your videos yesterday and it’s so crazy and sad how often this happens. I work in retail and have seen this a lot. As a matter of fact someone came in today trying to buy 5 Apple store gift cards in the amount of 500 each and after further probing, I was able to discover that this individual was actually being scammed. Luckily I was able to prevent him from getting scammed but it’s so sad to think about all the other people going through this. Thank you for your knowledge and videos!

I really hope more stores put up warning signs in their gift card displays, and have some kind of pop-up for the cashier to warn people of these scams any time they buy gift cards over X amount.

idk about the US but in Australia there is always a notice that basically says that nobody will ever ask u to pay with gift cards other than scammers
