My mom actually got scammed recently by people who were claiming she missed a court date, and basically threatened that she'd go to prison if she didn't go to court even though she had no record of a court date. She ended up calling, and they didn't have any thing for a court date. Disgusting

I live in Paris and the 3 shell game is very popular here when it comes to scamming, the dude mixing the cups will hide the rock/ball in his hand so there's no chance to win at all, don't think that maybe he put the ball in a different cup and try to guess randomly, there's no ball in any of the cups

Btw you cant get hacked from just scanning a qr code or a website but it can get stuff like GENERAL location without giving it permissions it cant do much also dont scar random qr codes because it maybe use a login for a third party website and wont require 2fa for the script kiddie/hacker to get access still i suggest using 2fa

The point is that those malicious QR codes direct to malicious sites and apps that try to look legitimate and tempt you into giving critical permissions and/or personal information. Yes, just going to a malicious page usually won't result in a hack, but those pages do their best to push you to enable the hack.

​@@ginnyjollykidd If you're trying to return the object to someone and it doesn't have discernible personal information on the box (I got one where it looked like the label was scratched in transit), a warranty would be a good place to start; it'd likely have AT LEAST the person's name and address. Which, interestingly, makes this the "dark twin" of the 'more free stuff' version, because it only kicks in if you try to do the right thing.

For the cup game they could also put 2 rocks in two different cups and when you guess one correctly they don't open that one but instead open another one with a different rock making you think it was under that one while there were actually 2 of them

The cup game is actually quite easy to do yourselves, its just simple sleight of hand, even if theyre watching closely u can position to where u can cover the rock or ball as it passes to the next cup. The best counter to this is earthbending

The second one seems unbelievable. On modern devices, downloads always require approval, you can't just get malware that gets your passwords by going to a website. They could put Cookies on your device that tracks your browser history, but they can get your passwords unless you allow a download. Even then, on a phone anyway, it would be very hard for it to get any info.

That’s not true, some websites, but rarely, can bypass authorization. I accidentally clicked on a Minecraft mod link once thinking it would take me to a page, but it just went and installed it. Definitely unlikely on iOS or android tho

They're not downloads, the virus or malware is executed remotely. This has been possible for decades and started in earnest in 2010/2011, and has been exploding in use for a decade now.

My father actually avoided one of the most believable scams once, he got a call from his 'sim company' and offered an upgrade at a cheap ass price. It was believable as hell, he even sent an email by the name of Three. It was believable and I fell for it while listening to him, then they asked for his back details (can't remember why) and my dad said he'd rather do it in person, and he didn't force him at all, he said something by the lines of "that's totally fine" and when we went to a store, they confirmed that they never called us.

In most cases, a person that is not greedy cannot be scammed. But sometimes a person who is too nice or does not want to offend someone by asking questions will be scammed. You can be civil and push back folks. It is not horrible to demand respect.

The one I see the most is trying to sell something on a local online selling app, Craigslist, Facebook marketplace. 'oh! I'm out of town but the item is exactly what I wanted, I will send you a check (for 4x what the item is selling for), please cash the check and send me the extra cash and keep an extra amount for yourself, I will then have someone pick up the item'. They will cancel the check and you're left explaining to the bank where their money is at, you'll be on the hook for the funds.
