Even minor home repairs can present challenges for older adults. Changing a light bulb or the smoke alarm battery may involve using a ladder which could be dangerous. Teri Burrows, Outreach Coordinator for Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, explained their new program, Handy Andy, designed to help seniors stay in their home and take care of minor repairs. Handy Andy is a volunteer handyman service in Ocean and Monmouth County, NJ, designed to assist seniors aged 60 + in aging gracefully in their own homes. Recognizing that many seniors face challenges in finding reliable repair services for small home maintenance issues that are both safe and affordable, they offer a free service. Seniors can call when they need assistance with minor repairs, and CVCJ staff will coordinate with a volunteer to visit their home. For those who are homebound, materials can be purchased by the volunteer, but must be reimbursed by the homeowner. Seniors can easily register by completing a brief application over the phone.
