@tosca...4 жыл бұрын
@Monica Fajardo That's true up to a point. It's a bit like music and maths. Some people's brains are wired to absorb some kinds of knowledge more easily than others. It's why some people have "maths brains", others have "language centric brains" and can analyse in numbers and mathematical conceptions or others are good at philosophy, history, literature and analysis expressed in language. If you have a "language brain" it gets easier to learn new languages the more languages you know. Chomsky proved this in his work on the grammatical structure of languages. When I was young, a young women came to me to ask me if she could come and have English conversation every day - we were in the same college. She grew up speaking Georgian and Russian. She had learned German, French and Italian before college and she was about 26 at the time. She took 6 weeks to become fluent speaking English and 4 months becoming a competent writer. She was doing her degree in philosophy and politics in English. She said knowing German made it easiest to speak English. In the second half of the year she learned Spanish and Swedish - she found native speakers to help. In one year she went from 5 languages to 8 and with Swedish it wouldn't be difficult for her to learn Norwegian and Danish. She wanted to move to Asian languages next. Mary had done top levels maths and science in high school which means she possibly had a more maths-centric brain. She had (maybe still does?) a Tasmanian centric quirk of pronunciation in English which is not the norm in general Australian English which she hadn't changed by the time she did the pre-wedding documentary about her life. Years spent in Melbourne and Sydney hadn't changed that by 2004. Our earliest language habits are the hardest to change if we don't have a brain which is wired for language. The Netherlands' Queen Máxima speaks native Spanish and learned English at school and to this day speaks a hotch potch of Dutch because she didn't persevere with it. Mary persevered and apparently speaks excellent Danish according to Danish friends of mine.

Today we celebrated their oldest son, prince Christian's, 18yr birthday. 200 young ordinary people from all corners of the country were invited and mingled all night with royals. They all shared a table with a Danish or foreign prince or princess. Must have been quite special. The royals of the three Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) are inter-married and family anyways, so a lot of those. But others too. 🎁🎂🎁🎂

He was also so touched when she walked down the aisle towards him, when they got married. He cried of happyness, so sweet.
