At the end of the 1800s, the Danish King, Christian IX and his wife, Queen Louise, married their six children into the dominating European royal families and Christian IX became known as "Europe's Father-In-Law". Today, his descendants are to be found all over Europe.
These are their stories, stories of power, love, triumph, tragedy and honour, recounted through interviews and never before published letters, photographs and home movie footage, by over 30 members of the European royal family.
Anecdotes handed down through generations give insight into a Europe ruled by 'dynasty politics' where arranged marriages created alliances between countries.
Episode 1 - The Father-In-Law of Europe.
In the Europe of the 1800s, Denmark, England, and Russia each have a childless king; all three need an heir to the throne. Speedily arranged marriages, births, and cunning strategies bring King Christian IX, Queen Victoria and Tsar Alexander II to the throne.

Thank you very much for this great documentary. What I love the most about it is that it comes across as practicaly impartial. Not trying to glorify one monarch and disgrace other. Just presenting events as they were happening not trying to influence the viewer's opinion as much as in other documentaries I've seen - in particular documents about life of Queen Victoria. So thank you for that 💙

To me, the biggest challenge watching these documents (or studying European history) is to figure out who's who, there seemed to be only a handful of names available for dozens of kings and queens, princes and princesses. Grandfathers and grandsons named the same, so was the case of grandmothers and granddaughters. And, they're ALL related by either blood or marriage.

Such a wonderful documentary to watch! It would have been even better with english subtitle added. Not just the muted gaps for easy follow through, the subtitle will be greatly appreciated for the hearing impaired audiences. They sure not want to miss this great piece and enjoy learning European history. I do expect myself to watch at least twice of all episodes and acquire a better understanding of relations and characters.

Thank you for this interesting series. I know a lot about British royals, but nothing of the Scandinavian, except when they married into British. But Victoria did have siblings. And her sister was there with her. However, she was a bit older and left to get married when Victoria was a child. Her brother stayed in Germany. She also had other children to play with. Victoria was extremely hyperbolic her whole life. And extremely self pitying. However, she WAS extremely overprotected.

I take away so much from these but what stays with me the most is the fate of Russia under Czar Alexander once he crumbles up the new constitution his father and uncle were wanting to put in place. He sealed the fate of the people and I would go further and say sealed the fate of his own son. Czar Nicholas and his whole family who were executed! I agree with the Constantine the big "if" of history!

My family is from Germany, because the 7 families were basically enticed by land in USA, however once in USA , they found they were duped. They then joined 6 other families who signed a contract with Benjamin Franklin and friends, they sailed up to Canada, only to abandoned these families... they barely survived with the help of 1 stranger, who taught the 7 families how to survive in our climate.. The Queen of Denmark has a surprisingly English accent. I’m assuming she was taught English elocution when she was younger bc no one speaking Danish as their first language would sound like that.

The Queen of Denmarks' mother spoke excellent English as her mother was a princess of Great Britain. The queen of Denmarks mother was Swedish princess Ingrid, who had a British mother, Margaret of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Im apalled that a member of the british royal family is so ignorant. Queen Victoria was indeed raised in a stifling manner called the kensington system but she notes in her diary that she saw the prime minister and archbishop of Canterbury alone when informed she was queen. Her first order on assuming the throne was to demand seperate apartments to her mother. Society demanded as an unmarried woman she lived with her mother but as soon as she was queen her mother was banished to the furthest apartments to the queens and she only saw her mother in public when it was demanded by a social occasion. She was single at this time. She had seperate apartments from her mother for nearly 2 years until she married

I've recently read and reviewed two books recently about this time period. One was called "From Splendor to Revolution," which was a very good biography about 4 Romanov women and the second one was a novel called Victoria. That one was...Well lets say there was a lot of disappointment which I share in the video. :-).
