Do you not have to double clutch in a Scania? is it fully synchronized mesh? could you float the gears like on an old american truck with an Eaton Fuller?
@markpritchard Жыл бұрын
Its synchronized all the way through so no need to double clutch. Although i do up the revs to match the road speed when changing down the gears. Most the trucks we have are now autos. The new drivers we have turning up at the yard these days wouldn't know what to do with a spliter as they no longer teach it in driving test, So the newest drivers have the newest trucks while the older drivers who know how to drive properly end up with the older trucks as the new drivers don't know how to drive them.

@mark pritchard yeah. Im originally from Scunthorpe North Lincs, and I had my class 1 in the UK about a decade ago, but then I moved away to North America. Used to Drive Scanias for Stobarts when I worked for agency as a temp, and with my mate's firm he had Volvo FH13 and Ren Premiums. Mostly drove Renault Premiums, then lastly before I left I was in DAF XF and DAF CF. I once drove a Manual DAF XF. I'm in a Peterbilt 389 now though. Has a DAF MX13 engine in it though. I had to forget all I knew in the UK about driving to learn how to drive these big buggers at 63 Tonnes. When I started learning out here I was in an 18 Speed too.

@@carsandmoods3593 I must admit i've never driven an American truck but i've always fancyed a go. There are a few American trucks that do the truck shows and there are aslo a few American recovery trucks to. The gearbox failed on my Volvo a few years back and it was recovered back to the yard by a massive American truck. Loads of room in the back of it as well. I've only got a tiny bunk behind the seats as i'm sure you'll remember. I would get it in and out all the stupidly tight places i have to deliver to though. My main truck today is a Volvo with the i shift, Really easy to drive and although i can drive the older trucks i have to have a new one to go into the London LEZ or Low Emishion Zone. And when you spend 15 hours crawling around London on car lenght at a time and auto is alot less work. I still like to take a manual out once in a while though, Show the new drivers how its done.

When you park the truck, do you leave it gear, or in neutral?
@markpritchard2 жыл бұрын
I always leave it in neutral. If its parked up for a long time it can lose all its air, then you can't get it back into neutral to start it. Some trucks although mostly auto's won't start unless they are in neutral so then you've got a catch 22, need to build the air up to get it into neutral, but cant start it to build up air becouse its in gear. So by always leaving it in neutral you will never have that problem. Like i say its more of an auto problem however if i'm in a truck i don't know, leave it in neutral.
@artemkatelnytskyi2 жыл бұрын
@@markpritchard thank you! Do I understand correctly, that you need air to disable the parking brake? Does it make it fail proof? Since the logic behind leaving a car in gear is to prevent it from rolling if the handbrake fails.
@markpritchard2 жыл бұрын
@@artemkatelnytskyi Your welcome buddy. And yes, with no air you can't move as the air pressure holds the brake pads away from the disc. And as the cluch is air as well with no air you will have a job getting it started to build the air up if you've left it in gear and you've no cluch to pull it out off gear or even worse if its auto. Most people know there unit however if your attached to a trailer with a small air leek and you leave it for say 9 or 11 hours then come back to it with zero air pressure, You've got a problem. If you've got a big air leek don't even leave it for a short time in gear, that said it should be VOR if thats the case.

Hello, Simplest way to think of it is it's like knowing what gear your car needs. Its the same with the lorry only there are more of them and you also need to factor in the waight. Once you've driven it a while you soon know, and just like a car it will let you know if you've selected the wrong one.

I'm from Morocco doing my EC training, already have the standard C license in the bag and that was by no means a walk in the park, kind of nervous about the heavier and longer dimensions, especially for reverse. My dream is to get my own truck and/or go abroad to the EU or UK and work there. I'm fully committed, so my question, do you think it's doable and do you have any tips, thanks in advance.
@markpritchard Жыл бұрын
Well for starters well done for getting your C licance. You've definatly started the Journey to becoming a truck driver. Going for your artic licance or class 1 as we call it here in the UK is a dounting thought, but for the well prepared its definatly achievable. If you can, get your self in the passanger seat of one for a ride out this will let you see what its all about and you'll notice the line the drivers take when turning and manovering. If you can get a drive of one on private land then even better. We have had one or two young lads start with us working in the yard so they can drive the trailers about with an old shunter unit, then when it come's to driving lessons they are already very used to manovering the thing. When your looking for a driving school don't think go for the cheepest, go for the best instructors, which might be a little bit more expensive but if you go cheep then fail the test two or three times it might work out the cheep one was more expensive then passing first time with the more expesnive instructors. Afraid i can't say to much more about driving or passing your test in Morocco as i've never been or done any driving there. Would love to go one day though. Don't let me put you off but in the UK anyhow, owning your own truck is very difficalt. Its hard to make money when the bigger companies can get fuel cheaper and also fleet insurance along with a maintenance contract. Don't forget you won't get much work unless your truck can go into the citys which these days means driving into a low emmissons zone (LEZ) So you will need a truck that complies with that as well as having all the saftey blind spot camers and audible warnings. I say this as i know a few people who have owned their own truck and have said its not worth it. They say they make more money working for a company then they can owning their own lorry. It might be diffrent outside the UK i don't know, But i've looked into becoming an owner driver myself as i'd love my own truck too, However it dosn't look good. Afraid the big companies have got it all for themselves and its near imposable to compete with the big companies and survive on your own with just one tractor unit. That said there are one or two driver out there that do manage it so its not impossible, just very difficault. Good luck my friend I hope you get out there driving a big truck soon.

Thanks Ben. I wold say it depends how its loaded. We pull a lot of cheese which is a lot of the time on the weight limit so for us yes it is necessary. Even more so when we're driving around Yorkshire or Wales. Can be very narrow roads and steep hills so I wouldn't want to be without it there. How ever don't really need it when I'm pulling an empty trailer or something light like plastic trays. I just start off in the highest low box gear, change up to high range and get going without the side ranger all the way up then i'll flick it up when I'm in top gear so I'm in the highest range possible.

@@markpritchard no problem man, yeah that makes sense actually going through every gear when heavy loaded. so If the truck is empty I could get away with 3rd low as its got plenty of torque? that's handy not to bother the splitter only have it flicked up after top gear that's class plus more options at heavy loads and tricky areas. Hello and well done with passing your class 1, its a hard test to pass so you've already done well. As with the seat I normally have it level but I do get a bit stiff in the legs some times so I will deliberately put it in a different position if I find it helps with the stiffness. There really isn't any wrong or wright with the seat as long as you can see clearly and can easily reach all the controls, after that its whatever's comfy for you. Stay safe out there buddy.

I'm normally in a Volvo but mine was in the garage when I did this. This year I think I've driven a Scania twice. The problem is although I do like Scanias its always two in the morning and pitch black when I get in it so I can't see bugger all and I can't remember or can't find half the buttons or switches as I'm so used to the Volvo lay out. We also have both the old and new scanias on are yard just to make it extra hard to try and remember. All though we do have an old V8 which is a rather lovely thing. I've only driven it twice in the 9 years I've been there but I get on well with that one. That one has the leaver coming out the centre of the dash a bit like a 2nd parking brake and it defiantly works, makes a lovely noise and you can really feel the extra breaking. That said, I'm now in the newer shape Volvo which still has the 3 stage brake but it doesn't seem as good as my old Volvo. Whats going on here, why are retarders and exhaust brakes not as good on newer lorries?

I am defiantly with you on that one Emma. I also think the same of tractors, Which is why I have an old grey fergie, simple, so easy to fix that even I can fix it, and I know what all the levers do. I was watching a video on gear changing with a modern jcb fast-track. The video was 30 minuets long and I was lost after 5 minuets, Its got 7 clutches so you can change gear while ploughing without stopping, in my day you made sure you hade the correct gear before you dropped the plough, if you got it wrong and it started to struggle you could lift the plough a tiny bit but if that didn't work you would have to revers and have another go. Sadly due to low emission zones popping up in most city's these days we have to have new complicated electronic engine management controlled things these days.
