Thanks so much for another great video !! I can't begin to tell you how much you've helped me and my career as an aspiring Diag Tech. My first 20+ years in the automotive repair industry I just went with the flow, content with just swapping out the parts they told me to. @@ScannerDannerhaving been learning lots of fundamentals and basics from you, now, I'm preparing to modify all doors to be locked automatically when car speed reached 40 kmph and unlock as soon as engine is off in my i20 2011 Magna India version. In fact, such auto lock feature was not available in the car variant Magna.

Sweet videos! Did you ever swap it out? The Expeditions are so much easier than the F-150 and can be swapped out in 10-15 min once the seats and center console are out.

And the numbers move opposite of each other is because one is facing one way and the other one is facing the other way. Therefore facing opposite directions moving opposite directions

Door position sensor operates as a compass reading? Zero as NORTH, 60 being NE, 255 being SW, etc. as in nautical or aviation headings. Doors are moving on a pivot clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Ive seen when these motors short out, they fry the module under the upper center console part, its like a half ass HVAC module. You put the new actuator in, and still have no opperation or it fails the calibration.

Thanks Mr Danner for all your help in the automotive repair world I've mechaniced for 30 years now in Ireland and I'm learning every day with help from techs like your self, but is it not that amperage on the motor wont check the mechanical linkages and flaps in the heater. Thanks mate.

High amperage can be a frozen motor or the door itself. So amperage gives us direction but not a definitive of which of the two it would be. But that would be all you would need to 100% pull the dash right?

Just wanted to say ive been doing that for almost 30 years now myself had to learn most of it from hands on with guidance from a master tech its not always going to be easy or always the first thing you find slot of times it will be so simple you kinda just look over it and make a simple mistake but nobody's perfect and sometimes it the problem is so stupid it's crazy ive seen so odd stuff sure you have to ive even had some that drove me insane but you can't give up it could be found eventually may just walk away for awhile and come back and it hit you like a rock

Another great informative video!! Seems to be a modern vehicle issue- to cram so many features into a car: more features = more things to go wrong & way more digging & removing when they do $$$. I wonder if any manufactures know this?

Hey Danner, quick useful tip for the Autel, after you've done the scan, tap the 'list' tab right next to the topology tab and it'll give you the same report as the report tab does however you'll see tabs next to the code description to shortcut straight to freeze frame data and shortcut straight to the module whereas the report tab doesn't 😁👌

I wonder if it would prove a stuck actuator by using a scope and a low amp clamp at the battery itself. A blip on the screen would indicate the command and wiring working but the actuator not.

28:00 driver's side reading is probably opposite because the actuator is mounted upside down/on the bottom of the housing compared to the passenger side mounted on top the housing.

One thing i have gotten in the habit of doing with this type of code is confirm the actuator is the correct one shown in service info. And visually see if it moves using a inspection camera. Ive been burned with getting wrong info.

I had to replace the blend door on my 2009 Ranger. It stuck in the heat position and then finally failed in the vent/cool position. It was fairly accessible after removing the glove box. If it clicks but doesn't move, it can be lubricated, but mine was dead and had to be replaced. $40.00 part but not quite two hours for diagnosis and replacement. I guess it could have been worse.

The older ones had a self test, it would spit out codes. Crown vics are similar but if you dont mind some bloody knuckles you can install without taking out the dash (partially anyway).

after finding sufficient power and ground to the actuator motor at the module connector, I would have done a resistance check through the drive motor from the module end to confirm continuity on the wires and motor. If *that* was good, I would be dropping a bore scope down the duct if possible to see if there was an acorn or pencil jammed in the door.

Is there a reason why the potentiometer is draw as having 3 individual resistors rather than one big resistor representing the carbon strip? Or is that just how they chose to draw it?

Not sure on this one, but it doesn't change the operation at all. First time I've seen one drawn this way too.

That's 8.6 hrs plus the time and material to evac and recharge the A/C. Also since there is possibly a A/C leak it would be advantageous to check and replace the evap core while it's out :)

But Paul, It's only 6.6 hours to remove transmission then torch cut a hole in the floor to replace the actuator (and hopefully catching the car on fire for the insurance.....)

It's not really necessary to check each motor wire individually with the test light. You could just connect each end to the motor control wires and then test the drivers that way. If the light illuminates when the temperature increase and decrease buttons are pressed, the drivers are good. Then, the few moments you save can be better used removing the dash. ;)

Understand for sure, I prefer individual circuit tests for each driver. This would have been derived from a stepper motor where I have saw one failed driver on one of the 2 coils and without knowing for sure the direction or polarity being applied, the individual test was key. Now for a regular DC electric motor? You are right, by simply increasing the temp, you want to see the light, light and then the same thing when decreasing temp. I think when I was talking about this, I was thinking more along the stepper motor circuit. Thanks!

Hey Paul, if I were to send you some files off a 2000 Ford Windstar 3.8 L that the engine shakes like crazy. We have had no less than 10 people take a shot at it and try to fix it, no luck. The files are from a Picoscope machine (.psdata). With some additional info do you think you could look at them for me and interpret them for us please?

I can't stop laughing at your hair growth problems. I've said something similar about how all mine simply migrated to my back. My eyebrows are kinda bushy in one way, but the hair is thin and light, making them kinda tough to even see. Now I've got some red strands growing in that are long and thick enough that I could braid them into something that could be rated with a towing capacity. I'm only 45 and I have this shrubbery starting to sprout out my ears, too. I'm gonna look like an extra from Lord of the Rings before too long.

Anytime you read a blend door on chevys with the tech 2 it's always in counts I've had alot of pigtails go bad and cause this problem usually it's on the drivers side which is the easy one to get to on Chevy trucks

Lol they still buried the blend doors. I did mine on my 05. I cut the sub structure of the dash on the drivers side so I only had to take out a third of the dash to get to the motor.

why do they use counts .because their already there .they are counting the segments of the commuter

Great question! I see no need to count the motor segments, it has a potentiometer there for that reason! Door position. It is strange that the pot signal is displayed on the scan tool as counts. I don't have an answer right now but ill try to find it for you.

It would pull high amps and as far as positive or negative, that would be a factor of how you placed your amp clamp and what direction the motor is rotating

Absolutely and I should have addressed this in the video. It is why testing the drivers is so important. You wouldn't want to do all the dash work only to find out when you are done that the HVAC module also needs replaced

If there was a short to ground in one of those wires would it fry the module? Or is there a form of circuit protection that isn’t shown in the diagram? I’d image that the module uses the potentiometer to monitor movement and would cut power to the motor if it stopped moving unexpectedly to protect the circuit that way?

Great insight. I would hope so (circuit protection if the signal stops moving) Yes, a short to ground would definitely hurt the driver unless there is some circuit protection.

I was not concerned in this circumstance. At first I was, until I received all the facts. The coolant loss needed to be looked at but had nothing to do with the low heat on the drivers side.

Ford has this thing about their dash boards coming out to replace anything. I remember the Taurus heater core was an 8 hour job (although some guys whittled it down to 4 hours)! Who builds them like that? Heater core on my wife's caravan is a 1 hour job. All blend doors are easy to get to. Ford wants you to bring your car to them & bang you good. Never again, Henry!

Would an Autel with the Oscilloscope accessory be a good starter scanner or would it be better to get a used Snapon Modis or Verus?

The snapon has guided component tests that walk you through testing. I believe the autel does not have guided . Tests. I personally like the verus. Get the most recent update possible when buying snappy. I purchased mine from ebay. You can find on Facebook cheaper, however not very offen. Verus updates are over a grand a year! Dig deep! I hope this helps. Scannerdanner.com has great verus classes, well worth the price.

@@ScannerDanner another benefit of the Snapon is that the scope and Scan Tool are all integrated into one tool without the need for a seperate box. A lot better for portability. Are there any other deciding factor that would support buying a used Snapon over an Autel? To me, it seems like the Snapon interface might be a bit more polished than Autels. And I like how the Snapon only lists modules and tests the car actually supports.

I seen tesla's wiring diagram they all the same its modules with the same can high and can low powers and grounds with switched inputs just the difference with them is that dc to dc high battery 400 v to DC 12v converter ,and the inverter is the brain to the motor just controlling the current to the motor for different speeds. And still use potentiometers for accelerator pedal as input to the inverter. I just wanted to add something to this that tesla also has this ecoder motor that's another name for speed sensor that uses two hall effects that the ground was sheard with the app ,the ground voltage would rise and sow did the signal on the app would as well the car would just fly through a wall lol.

Service info said it is initiated by simply restoring power to the HVAC module and then pressing any button but off lol. That's all they said in that chart. I'd imagine a battery disconnect would do the same thing.

Hey man,I'm having a serious issue with my 02 civic. I replaced my piston rings and my car crank but wont start afterwards. The tip of my plugs are wet with fluid except for #1cylinder thats not so wet like the others 3 cylinders. What you think? Not getting any sparks on cylinder 2-4 but getting sparks on cylinder 1 because its not as wet as the other I'm thinking its the only one that getting spark. Please help.

@@ScannerDanner i just recheck my cam timing and it way off. The up mark on the pulley was in the down position when it should be pointing up..i fixed it but it wont start because my battery might be weak. I see the light in my dash starts to flicker..

Brilliant stuff as always, Paul & Caleb. This type of engineering always brings me to ranting ... That Expedition is what I like to call, "A-hole engineering" - prime example of it right there. This is how they basically extort you into another car payment. When your heat doesn't work and it's -14°F out, you're going to want to get it fixed (especially if the wifey is driving it -you're gonna hear about that!). When presented with a $2,000 quote to do the job, you throw in the towel and buy another poorly engineered, overpriced, s-box. And the cycle continues! ZERO incentive for automakers to change. Where did all the innovators go? Take a look at history - there were DOZENS of automakers in the early part of the 20th Century, each offering customers something the others couldn't. One by one, they all fell by the wayside, except for 3 (domestically, anyway). All these brilliant minds couldn't have just disappeared. Where did they all go? Sure makes you wonder. We've got Tesla ... but is that because he's making what the powers to be WANT him to make? Get the world on electric, and now someone can shut it all down at the flick of a switch! Hmmm ... lots of questions, few answers ...
