I've learned a lot from this video, thank you very much! As for the picture controls/styles, they're just metadata embedded in the RAW file. Whether they'll be read and interpreted or ignored depends on the software you'll use to open the RAW file.

Excellent tutorial! I am getting my ES-2 next week and will use this tutorial as a guide. The picture controls for the negatives will be tremendously useful. I would also like to use the ES-2 for scanning my slides as well. I would like to ask if Vincent has any advice to tweak picture controls for slides? I am assuming that the tweaks made to the picture controls will give better colours for slides..

Very helpful video. What is the MW_MC_NEG used for? Do you have a .NP2 for color negs? How are these created? Not in the Picture Control utility. Are the picture control parameters being applied to the .NEF? I assumed it was pure sensor data, but it appears it isn't.

Wow! A KZbin video from someone who actually has experience, knowledge and knows how things work. Thank you sir for taking the time to make this video for us. I agree that, for better or for worse, the best software for interpreting the RAW file is the software made by the people who designed the sensor. In my case that's Canon DPP4, which now can only save to a copy of the source file due to access permission fights with windows, but so be it. Now I need to go forth and see if anyone has made negative reversal presets for that software, so that hopefully I can do all of the image interpretation inside the mfrs. software. Thank you again for making this

Thanks a lot for this excelent video tutorial! It help me a lot to understand the entire process to scanning negatives using the Nikon DSLR with Nikon ES-2 kit. About picture control, the files available to download are working fine on my Nikon Capture DX-D, but I was not able to load those files on my cameras (D5000 and D600), A message " No Picture Control Files found o memory card " My memory card was formated on my cameras, and the files copied into the card, I tryed first copy the files to DCM folder, criated when the card was formated and after that, on root, but did not work in any of may cameras. I will really appreciate if you could confirm if those files are compatible with my listed cameras. Thanks in advance.

Hope so, would seem much faster. Also, is focus peaking (z50) hugely helpful for this job? My money not unlimited, maybe d5600 adequate. Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for this great video - I know I am very late to respond, however have a question: If the emulsion side of the negative film faces the lens when using the ES-2 (as explained in the video), this means that in post one needs to flip the image 180 degrees horizontal - but how do you do this in Nikon NXD or even Nikon NX Studio which does not seem to have a function to flip 180 degrees horizontal? Other raw converters such as RawTherapee offers 180 degree horizontal flip but would be great to be able to do so also in a Nikon native program. Any advice?

With the 40mm DX lens, does the whole 35mm film frame fit into the picture on a DX body? A bit surprising considering that there is no adapter ring required either.
@MrMom950
@MrMom950 5 жыл бұрын
it has to do with the minimum focus distance / working distance of the lens... the digitizer was aparently made to place the film at exactly the right distance for the 40mm DX, then it includes the adapter to push the film out a bit for the 60mm 2.8G with the small adapter.. and then with the large adapter, push it out to the MFD for the 60mm 2.8D... So each adapter (or lack thereof) puts the film at the 1:1 minimum focus distance for each lens... whiere it would fill the screen

Hi Kris, pentax make a fantastic looking one but its expensive I think £800 ....I'm thinking of getting a mamiya 67 and going to copy the neg's from it with my D810. But was thinking of making my own neg/ slide copier to use with the D810 but build it round a old 120 negative holder from a enlarged, in saying that it wouldn't be that hard to make a better one than the Nikon ES 2 using interchangeable 35 and 120 enlarger negative carrier's, black plastic pipes, of white plastic the stuff you get on a light box or better use one of those small battery powered light boxes and a old filter with the glass removed with a wee bit trial and error 🤔 and put the £120 towards a nikkor af 60mm f2.8 D.

Here is what I plan to do: * Find various sizes of used film carriers designed for an Omega 4x5" enlarger (they have registration pin slots) * Set up a focusing rack that is centered on the 35mm carrier, then back up the camera for larger films * Mount a diffused light source behind the film stage (probably a LED with a CRI >90 or a small AC powered strobe) * Copy the films with my Nikon DSLR and one of my Micro-Nikkor lenses Terry Thomas... the photographer Atlanta, Georgia USA

I like the system but can hardly find it a good solution to scan negatives - that is , in my situation . I have a lot of 35mm negatives and positives , but also have 120 format negatives - so no dice here for the 120's. Secondly : I have the D850 , good , but I have the Tokina 100mm macro - so also here - no dice . It would mean , I have to buy a 60mm macro , the ES-2 & then I still can't scan my 120 ones. So a good flatbedscanner will have to be a solution for me.

Nice tips EXCEPT for one thing....I got a Lume Cube as shown and realized it really SUCKS for this purpose (poor CRI, temp that is > 6000K) which will throw off the color balance. So, if you don't want to spend a lot of time correcting for this (if even correctable), there are other brands with adjustable temp and CRI well into the 90s (or just going outside and taking a photo against bright sunlight works much better than this light source)

And we are never told which of the 3 Picture Controls is used for what types of film, or what they do. What do the abbreviations in the names mean? How are we supposed to figure out which is the one to try first? And do the Picture Controls only work with the 850, or will they work with any of the designated models? The intent here is to be helpful, and it does to a considerable degree, but it is flawed.

I could not simply load the three profiles to my D750 as was done on the D850 in the video (you'll find the profiles at versacephotography.com/es2myneg/ ). From the D750 manual it seems it should be possible, but it didn't work. Here's what I did to make it work. First, format the SD card (Slot 1). Then open the SD card on your computer and create a folder called "NIKON" in the SD root and within that folder create a folder called "CUSTOMPC". (You can also create this folder on your camera by saving a modified Picture Control from the D750 to the SD card, which is actually the way I did it). Then the crucial bit: rename the downloaded profiles to PICCON01.NP2, PICCON02.NP2 and PICCON03.NP2. Then copy the renamed profiles to the "NIKON/CUSTOMPC" folder on the SD card. Now put the SD card into Slot 1 on your D750. Now open Menu, go to the Shooting tab and select Manage Picture Control, then Load/save and then Copy to camera. Now the profiles should appear with their original names (not the PICCONxx.NP2 names). Select the first profile, click OK and then select a slot for the profile (there are 99 slots). This should do the trick.

this does not work on any recent camera besides the D850, it does not reverse color on the D750 D500 etc... Nikon must have changed it so you can't invert color curves. I have spent many an hour trying to get this to work on negatives captured with a D750, the Nikon Picture Control utility won't invert the colors.

Nikon NX-i has picture control utility which allows you to invert the image to make a positive from the negative, as well as set the white balance point from the border before saving it to either the software or a card to transfer to the camera. This works fine with the Nikon Z7 NEF images.

Nikon also made a couple of 55mm makro lenses, which are actually amongst their sharpest. That they don't provide an adapter for these lenses is annoying.

If my math is correct, there are over 4,320,000‬ images in that storage. I don't think scanning all of those with that set up is realistic. I'd rather pay the $200.00

Yes that is correct I have that many negs. I was a Hollywood headshot photographer fir lot of years. I have been come selective in what I have my assistant do. If you thin I am bad You see Jay Maisel's collection.... I owned a very successful headshot photography studio in Hollywood. I shot 6 day a week. I shot on average between 20-25 rolls of film a day six days a week. I dropped off the film on Thursday, picked it up on Monday. Spent all day Monday going over contact sheets. Certainly not something I miss. Did that for over 15 years. It was a lot of hard work. Having the luxury of being able to shoot that much made me the photographer I am today.

In case you did not know: LED lighting is utter crap. A strobe's spectrum is very close to that of the sun (a similar thing is happening in there) and it has a continuous spectrum but an LED only has a discrete spectrum by design with some peaks of wavelengths overlapped which is really bad. Think of it like that: You are shooting with a red, a green and a blue laser.

Narwaro interesting thought. I did wonder. Also I am not convinced that direct light into the camera is the best idea. If there are any scratches on the slides it might make them stand out more than a soft diffused light.

terry staniforth - I’d use my 5000k Full spectrum lightbox from my film shooting days. Or set up a white color neutral piece of background paper and shoot flash into it. Like a copy stand setup. Shooting a few test frames to zero in the exposure would take very little time.

Eric B seems high, but if he was a newspaper photojournalist, couple of assignments a day, certainly possible. I worked with lots of photographers in film era, they burned through it, it was the most unreliable (so you’d deliberately shoot your desired shot on more than one roll) and cheapest element. I remember doing a sunglasses catalogue for Polaroid, we shot 50 rolls a day...
