Scarabus 10 year old Islay Single Malt Scotch from the independent bottler Hunter Laing was matured in ex-bourbon casks and fresh American oak casks. Scarabus is the name of a mystical place on the Scottish island of Islay and is translated as 'a rocky place'.

Benromach 10. I am presently on the hunt for a Scarabus 10 and need to go out of state for it. I've tried the original release and reeeeeeally liked it. I put it in the same class as Port Charlotte 10 and Kilchoman Sanaig. All are peated whiskies I much prefer to any of the TALL (Talisker, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ledaig) kids.

@@WhiskyJason1 Me. It is the set of Islay peat expressions I find similar enough to dislike as a class. I'm hoping to eventually be able to not have to list them all out.

I really enjoyed the Scarabus NAS when it came out. However over the course of the bottle my palate changed (or the whisky did) and the whisky exhibited kind of a "grainy" mouthfeel....not grain whisky but like bits of sand (not hard like that by any means) or textural variability. I didn't replace the bottle. In Canada I haven't seen the 10 year version until today and it was on for 43 Euros (65 CAD). Regular price was 57 euro. Anyway, my favorite 10 year so far is the Port Charlotte 10. It ticks a lot of boxes but it is also about Euro more on sale. I will have to see if it's worth it because I like me a nice Caol Ila too....if Scarabus is in fact Caol Ila. Great review Jason.

I love the Port Charlotte 10, always a solid dram. Also at 50% it is very well presented. After that the Ledaig 10 is really nice and really well priced, at about 35 EUR.

Port Charlotte 10 is good - but I do not like Ledaig (yet)

@@WhiskyJason1 Maybe try the Ledaig 18, if possible batch 2. For me it was the game changer for appreciating peated whisky.

Difficult to choose a favourite peated, I can't do it. Laphroaig 10 is 43% in the U.S and that little difference would help. It's not even cheap any more. The colouring isn't even subtle, it's flipping obvious and they do it with everything for some reason. I have to say I am a big fan of the Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength which is good value in the U.K. I might pick up the Scarabus as it's pretty affordable.

Lagavulin 9 is the young heavily peated whisky for me with Talisker 10 a close second.

Call me a cheater but my favorite 10 yo peated whisky is Springbank 10. Followed by Ardbeg 10, Ledaig 10 and Talisker Distillers Edition.

@@WhiskyJason1 Not in my neck of the woods, unfortunately. Springbank bottles come to our local market very rarely and at fairly "optimistic" prices. Nevertheless I managed to snag a couple of bottles of Springbank 10 last year but that was it. Later a small supply of Hazelburn 10 was available for a while and was even on special sale but at that particular time I have already blown my whisky budget out so I had to let it pass by me...

Ardbeg 10 for me, since you specifically said 10 year old.Talisker 10 is a bit too perfumy for me. As for young peated whiskies nothing beats the laphroaig quarter cask for me. Paul john peated select cask is another one i really like

I have not had a peated ten year old whisky that I didn't like... If I have to choose a favorite, it was the Port Charlotte Second Limited Edition 10 year old that's no longer available.
